Well said. Also, what bothers me, who is an ace, is that sometimes the asexual character of the source material is changed to homosexual in the adaptation "for the audience," even though the ace representation is still small. And of course, there have been only a small handful of these ace erasure cases, like Riverdale and Sherlock for example, and I understand that all of us also need to get more visibility and representation and specifically good visibility and representation with quality.
@zalamazuКүн бұрын
I also wish that ace representation was more explicit. It seems like a lot of rep lately has just been canonically confirmed but online, instead of confirmed or heavily implied in the show, movie, etc. Having a character just not get into a relationship isn’t good or relatable enough to me :/ And don’t even get me started on the characters confirmed ace online only to combat the ships… The only good explicit rep I can think off the top of my head is Todd from Bojack Horseman and for some reason more writers haven’t taken notes… hmm…

Thanks for bringing this up. I’m a queer person who likes to write books (although I have no idea if they’ll ever be published 😅) with tons of lgbtq+ characters, and honestly when I see media under scrutiny for what it gets wrong, especially stuff like Vivienne Medrano which I like, it makes me afraid to share my work for fear I haven’t got the representation “right”. But I just try to tell the stories as I feel them without worrying too much about the characters’ sexualities (In addition I also love Will Byers and I hope Byler will be endgame 🥰

GLAAD and other folks who track queer representation in US media have found that f/f is more common than m/m. Also that f/f is much more likely to involve a bi woman, while m/m is more likely to involve 2 gay guys. I can think of 4 shows with gay male main characters that got cancelled before the first season finish airing -- so not convinced about the cancellation thing either.

6:15 Byler doesn't fit into this category because it will be endgame. Sadly heteronormativity is real, and fans who don't see them endgame are truly blind. Imagine if Will was a girl, nobody would question if they were endgame or not. Stranger Things is a series about outcasts so queerbaiting is not possible but, i understand why people think that, it has happened way too many times in the history of movies and series.
@moonys.corner7 күн бұрын
i personally completely believe they're going to be endgame, I just fear that they'll end up pulling a fast one on us or something. Will is pretty much confirmed gay, I just wish they would give us confirmation IN the show, not through interviews and such, that's why I included them in the queerbaiting section.

i think the she ra's netflix adaptation is a great example of queer representation, since they don't make it an issue or the main series plot, there are manyyy varied characters, like bow's dads, they're two married queer men, but that's just a normal thing on the show, they don't have to talk about it or explain the situation to anyone, because it is normal! and the iconic romance between she ra and catra is soo well developed, and natural. it's just beautiful how they added queer elements on the show.

Well I understand that it can be hard to write an LGBTQ character if you’re not LGBTQ yourself I feel like the focus shouldn’t be on the character sexuality/gender identity but more on their personality and how they go about life as a person and that who they are attracted to is just an aspect of their personality but not something that becomes the focus of the character or something that can be the characters only characterisation I don’t know if this makes sense but yeah.
@rainbowunicorn92598 күн бұрын
for me it honestly depends on the show, there's a lot of shows abt straight ppl focused purely on love but I understand what u mean. it's kinda annoying when every other sentence coming from a queer characters mouth is abt their sexuality but tbh if the show is supposed to be themed abt LGBT+ then I think it's fine in moderation ig I can't rlly explain but yea

While Love, Simon was premiered at a time where queer visibility was already the norm, I think the most important takeaway to learn from it was that coming out is, and always has been, a process. There are many reasons why some might not be out yet, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do so. It’s just that they need more time before they can be open about it and when they do, it has to be on their terms. Love, Simon captures that feeling well. Yes, it’s not perfect, but it’s not totally far off the truth. Coming out takes time, whether the surrounding community would be accepting of LGBTQ stuff or not.
@misfits92947 күн бұрын
I personally think Heartstopper and Love, Simon fall flat from a similar problem of feeling deeply...straight. Like, perfectly packaged for straight audiences. There's a difference between positive representation and representation stripped of so much that makes it queer (or even conflicting) to the point it's now not even representation save for surface level. The message of "see, LGBT+ people are normal, just like you and me!" is perfectly true in a sense but it can often be taken to "they're now just following straight relationship conventions but they're two guys or girls, or removing any of the edge or individuality that queer people can have to be more appealing to straight audiences". Why does Love, Simon need a white, cis, male lead who is well-off and painfully average in every way except for the fact he's gay? Is that the only way straight audiences can accept queerness? We need more queer POC in general.
@ArtandStuff137 күн бұрын

as a queer adult The Dragon Prince on netflix probably has some of my favourite queer representation next to dead end: paranormal park. Part of it is having so many queer characters. TDP has two lesbian couples who are both married; one couple is an enemies to lovers plotline and then focuses on their engagement/wedding and political conflicts, and there's two gay couples as well, one of whom is more of a background slowburn and the other the opposite of bury your gays. There's multiple trans characters, one of whom is a main character from S4 onwards and his coming out scene is really lovely, and multiple nonbinary characters too. The show lets so many various facets of identity (like race and/or disability) with queerness as well, and while it's never the focus of the characters' stories, their queerness is still relevant to the show's themes of chosen identity / self actualization and trying to exist and have social change in a world that maybe isn't ready for you yet. I love it so much

Good Video! I really like it! But I would say, that there's another problem. I don't know if anyone agrees with me, but I still feel like, that a queer relationship is treated differently than heterosexual ones. I really can't put my finger on it, but I feel like, that sometimes being gay or anything else means, that your relationship is pretty good. Like there a shows where the heterosexual characters are going out with everyone else who is heterosexual and the not heterosexual characters just have one relationship. It's definitely better, than something that makes fun of being gay, but it still is weird

I agree with the issues you mentioned. Whenever people mention Willow or Korra (and Asami), I always call them bi cuz they've had relationships with men and women. But on the other hand, if Willow, Korra, and Asami only date women from then on, is it unfair to say that they're lesbians? Willow had Xander and Oz, but perhaps Mako was a phase before Korra and Asami realized that they only want to date women. But I suppose if they genuinely were attracted to Mako, they're still bi.
@otsoko662 күн бұрын
I give Willow the same respect I do people in real life -- she says she's gay after meeting Tara. OK, if she says so, she's lesbian.
@l.n.33722 күн бұрын
@otsoko66 I would use that perspective, too. If the person/characters calls themselves lesbian instead of bi, then that's what I would say. The problem is that in LoK, the terms gay, lesbian, and bi don't exist on screen, obviously. So it's just fan interpretation of "are Korra and Asami lesbian now or are they technically bi?" And that's where you have people arguing over bi erasure vs lesbians.
@tibbedam71594 күн бұрын
I agree with some of the arguments. Because especially queerbaiting is something that is done often and is just super annoying. Also most of the queer movies are just a lot of the same. So making it more into the media in a positive sense would be a great idea.

How did you make your video and where did you get your clips from? (I probably going to make a video on Power director) Also,i think the reason I was never against gay people was because I saw small amounts of media that potrayed them alright. Like Popularity Papers book 3,(the first book I read in the series)where one of the main characters had two dads,and I thought they were cool. Or the Loud House,with Mr and Mr McBride,Or OK KO,with Enid and Red action. Basically, I saw small amounts of media that probably counteracted the negative portrayals,which, according to my memory, weren't much. Though, as a character creator, I still look up how to avoid stereotypes, regardless. Love the video😊
