I tend to over-spend, hoard, and struggle to budget and save. I am 32 M as I was not taught or shown any form of financial literacy. I was not encouraged to read, buy things for myself, or just go without to the point of negligence. This year I decided to do a personal course in personal literacy and also accounting too.

Oh boy. I so feel this. I recently went through some financial trauma, resulting me in nearly being evicted from my apartment, and needing family to bail me out. This has resulted me to have major anxiety and depression (and I already have PTSD), and feeling like that I have to solve the problem right away.....picking up two part time jobs in addition to me working a full time position, plus looking for summer work (I'm a teaching assistant), and possibly looking for a new career. I have made alot of progress since this near eviction, like putting two months worth of rent aside for when my housing grant runs out, working with a money mentor to get a better grip on my finances and budget, quit figure skating for the time being, and withdrew from a race (I also run), sold a lot of my Bath and Body Works stuff (that was a biggie for me), etc. The worst feeling though is that I feel like I broke my family's trust, and it may take a long time to rebuild. I know my family knows that I'm taking this seriously, and have been making steps towards it, but man, it still hurts.....and this was a very long time coming.

Listening to this was really emotional. I have immigrant parents and I have so much guilt for throwing things away when my life is better than my parents so it’s shown up in hoarding things I should get rid of. Also because I was worried about my families finances throughout childhood and adulthood I would deprive myself of going out and having experiences. Thank you for making this video. Please make a video on realistic steps to heal from financial trauma and also how can we know if we are not traumatized anymore even if we are budgeting and treating ourselves. I feel like it’s hard to know.

Thank you for this video. Perfect timing considering how much gas prices are going up! I just bought lunch and thought “I won’t have enough money to buy lunch and I shouldn’t with these gas prices!” I have a steady income too but I always worry.

Thank you for your comment and sharing your experience! Unfortunately it’s so common especially in times like these. What benefits is most is to find a balance that works for us. Allowing ourselves basic needs like food without putting too much stress on our finances. I hope this easies is. For all of us!

Hoarding is not always bad actually. Especially when you live in a country under war conditions. I had a situation when after a missile strike all the ATMs were off and you could only use cash at the stores. So you could not buy food if you had no cash.
