I think thats one of the crazy things about linguistist, almost everything they study you either know by using a language or could be know by thinking about the way people around speak and comparing that with others

@Just_a_brigentine_bilge-rat yea linguistics are crazy interesting, but i feel like sometimes too ive met some people who study it so much they become pedantic and start to lost grasp of the real world application uses of words. Like linguistics are cool, but ive found some people who study it dont keep up wirh the evolution of language quiet as well whem it comes to spoken language, and they assume any form of typed comment is written language when most people type how they speak
@improvedalpaca3294
@improvedalpaca3294 4 ай бұрын
@@whenimmanicimgodly4228 that point about internet grammar is really interesting. I find it funny how much comma's have replaced full stops in lots of our writing. I guess on the internet there are no rules to follow and no consequences for how we speak so we revert to typing as if we were speaking or even just a stream of consciousness. I would never write that long sentence in an essay.

Thats partly true but its more that the algorithm treats you like a kid. Tiktoks and shorts and reels and the like are set up so the content creator only has a few seconds to get your attention before you scroll past. my high school literature teacher always said "all texts are a deliberate construct" like, he might not be doing the influencer voice, but we *do* control the tone, pitch, stresses etc of our speech to communicate different things to different people, in different contexts, to direct or deflect attention etc it's not evil! it is a little unsettling to only learn explicitly about after having a lot of exposure to it though

I've noticed a similar thing with some of my finnish speaking university lecturers! It's especially noticable, because in finnish the stress is usually extremely regular: always on the first syllable and kinda light at that, to the point that finns generally think finnish has no stress. But these lecturers often stress the last syllable in a sentence in a very paricular manner for emphasis. It sounded extremely funny at first.

Any conscious emphasis would be part of it. It’s macro in the sense that linguists who study this operate, mostly on phonemes, as parts of syllables, as parts of words, as parts of utterances, in formal communication, as parts of phrases, sentences. Other salesman. Auctions. Performers. Stand up comedians. Attention misdirection would make for interesting case studies.

What I think you left out of this analysis is how leaving answering machine messages is a HUGE influence on this influencer accent. People left messages to each other that sounded like that. It was a way of expressing, "I'm not really sure what to say. I'm nervous that I'm being recorded. Let me cute about my nervousness as a way to deal with it" All of that is encoded in the way we would leave messages on phone machines. When recording TikToks, it's similar.
