Bravo Joan! Perpetual applause for always SHOWING up for those less fortunate! And to never let us forget how much our lives are indebted to those who sacrifice so much for the benefit of us all. Joan you are a Jewel of Justice! The highest test of civilization of any race is in its willingness to extend a helping hand to the less fortunate. - Booker T. Washington There But For Fortune Show me the prison Show me the jail Show me the prisoner whose life has gone stale And I'll show you, young girl, With so many reasons why, There but for fortune go you or I. Show me the alley Show me the train Show me the hobo who sleeps out in the rain And I'll show you, young man, With so many reasons why There but for fortune go you or I. Show me the whiskey stains on the floor Show me the drunkard as he stumbles out the door And I'll show you, young girl, With so many reasons why, There but for fortune go you or I. Show me the country where the bombs had to fall Show me the ruins of the buildings, once so tall And I'll show you young man, With so many reasons why, There but for fortune go you and I, You and I. You say your voice was a gift. It was, and it was For You to Give and you have. It's as lovely now (2024) as always. Love is a place we go, a sunrise, trees, an infant, a full moon, a song when it's poured through a heart. You bring others to love, to that place, the reason so many adore you. Your gift is healing.. I'm glad you can connect it to the love of people, as we still have to turn around results of colonialism, seen throughout the world. It will take love and work. Opa

Phil Ochs wrote it. He and Joan Baez performed it together at Central Park in 1975 after the end of U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam. His vocal chords were bent by being strangled by three black guys on a beach in Africa. He said he believed they were CIA. I think they might have resented him flirting aggressively with their pretty women. He died in 1976. He performs it well too. He was friends with Bob Dylan before Dylan was famous.

In this moment my JoanBaez I am in a house for women in Paris , we were all homeless in the streets of Paris , most of the younger and elder women come from Africa, they have pasts they rarely speak of , but we are All knowing that only open mindedness, tolerance, solidarity and Love and Chance is what we need in this World to survive and overcome What we have to overcome in our memories, biographies To build this new Land All together, And here we some of all of the women are save. Even if ever I quit Paris my heart is open and given to theses formidable and courageous women, and their way to teach and be shown that All of us that Loves the Answer here and in You who are my theme and way inmitten us. Bless them and let those with less Chance until now be saved . And young Girls and boys be heartfelt shown that even I if there are big problems in our lives, to carry on and not to hate gives us the Chance to Love. I love You JoanCBaez, however my way continues You reign in my Heart and Soul My Body and Mind And you teach us real Love Deine Katharine ~C~Y Baez Katharina Scharlowski

Love hearing you sing this song. I remember hearing this song on Los Angeles pop radio stations back in the 60's. I was barely in my teens and this was the very first song I ever heard you sing, which made me your fan forever. My parents took me up to Carmel for a few days every year and I knew that you lived up around the Carmel Valley area. I think I had heard that when we were up there. Years later in the early 1980's when I was visiting Carmel and Monterey, met this man who used to run the Monterey Theater (I think that's what it was called), he talked about meeting you & Mimi at the theater but mostly see Mimi and talk to Mimi at that time. His name was Ken Ormsbey. Long since passed away. I think he ran a used book store for a time up there too. Wonder if his name rings a bell to you? Carmel, Carmel Valley, Big Sur - so beautiful. Always wondered why you moved from there to a further northern, CA area? If I lived in Carmel Valley, Big Sur area, I would never leave. ☺☺ Some lovely secluded houses and privacy up there if you can afford them. Me, I would love to be able to afford even some tiny studio apt. up there. Still in So. CA, in the Inland Empire - but......if I ever win big on the Lotto, Carmel or Carmel Valley I would go. 😊 Your long time fan, Linda k

Hi Joan, 1. You are my role model in terms of attempting to live ethically, the music I aspire to create, and the synthesis of the two 2. Can you please do a Tiny Desk? 3. I study composition and realized recently that your voice runs through every piece I compose! At first, I was embarrassed to notice so much unauthenticity in my own work, but I've warmed up to the idea that the artists that live the life they sing about have that effect on people and I am honored to be one of many carrying on the work that you and Mimi live and lived for. All of this to say, thank you for everything, and may your songs always be sung!
