also on his point about it being not as cool looking, yeah, that’s the point. It was kinda meant to be something most players threw away after the 3rd gym. Thus, the design reflects this. It looks completely different from Tranquil in terms of colors, and wears a mask almost as to conceal its identity. It has changed in spite of you, and likes to pretend it doesn’t need you anymore, and never even wanted to battle.

@Switchkid64 Id also argue the reason ones like pidgeot and staraptor are much more beloved and used is just due to the gens they were in, and the fact at those times there wasnt huge competition when it came to good flying type mons. I love those two (staraptor is my favorite early flying type), but Unfezant is top 3 design wise, especially male version, I really like its design, the fact its bad is just to be expected from an early mon... same with most bug types (I feel bad for ledian and mothim), I kinda wish we got more bugs that were legitimate threats, so few exist currently compared to other types (in real life there are tons of bugs you'd rather stay 10 miles away from). I like all the early game bird mons tbh, and have usually used one up till gym 3 or even gym 4-5 since I enjoy having as diverse a team as possible.

I had a Mothim in a hardcore Platinum Nuzlocke and I haven't been able not to love this guy since. Everything about it SHOULD have made it a dead weight in a challenge run of one of the hardest Pokémon games - and yet this mad lad was saving me in some deadly moments again and again, refusing to die in the process. It didn't even have a good Hidden Power type, it was Psychic, and weaker that the Psybeam he eventually learned anyway. And yes, this was Platinum - a game where Tinted Lens Mothim was not yet a thing and Acrobatics didn't exist. The guy was one of the most incredible teammates in my Nuzlocke history precisely because nothing about it made sense, so the only conclusion possible is that he just hacked the game from within through the power of friendship. Notable moments include living a Shadow Ball from Fantina's Mismagius on 1HP while burned and surviving the burn damage by stealing her Sitrus Berry with Bug Bite that same turn. He even used Camouflage a handful of times to handle opponents with Rock attacks that would otherwise wreck him, marking him as the one and only Pokémon in history of all Nuzlockes to ever ever use this move ever. Eventually he did meet his end, shockingly late into the game, but his legend lives on. Tip of my hat to you, Arin the Mothim.

I do want to defend Lycanroc-Midnight by saying its design seems to be a deliberate reference to Joe Yabuki from the manga Ashita no Joe. Joe himself drops his arms for a No Guard stance and invites his opponent to throw strong attacks that he then proceeds to Counter. Lycanroc-Midnight does learn Counter unlike the other two forms, which makes this reference more deliberate. Vital Spirit could also be indicative of not getting knocked out so easily. Early translated titles for Ashita no Joe included Rocky Joe, hence the Rock type. Does this all create a competitively viable Pokemon? No, but the design is still pretty paying homage to a classic boxing manga.

Barbaracle has been done dirty though. Its main ability is tough claws, effectively raising its attack from base 105 to 136,5 which is actually quite decent. And it appeared in the Galar-Dex, so it actually was in Sword and Shield. I somewhat expected more pokemon that didn't get any evolutions, like Heatmor or Stunfisk though

I shall always remain one of Unfezant's strongest soldiers, for some ungodly reason I really like its design, and I agree that Pidove is absolutely adorable (look at it, there are *no thoughts* behind its eyes), but I am not deep in denial enough to deny that it's unusable. I mean, it's movepool is 80% special moves, and has far higher physical attack. All they needed to do would have been inverting its two stats, and it wouldn't have been good or even decent, but it would have had at least a niche as the first special attacking regional bird. Spoilers for #1 As a person who loves Barbaracle (its funny) I used it in my Y playthrough. Number 1 absolutely should have been Binacle. you underestimate just how ABYSSMAL Binacle is. I used this pos for 39 LEVELS. and the only stab moves it gets in that time are Water Gun and CLAMP. Have you ever had to use CLAMP, Wolfey? Because its a 35 BASE POWER MOVE, with 85 PERCENT ACCURACY. AND ITS THE BEST MOVE THIS THING GETS. Not to mention the route 1 ass stats it has that you have to carry all the way to LEVEL 40.

I love Sunflora because that thing carried me through a crystal nuzlocke. Pure grass types do really well in Gen2 once you get past the second gym but, unfortunately, that doesn't translate well to other generations. I still love Sunflora. That's said a lot of my favourite Pokemon aren't my favourite because of the design, they are my favourite because I had to use them for things and I bonded with it Other examples would be Tropius, Breloom, and female Pikachu.

Im not mad that tranquil is on the list. Im mad that tranquil is below wachog. Based on this list criteria, how can you put wachog over tranquil? 1. It can still evolve. If that’s good enough for magikarp its good enough for tranquil. And even if it couldn’t: 2. It learns fly, the best and most useful HM even if it’s not required. 3. Its evolution has two forms, wich is objectively interesting even if isn’t objectively good or fun or you’re sad because you didn’t get the one you want. (Like gambling) 4. It’s not generally ugly or even unnerving like watchog is, and pidove is even cute. 5. Ash had one, wich means it’s more memorable to a whole generation than wachog. And definitely without the movies but maybe even including them, it has more airtime than probably every box legendary. That may be true of all regional birds until corv, but its not true of most mons on this list. (In fact was ash’s shiny keeping noctowl off, or just because its a superb owl, and not a pigeon? Thats a little birb racist wolfe) 6. It has an objectively better typing. Gains an immunity, actually has resistances, and a STAB that CAN hit for super effective damage. 7. The super luck ability is probably the best ability on this list without regard of the Pokemon/movepool using it. Slap a scope lens on there and you’re criting ALOT, no focus energy required. BeingOn this list, I will accept. Being lower than wachog is unacceptable.

It's worse because they made its signature move Counter. A move that may be rare for a Rock type (like 3 Rock Pokemon up to this point learned naturally but 6 lines get it through Breeding) but is still pretty common and it's a move that requires huge bulk not the moderate bulk it gets. It also gets Reversal, which is a better trade-off version of that concept but, again subpar bulk doesn't help. If they gave it Sturdy and the Dark secondary type (since most of the other form-exclusive moves are Dark), maybe it could be decent but, as it is now, it's a really bad half concept.

The only ones I truly disagree with here are Obstagoon and Barbaracle. Obstagoon actually keeps some of the design philosophy from Zigzagoon and Linoone, those two being zig-zags and straight lines. Obstagoon, while it isn't as prevalent, has a cross pattern in mind, as present in how it holds its arms, the crosses on its upper arms, and the shape conjured by Obstruct. Barbaracle actually has a decent movepool for a water-rock type, having water STAB in Liquidation, coverage against Grass in X-Scissor and Poison Jab, and variable coverage in Earthquake and Superpower. That at least should put it above *Tranquill*. Edit: Just saw another comment describing Obstagoon's design philosophy according to its designer. Being blocked by an obstacle.

Spidops' ability makes sense because he is intented to be played using the sticky web circle throw sinergy, so he basically has a cool little playstyle that is almost unique to him. Linoone evolving into a pokefied version of a disney hyena was a shocker for sure. Still doesn't top the stark difference from Dragonair to Dragonite according to my wife. Personally, I love yellow Barney.
