@forestdweller55815 жыл бұрын
Crows or even rooks will harass any bird of prey here. I often see them nipping buzzards in mid air or sparrowhawks. It is a strategy not uncommon even in mammal species on the ground. If you are harrassing that predator it is not able to hunt you down because...you've been busted. It eliminates any chance of a sneak attack which predators rely on.

I didn’t know that ravens and crows hung out together. I assumed all the “crows” in my neighborhood were just different sizes due to age. Now I realize a good number are ravens. @The Muckler That's what I thought too... But these have a wing span of about 3 - 3.5 feet and stand about a foot maybe a foot and a half tall. I've looked at their tailfeathers in flight and they are almost straight across, not really curved and definitely not tapered. They are big enough that when my mom saw them in flight, she thought they were buzzards until one landed in the yard across from us. (edit) I realized after I posted, that this was on a different thread. LOL. So, the birds I've got frequenting my yard tend to soar... a lot. They make the typical crow calls most of the time, however, I HAVE heard them croak at me several times. Usually when I'm late with their breakfast! LOL. They have "escorted" a hawk from my yard, but didn't fight it. Well, one tried to but the other three seemed to scold him for it.

Informative and interesting. I've been wondering how to tell them apart my whole life, without really looking into it. I think I assumed they were probably the same bird with minor variations. The largest and most beautiful crow/ravens I've ever seen is in the highlands of northwest Mozambique where I was working as a pilot for UNHCR back in the 90's. The ravens/crows were the largest I'd ever seen and were sometimes marked with white. I imagine they were ravens because of their size. These two-toned ravens were the only one I've ever seen that deviated from the standard all-black color. Quite strikingly beautiful. As I recall, they sounded like the standard "caw caw caw" calls typical of covids.

The crows seemed to be having a merry time of it and the seagulls seemed frustrated that they couldn't out maneuver the more aerodynamic and smarter crows. *My surname is of no relation to the black birds, but I respect them.

AWESOME! We have a flock of 4 that came back for the last 3 years. One (juvenile) walked into the kitchen and made demands to be fed. If the patio doors were closed, it would knock with its beak onto a glass. LOL This year, 2 came back with 2 babies (1 adult died, we buried it) and planted flower on it's grave :-( We never tried to befriend any, just helped them out with good food and they just ....came to hang around. One keeps on bringing "gifts". It's wonderful to watch them. If I "coo", one will "coo" back. I guess I am "speaking crow" now LOL Thank you for a beautiful video. Crows/Ravens/ Birds are awesome.

Thank you for sharing your story, are you being visited by crows or ravens?
@incanada836 жыл бұрын
theravendiaries, Well... kind of hard to tell yet. Sometimes we hear raven's call and most of the times crows , but definitely, all the time/day in/day out.... THE Ever-Hungry Baby. LOL However, we noticed that all of the birds seem to have "baby" feathers but I am sure, 2 of them are adults and the third is a juvenile. We gave "it" a name as the NEEDY ONE because it developed a sore leg which over the last few weeks got better but the name stuck. (To us). The 2 adults keep on feeding beak-to-beak even though the NEEDY ONE is quite capable of feeding him/herself . It's almost like the bird is playing a game of "help me, I can't get up". They remember us from 3 years ago even though the first crow (we named Elvis because of its unique feather head but had no idea if it was male or female because the feathers didn't fit in any category of the said birds . Elvis name just stuck with us and we miss her/him of not coming back wondering if all was well or..not. :-( I'm sorry for taking too much time and rambling on but I can't help it. We are watching closely to see if we, mere humans, can distinguish male from a female :-) Thank you for your response. I will end here or otherwise.... I will produce an "Essay about Crows" LOL P.S. I just HAD to say this, the NEEDY ONE flays on to the deck rail right by the kitchen open doors (we have a dog, hence the open door all day long), and AUDACIOUSLY DEMANDS!!! Yep, Demands some food from us. Well... we happily oblige :-) They don't fear our 4 legged Love but know to avoid our friend's dog when she comes to visit.

I enjoy the stories, and I think others do too, so you're welcome to come back to ramble all you want. I've read a number of books on crows (Marzluff, Savage, Kilham and more) why not personal essays?
@incanada836 жыл бұрын
Hi :-) Thank you for your encouragement, (I don't trust my writing LOL) and the tips on books. I'll definitely look them up to learn more . For the time being, We take lots of close up pictures and pay attention more so, because of your informative video. We have recognized "our" flock are crows. There IS one raven someplace close; we can hear it once in a while but haven't seen it. It's hard to observe any of then in high-flight as we are surrounded by green belt and any flying we see is from the ground to the trees and branches onto our deck rails. They are beautiful up close (3' to 4' away everyday), then they sort of jump-fly onto the ground where they walk or hide/retrieve their food stash. Thanks again. I think you should make more videos. Perhaps about the young? You are very good at it and your explanations. :-)

More and more researchers are doing all kinds of experiments on these birds. Now, they are finding out new things all the time. Course those of us who have worked with the birds for decades have tried to tell them for years but things have to go thorough the "system" to be "accepted." Personally i wouldn't limit a raven to anything. Like us they are individuals and have very distinct personalities. One raven may remember over a hundred "cashing" or hiding spots for food, another may never return to any one of them because your watching it! That's the fun and hence my ongoing interest in these crazy birds!

I've noticed that, too. The exception is the crows around where I live have gotten to know me, they know my face and voice. It's not unusual for them to come over and sit on my rail whilst I bring them something to eat. Yes, I know they come because they know I will treat them however, they are never nervous round me. Neither the ravens. I treat them, too. The difference is, it's either one or both of the two ravens nearest me that come and as many as seven or eight of the crows.

AK has ravens and they are marvelous wonderful birds. A lot of people think they are pests because they are dumpster divers but the truth is they have distinct personalities and in time you can make friends with ravens. Up in the mountains I had a raven that would fly across the canyon and pass directly overhead and I could hear its wings thrashing the air as it flew. Every morning we’d exchange greetings before it moved on. I miss the wilderness of AK.

One thing I've noticed about ravens is that they seem to love the rain. They always seem to come out into the open and just kinda hang out when it rains. Corvids are my favorite birds. Here in California we have steller's jays, crows, ravens, magpies and scrub jays. All fun to watch; especially when the jays compete with the squirrels for food.

I can't make out if it's the adults or the young that catch up to adults in size very rapidly. 2/ They have developed iridescent spackling on their breasts this fall. I have observed mating rituals and social skills of all animals I've had the pleasure of interacting with in nature for very many years now. Mallard ducks, for instance, are for the most part very promiscuous, lewd and lascivious lol; yet, once in a while I have found mated couples ~they don't fly with the gaggle. I bet there are a few mated crows out there, but I have yet to observe that to confirm any proof. It is just that I have seen the "mate for life" happen with a Mallard duck coupling; and they did make beautiful babies! ;) I noticed a certain quiet and polite disposition between these two than their more commonly non-mating for life brothers and sisters. Seems any animals gathering in a group tend to get the partying and hoopla going. Eagles, observing Bald Eagles are known to mate for life but only as "until death do us part." Whereas, Mourning Doves, certainly mate for life (and are not very bright! though lol). I once saw a Mourning Dove stay next to her mate, that didn't get out of the way of a car in time, for a period of five hours. That was the last time I saw her/him (they look alike, males and females), still sitting by it's mate, unable to leave. Now, I have one that always perches early in the morning, alone. Every year is the lone Mourning dove cooing early in the morning. I've seen so many lone Ravens but only a few couples, and they don't stick around long, making me think they are rather reserved and private birds. Then there are the Buzzards ~they meet in large numbers but rather secretively and their partying seems to be held down to a low roar LOL. When they gather up in trees, everything I observe has checked that they are not hovering over some carion; they seem to be on the ground at all times when feasting. But it is up on the branches of a few big trees that I have seen up to 50 of them gathered together in their very social hopping, bobbing and bopping but at such a low roar, mostly very quiet even when playing with each other. They do have a guttural low call or cluck, not unlike Ravens. Ravens seem much more reserved and private but Crows know how to let it all hang out ;D The other big group I observe a lot are water birds, and there are so many unusual observations over the years in this group. But early in the morning, there is nothing I enjoy more than joining in on the chorus of all the birds working together to make a beautiful symphony, as more and more different species join in, that seems to die down around high noon (making me think this is the time they instinctively leave the symphony and go about their duties of the day to survive. Or, just with one song bird, it is so enjoyable for my copy-cat bird calls to be answered over and over. The Cat Bird (or Brown Thrush) is especially fun and challenging as for every sounding call they make and I make the same back; then they make it different (they never repeat the same bird call twice, I think, until they have gone through all the ones they know before they start over lol). Crows are big blabber mouths but sometimes they really like talking back to me; it even gets to where if I caw twice; it answers twice, and so forth. Often, before they leave they will let out a longer series of caws ~bye bye lol!
