We have more building related issues in the last two decades than we have had in the previous century. What has changed? Materials and energy flow. We are no longer building out of thousand-year-old trees and rocks. We are building out of moisture sensitive materials. We have significantly reduced the energy flow across the building enclosure. This has reduced drying potentials. It is ok to get wet if you can dry. Drying is an energy exchange. Less energy flow, lower drying potentials. To stay in moisture or hydric balance if you reduce drying potentials, you must reduce wetting potentials. This course deals with approaches to reduce wetting potentials while still being ultra-energy efficient.
Bonus - A lucky attendee will win a signed copy of Dr Joe's updated version of A Builders Guide to Cold Climates.

Lessons Learned:
1. Identify the primary damage functions: water, heat, and ultra-violet radiation.
2. Provide recommendations on how to control the primary damage functions in residential construction ensuring that the buildings are safe, healthy, durable and energy efficient.
3. Provide recommendations on dealing with wildfire and sustainability.
4. Discuss the appropriate levels of airtightness and relative humidity to assure health and safety.

@@GreenHomeInstitute I learned about the Intumescent grilles that seal up in a fire to prevent smoke and flames from getting into a building. I think this is a great thing to have in all buildings now that we are seeing more interface fires with the increased wildfire activity throughout the world.

Perfect and updated info from our darling Canadian Joe Lstiburek. I forwarded this presentation to two young ladies who live off grid in Nova Scotia and are DIY"er's. I hope they will apply your concepts Joe, of the perfect wall and add insulation on the outside when they get to the exterior walls of their cabin.....just totally appreciate your help Joe! 💝🇨🇦

I always enjoy listening to Joe! I would have liked to hear him discuss the Grenfell Tower fire. I live near Chicago in a 17 year old Pulte built home. I have 2x4 panelised walls with Dow sheathing (OSB at the corners and 1x3 let in bracing). Paper thin vinyl siding. No overhangs at the gables. The house is as comfortable as the 2x6 custom built home we owned before. We've had two homes burn down in our subdivision, and boy do they burn hot. When the fire reaches the truss roof, the home is gone. I laughed at Joe's joke about Dow (and other) foam sheathing as being "compressed napalm". Does anyone make foam sheathing that is fire resistant?

You may consider an enery audit of you home to seek further improvements. Let us know. We have heard of some foams being more resistant than others to fire.

Sprayjones has a video where he holds a propane torch on his closed cell foam for like five minutes, and it will not catch fire.

I know, but I'm simply dispelling the myth that all foam is flammable. I thought that too, until I saw his video. Just search 'sprayjones' here on YT. He is very knowledgeable; he goes super deep into technicals but also demonstrates the practicals, and has me rethinking foam as a whole.

Fantastic talk! Joe mentioned that he’d recommend to use rigid foam to separate (air and vapor) a crawl space from the living space in the hot humid climate. Any pointer where I could find more information on this?

It a debt based economy there has to be public debts. Example: private debts caused the great depression. Public debt crrated new credit during the war, which became wages, which paid off private debts. Some engineers chemists and physicists have decoded the system. The problem is the schools teach as if debt instruments dont exist. If we ignore it, it isnt there. About 26 min in, a reference against government debts.

Thank you for your comment Andrey - The windows are verified via energy star to qualify in the energy star program. Going above and beyond that they can get ratings in the Home Innovations Lab or certified in one of the passive house organizations. If an American windows can meet the standard, it will get listed.
