Now .. THIS.. is how it's DONE!! I've had the pleasure of singing Dawson's arrangement as 1st tenor in 3 Choirs... having the 3rd verse solo "making it my own" instead of playing it safe by sticking to the way it was written. Thank You Dr. Allison for allowing me the pleasure.

as a dedicated back row bass who had the the experience to to sing this and many other compositions under Mr. Dawson, this performance brought back great memories of my time at Tuskegee Institute . Andrew Daigeau

I find this hymn especially beautiful. It is filled with gentleness and hope. It reminds us that God wants us to be healed, to be whole.

There was so much beautifully moving music written by the composer William Dawson, born 1899 in Anniston, AL - a black man who wrote these amazing spirituals to pay tribute to the plight of the slaves. I was so lucky in my many concerts to have sung most of them, this one in particular. We need a Balm in Gilead right now. What is ironic is that these songs worshipped God. Many of them were actually written in Ebonics - I have the sheet music somewhere. Where are we now and what have we become?? Certainly not the hopes of this composer as he put his feelings and thoughts to this wonderful music.....

+Patricia Taylor You echo my thought Patricia. It is indeed sad to see our beautiful country torn apart by such division and hate on so many issues. May this song be the healing Balm that we need. If you have the sheet music for this piece, would you be kind enough to send it to me? We are singing it for a concert on Dec.8th. Thanks and Blessings coming your way. Francis. My email in case you have the music, is francis.pereira62@gmail.com

This is the arrangement I remember from my childhood, and of all the music sung in that church, Balm in Gilead was the song that moved me most and that I loved best. Thank you, a beautiful performance. ❤

As an alto, it makes me so happy that the altos were audible in this. So often, the altos get hidden, but often they have some of the most interesting parts. Thanks for letting my fellow altos shine!

The altos do often get the most interesting (best?) parts. As a choral conductor, I always try to get the altos to sing out a little more - which usually means having to ask the sopranos to back off a bit. The diction in this recording is excellent! I love to hear it sung as "sinnnn - sickkkk soul."

An absolutely gorgeous rendition of this song! The soloists were terrific, as was the choir as a whole. I especially liked the slow tempo in the first part. I belong to a choral group, and we did this, but a bit faster in tempo. I liked your version better, and I listen when I feel the need for peace. HI! This is a really popular American Arrangement by William Dawson--one of the best arrangers of African-American Spirituals from the Mid-Twentieth Century. I would imagine you can get them from any music retailer, anywhere around the world.

This is a hard arrangement to keep in tune. So many choirs end up a full step lower than they start out. Ironically, it helps a lot when the soloist is slightly sharp.

ShangoJamal...raise the key a half-step..This helps tremendously!
