I appreciate watching your videos.i have the same bike.Just a little tip for you in case you are not aware.....round off the hole where your wire comes up through case and connects to the poiints armature.that hole probably like mine has sharp edges.i lost fire going down the road twice within a mile or two.i finally found the wire was chaffed where it comes up through.copper was showing and was all burned to crap. Hope that is good advise for you.

Not had that problem yet, but it's probably only a matter of time so I'll have a look 🙂

Ive been watching your videos for awhile now and i finally got a 79 xlch in good shape after waiting patiently for a few years. Your bike is awesome and has style man! Mine is a little more chopper looking and the kicker is rough sometimes when it wants to be a bitch haha but shes fun as hell in my opinion! Anyway, if you dont mind answering a question unrelated to this video, what rear shocks did ya go with that fit? I currently have the original 13" and as you know... These years (79-81) use 3/8 bolts instead of the normal 1/2 harley used on every other year. Id prefer a slightly shorter shock cuz im not a tall person but clearance is tight in regards to the chain. Ive tried some other shocks off newer bikes and they will rub... Id also prefer to not drill out the holes for 1/2 bolts if i can help it. If ya see this comment and get back to me itd be super appreciated! If not no worries im sure ya busy and cant possibly read every comment. Cheers 💪

I never seen that. I do know when you go to change points they're never the same from the center of the point it seems like to where it rubs on that little cam so you got a retirement even if it's the same brand of points I know two of my bikes have points.. But it's amazing it ran I mean it's it's just going to make or break.

I've had it happen.

Sometimes you have to tweak the armature arm with needle nose pliers. So the points touch evenly.especially after you file clean them.they can be tweaked and not contact properly without slight adjustment of arm.

@@junebug5882 Thank you for the info I didn't notice know that. I just noticed when I changed points that I had a heck of a time getting it start until I retimed it which led me to believe that the arm or arms of different manufacturers were possibly of different Length
@junebug58827 күн бұрын
@MoeLarrycurly1 the arms can be different. I've got different sets of points and yes they were different lenght from old ones.you need to always compare to old ones and sometimes alter them a little.make sure contacts both hit flush.

I get that points are cheap and can be swapped on the spot with ease but personally Ive always put a Dyna S ignition in every Harley I've built up. It's simple and reliable as long as you always remember to not wire the blue and white backwards to the coil. I've really never heard of common failures but I've definitely seen a few dead because of the wiring mix up lol

I had a ‘78 Guzzi that ran with no actual points on the….er….points. Didn’t ’arf make a difference when I put new ones in🤔
