Hello Matt, I really is... Sadly I only got extremely interested in Mike Burrows work in recent years and wished I had visited his workshop. A real lesson to not put things off. Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

Hi Paul, Very nice the cam for register the chain tension! It's the first time that i saw on a bike! In Italy there was an old bike in the middle of 70s-80s called "Graziella", very similar with the possibility to fold it in half for transport in the camper / roulotte...many memories come back! Thanks Paul, see you soon, Alberto

Hello Alberto, The cam chain tensioning trick was often used on Tandem bike to tension the chain that runs between front and rear chainsets... Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

@@TheKnacklersWorkshop Just going to say exactly the same thing Paul! In my youth my brother and I rode a pre-war three speed Sunbeam tandem with this arrangement. The "gas-pipe" between the bottom brackets was 3" outside diameter and it had 26" x 1.75" tyres! The whole thing weighed a ton. We didn't seem to worry about it much and did thousands of miles on it in the late 1950's.

I used the same system on both my Harley and Triumph custom motorbikes, never dreaming it was used on a push bike lol

Hello Paul. Great video. The rear end is like a version of my Ducati Multistrada. Cam design chain tensioner & single sided arm. I could do with some weight off my bike. I think it's around 230Kg without me on it. Look forward to the next episode. Regards. Steve.

Hello Steve, The old power to weight ratio is also applicable to push bikes so that is why it has been on a diet... I would imagine it might be quite hard and or expensive to lighten a motorbike. Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

Hi Paul, this video popped up in my feed today. Before my summer break I watched the series of workshop move videos you did, looks like you've got it well underway and operative now, well done!! I often see your name in the channels I follow, obviously in Emma's live chats. I think I mentioned there that I used to live in Portsmouth, although that's over 20 years ago now. Still have family there so we often visit. What I like about your workshop is the space and light that you have, maybe stuffy in this hot summer perhaps? I've been trying to think where it might be, perhaps on the Hilsea industrial estate?. I was apprenticed nearby at the old Marconi site at Broad Oak Works. It's changed a great deal since then, I still remember the Bailey Bridge to cross the railway, I wonder what happened to that? Anyway to thats all for now I see you have to keep that bike on a very strict diet!! Good luck from Spain!! PS I have the very same mug!! Only use it for tea though, PG Tips of course!!

Hello David, The workshop is working well now and I have three more machines to get going but they are quite a slow burn so to speak. Yes, it is in Hilsea, it is not perfect as it is normally to hot or to cold, but I just work round it. I was pleased with the slimmed down bike, I have a few ideas for some more weight reduction over the winter... and would like the handlebar a bit lower.... Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

G'day Paul. Interesting bike concept, half forks. I wonder why you chose front brakes over keeping the rear brake, it's going to be an interesting stopping experience in the wet and loose gravel with no rear brake. If I recall my push bike days correctly it looks like you have removed the coasting function of the rear hub so the pedals will turn at all times, this reminds me of kids bikes with fixed hubs, those pedals always attacked their little legs, well be careful riding that thing. Cheers Peter
@TheKnacklersWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, I have ridden fixed wheel for around 50 years... The act of pedaling backward is effectively your back brake, so match with the front brake you pretty much have what you find on a standard bike. They are not for everyone but I have always enjoyed riding a fixed wheel. Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

Hello Paul. Just a question: What happens on the "fixies" if you brake by "backpedalling". Does the sprocket and adaptor unscrew? Or is there some sort of locking mechanism to prevent that? It's an interesting looking bike. Mart.
@TheKnacklersWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Hello Mart, If you fit the fixed sprocket on correctly they wont unwind. On a fixed wheel hub and the adaptor I used there is a left-hand thread that allows you fit a locking ring. Thank for watching. Take care. Paul,,

Hi Paul. Interesting the way your reducing it's weight bit by bit. Is the main frame tube alloy and is the front fork leg steel or alloy, solid or hollow. Never seen one of those bikes before.👍 Tony

Hello Tony, I just wanted to ride it a little before I start sawing lumps of metal off... the frame is aluminum tube... I believe the front fork (singular - lol) is also but I will check tomorrow. I need a new hip so cannot get on my proper road or track bike at the moment, so playing with this one. Thanks for watching. Take care. Paul,,

Hi Paul. Your comments about reducing weight reminded me of a friend years ago who even removed the handlebar grips, then carefully weighed different kinds of tape to replace them with the lightest type he could find. My Dad used to say "Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing" . This was the same wise man who said "Every silver lining has a cloud around it" ... I'm earnestly trying to see how many attachments my Unimat can support before it collapses under its own weight 🙂

Hello Rich, As a nipper we would dream up and try all sorts of things... Some even put helium in their tires as they believed it was lighter than air... I feel that we live in a world where near enough is good enough. I will try to lighted the bike as much as possible SL work sounds good. Take care. Paul,,

Make sure the eccentric cam is moved in a clockwise rotation otherwise the chain will keep coming slack The chainline on mine is correct usually the chain line is used for derailler middle sproket gear and middle chainring on a single speed bike it is not nuch of a problem (mine is nowhere out of alignment as yours - the rear part if the frame on yours might have not been welded in the correct position

This bike is now some 20 years old it a rarity to get one they were well made with top quality componentscand unique I paid £35 for mine still with the original Chien Shien tyres with the reflective band all I did was give the bike a bit of lube on the cantilever brakes ajust the head set and chain with spray grease I have the original mudguards and chain ring also the rear rack with the bungee cord guard the bike was in I someones shed not used for nearly 20 years so it looked like old new stock. I doubt whether those original tyres will last long they rubber is peeling of the side walls so that is the only thing i will need
