I'm curious as to the history behind these techniques, specifically how far they date back. It would be cool to see more stuff like this showcased in games that try to emulate something more realistic like Ghost of Tsushima! Of course there's only so many moves you can program into a game, but it'd be cool to see beautiful quickdraws like these if they fit the time period!
@MadassAlex3 жыл бұрын
Iaijutsu seems to have emerged with the katana, which by memory is the early 1400s. This is because the relatively short blade length of katana facilitates a quicker draw, and diverse techniques can emerge from that. These techniques were originally intended for elite fighters in military engagements; one could drop their projectile weapon or polearm and immediately transition to swordplay when the situation demanded. As for realism in games, I'd suggest that aesthetic realism and systemic realism are two different things. Nioh is better at the latter. Way of the Samurai is also worth checking out, but has a very unique game format.

Generally I as a HEMA practitioner would say, a longsword oder rapier for example are much more effective in a duel, because of the reach and such things. But when it would come to a situation where you have to react so quickly against an unseen enemy, this is where the katana really shines with techniques like these, better then nearly any other sword. Like Matt Easton always says, it´s all about context. And in context of being attacked flatfooted, such techniques could save your live, while you would never be quick enough drawing a rapier.
@neighborhoodsunbear98383 жыл бұрын
Yeah swords and just weapons in general, work/perform better in the specific tasks/contexts that they're used in. Most long swords are good for keeping your opponent at a distance, katanas are good for defending against quick unexpected attacks, espada y dagas are good at performing in confined spaces, and urumis are perfect for self defense.

Never thought about it that much,, but of course since it is a one bladed weapon, using a support hand becomes far easier than European half swording. And you can put your weight into it. N3 Pleb here, gonna try to roughly translate each of these technique names. I’d appreciate corrections to be given if needed: 釣瓶抜 Tsurubenuki: Well Bucket Draw 釣瓶落 Tsurubeotoshi: Well Bucket Drop 尖返 Kissakigaeshi: Swordpoint Returning (First kanji literally means something like sharp or diagonal, but apparently you can read it as Kissaki which sounds similar to 切っ先 which means point [of a blade etc.], probably deliberate wordplay. Also good to note that 返 can mean a reply, or a reversal since it shows up in the other names and probably means something like “counterstrike” in the context of kenjutsu.) 風神貫 Fuujinnuki: Wind-God Pierce 提灯破 Chouchinyaburi: Lantern Rend 逆刀 Gyakutō: Reverse Sword 房落 Fusaotoshi: Tassel Drop 斜面太刀 Syamendachi: Sloped Tachi(japanese long sword) 氷柱外 Tsurarahazushi: Icicle Remover 神無太刀 Kannadachi: Kanna Tachi (Kanna[神無] comes from Kannazuki[神無月] or the name for the tenth month in the traditional Japanese lunar calendar; the name can be translated literally as "the month when there are no gods" as it was said that the eight million gods of Japan left their shrines and congregated annually at Izumo Shrine, only there would it be Kamiarizuki(神在月) "the month when the gods are present" while it would be Kannazuki everywhere else.) So I guess you could translate Kannadachi into something like “Godless Longsword” 逆袈裟返 Gyakugesagaeshi: Reversed Kasaya Return (Kasaya, or Gesa in japanese, are the robes of fully ordained Buddhist monks and nuns) 鳥居返 Toriigaeshi: Shrine Gate Reversal 虹ノ太刀架 Nijinotachikake: Rainbow Longsword Suspension (架 or 架け literally means to suspend something between two points or to build something like a bridge to connect two points, the name is probably going for something like “Forming the Arch of a Rainbow with your Sword”) 虎乱刀 Korantō: Sword of the Tiger’s Unrest 歪抜 Hizuminuki: Crooked Draw or Distorted Draw 盾刃 Tateba: Shieldblade 身影返 Mikagegaeshi: Shadow Reversal (Kanji literally mean Body Shadow Reply, fits a technique that is for someone behind you) 卍抜 Manjinuki: Swastika Draw 蟷螂返 Tourougaeshi: Mantis Reversal 不動絡太刀 Fudoukaramedachi: Unmoving Entangled Longsword
