Here's the pros, cons and differences of these 5G fixed wireless cellular home internet offerings from Verizon and T-Mobile. I compare Verizon's 4G LTE, Verizon's 5G C-Band and UWB and the T-Mobile 5G home internet gateways and service. I cover the T-Mobile Nokia "trashcan" and the Arcadyan KVD21 "darth vader". I compare the services of each of these devices and give some first hand experience of their performance for things like speed, ping, consistency, VPN, VoIP, gateway settings, port forwarding, unlimited data, gaming, streaming and geolock. All of these are "fixed wireless" home internet solutions and are intended to remain at your service address (home) but I test whether these can be moved and still work and how you can sign up for the service when your home address "isn't available".

I’m in a great area for both services -5G UC for TMo and 5G UW for Verizon. I have tested three gateways - Nokia, Arcadyan for TMO and the small white cube for Verizon. Verizon wins hands down on consistency and bluffer-bloat management meaning I have no issues with competitive gaming even while someone else streams Netflix for example. Verizon gives me me a solid 300 down / 20 up no matter the time of day. TMobile had better overall speeds -I got anywhere from 300-6/700 down and 40 up and it was a solid connection BUT anytime I tried to game while my wife was watching Netflix , the lag on the gaming was terrible. I’ve done numerous and repeated bluffer-bloat tests on waveform for both services and Verizon was always a solid “A” for me while TMO was generally a “D” or “F”. If T-Mobile can resolve the bluffer-bloat issue, they’d have a winner. I decided to keep Verizon.

4G LTE is faster anyways when it comes to Download Speeds. 5G is better on Upload Speed but you can easily pull 900+ Mbps Down and in the hundreds on the Up with the T-Mobile Gateway when connected to 2 Proxicast Cellular Antennas...4G LTE is more stable too.

I’m happy your getting good speeds but as trucker who has now tried owned Verizon, T-mobile & Straight talk and takes these devices on the road to city and remote locations. Verizon is shit 💩. Your having good speeds do to your convent location to the towers. Their off brand Straight talk out performed all test I did against the Verizon Business 5G WiFi which got speeds up to 200mbps for less than a minute then floats around 10mbps whereas the straight talk will float at higher speeds but is capped at 100mbps and is cheaper lol. I just bought t-mobiles device on business account to test them out but allot of truckers vouch for it already

Interesting fact based on my experience. I had the Arcadayn gateway (regular T-Mobile home internet plan) and now I have the Nokia Gateway and signed up for the small business internet plan and my performance has been a lot better and more consistent. I had the Arcadayn unit replaced three different times, and so far I'm super happy with the Nokia gateway.

I've been on TMHI (Nokia) for 5 months in the south Seattle area. It's been terrific with download speeds generally in excess of 130mpbs and uploads from 4 to 18 and latency in the mid 30's. I only can get 2 bars no matter which direction I face it. It's been fabulous saving $100/month compared to Comcast. We did have to subscribe to YTube TV to get local TV stations as we live right under the approach to a major international airport and we couldn't get satisfactory over the air TV signals.

I'm down toward JBLM and my speeds for TM are no better than 40 mbps download, average 130 pings, so I'll be getting back my xfinity internet today which I gave up last Sunday, close to 400 mbps and about 12 pings, thought it would be good to have one bill but not working out but love TM other than that!! :)

I had the old T-mobile “trash can” gateway for a year and was happy with it until the end of March 2022 when two storms hit a week apart. The local tower stopped broadcasting 5G and the signal strength of the LTE dropped by half. T-mobileswears there is nothing wrong with the tower, but after 2 1/2 months of only having internet by hotspot off my phone I had to turn in the gateway and cancel my service. Until that point it was great having wireless internet. After Hurricane Ida last year we had internet as soon as we started a generator. That cable lines were torn up for weeks. Verizon home internet is not available in my area.

Great video! I’ve had the T-Mobile 5G for a little over a week now. So far it’s been reliable. Verizon 5G home internet is not available in my area at the moment, so it’s not an option. I also currently still have my Spectrum internet because I want to make sure my T-Mobile 5G is reliable before I go to the trouble of canceling it. I can also get AT&T fiber too. But for the moment, I’m going for the cheapest, which is T-Mobile at $50 month. It is $25 a month cheaper than Spectrum, I’ve been promised a $50 prepaid Mastercard if I keep it 2 months and I get Paramount+ free for one year and $10 a month off my Philo streaming service for one year. I’ve experienced Wi-Fi speeds with the 5G T-Mobile in the 100-500 mbps range, but it’s more consistent at around mid 200. Honestly, I don’t check it anymore. As long as I’m streaming HD with no problems and not having issues with my other connected devices I’m happy. Not had to reboot or unplug the gateway I was sent like others have stated yet. Time will tell. If Verizon opens up in my area I will give it a try. But I believe the cell tower no more than a quarter of a mile near me does have 5G on it because all but the last bar is constant with my gateway. Honestly, Verizon has always sucked in my area and I live in the city. AT&T is currently my cell service because their speeds have always been very reliable and very fast. Verizon will really have to step up their game for me to try them, because it’s all about data speeds for me, in cell phone and certainly now with 5G internet starting up around my area.

I was shipped a Nokia Gateway when I first signed up. I constantly had multiple error messages, always had to reset, non-stop unproductive time-sucking calls to customer service for outages…..they replaced with another Nokia-all the same problems. They sent me yet another Nokia--AGAIN all the same problems. I called and ‘demanded’ an Arcadyan gateway or I was going to cancel. They sent me the Arcadyan and I haven’t had a single problem since. I think it really depends on your area/tower/bands which one works better. If you’re having a lot of problems with the Nokia and want to cancel, I would give the Arcadyan a try first

Regarding bridge mode (10:10) and the VZW cube, yes there is a factory setting to configure it in bridge mode rather than manually configuring DMZ, DHCP, etc. Its buried, but here are the steps: Login to the VZW gateway > Advanced > Network Settings > Network (under Network Name) > Settings and then check the box for IP Passthrough. Done! This will disable DHCP and WIFI among other aspects so best to be wired rather than wireless when performing this. Additionally, LAN port 2 is the only port to be wired to your router when IP Passthrough is enabled. Awesome videos, Nate! Really enjoy them. I also run both TMO and VZW 5G home devices at my house for internet service. Agree on all points about TMO unit being very limited on customization/settings and connection stability. VZW wins hands down.

I have both the T-mobile trashcan and the Verizon C-band cube (non-plus plan). Ignoring that I had to add external antennas to the T-mobile gateway to get good speeds (n41), I prefer the Verizon cube for several reasons. 1. Although the T-mobile gateway can get over 400Mbps at off times, at peak times it may fall below 200. The Verizon gateway is actively limited to 300Mbps and it is that speed every time (it peaks close to 400, but then you see the speed limit in work as it drops to 300). I'd much rather have the consistent speed of the Verizon gateway of 300 down, 20 up every time. 2. The T-mobile trashcan will jump from a decent 4G primary signal on B66 (at -99dBm) to band B2 at -109dBm. When it does that, I don't get n41. I have to restart the trashcan once or several times to get back to n41 (b66/n41) 3. Minor point, but the Verizon cube looks better than the trashcan T-mobile takes the win for me on ping.... often 15-19mS. Verizon ping is not bad and usually in the low to high 20mS. I get an "A" grade on the buffer bloat test on Verizon. We are fairly rural (propane tanks and septic tanks, but

From what I understand, if I want to open my front door lock (U-Tec) from outside my home, at work, say, I cannot do this with the T-Mobile unit (without jumping thru innumerous hoops). I'm not familiar with U-Tec but many home automation services are actually cloud based for processing so in those cases the T-mobile does work. For example I use Smartthings for my home automation and and I can control all my devices outside of my home network. Same for Ring and blink cameras and meross garage door opener. However if there is a need to directly connect to a device (ie you had to setup port forwarding to a specific local IP address) then thats where you run into issues with T-mobile.

I'm going to use your video to kill the native WiFi and see how it does on my own. Overall I'm still happy experimenting on this than sticking with Comcast. I'm two weeks away from testing Verizon at this address as well. I appreciate your focus on latency as well, it's my biggest issue with t-mobile at the moment. In regards to the Verizon 4G/LTE/5G. As someone out in the country with little to no options this has been working great. Much better than a previous wireless provider that Verizon bought out. It is now used as a backup for Starlink which was ordered long before this was available. If there is anything bad to say about it is the customer service trying to actually order the service. I had taken my system to immediate neighbors homes looking for a solution for them to test and order. Upon them calling to order everyone one of them were told it was not available until one spent countless time arguing and on the phone with them to discover if they all used my address they could order and have shipped to their addresses. Once we discovered this it was no issue for the others to order using my address. Only issue was one neighbors system was deactivated and after countless time on the phone was finally reactivated. The automated phone system is horrible as is the online chat features. But hey it works great!

It makes a huge difference which state you are in and where one is related to the towers. I’m in AZ. When T-Mobile took over Sprint (I was with Sprint 19 years) the company went down the ….. they shut off the magic boxes with no replacements. One had to have WIFi to use the new magic boxes. That’s inane. Why would I need a magic box if I had WIFi where I am? And, nasty customer service. Both on the phone and in the stores. I’ll be moving to Verizon. I had very poor customer service with Verizon in CT. But I’ve talked to many Verizon representatives here in AZ on phone and through messenger on FB and much more responsive and polite.

I recall watching one of your videos mentioning to connect all devices to the router to give the gateway a break and avoid competition for signal; is that correct? Currently I have the Tmo Arcadyn gateway and using an orbi mesh router for the house; also having devices closest to the gateway connected to the gateway and other devices that don't see the gateway signal connected to the orbi. The reason I bring up the conflict you mentioned in one of your videos, I noticed when I am gaming at my PC (right next to the gateway and the router disbursing the signal) and someone else in the other part of the house (connected to the orbi *because the device can't see the gateway) watching youtube on a tv, it seems that all the bandwith is directed to the device using orbi rather than my pc which is right next to the gateway. Apologies for the longwinded comment. Cheers.

@B 0 B the more wifi signals you have in one location the higher the chance for wireless interference so in general I suggest trying to have as few sources of different wifi signals as possible. But what you are talking about is more likely due to "Quality of Service" QoS (or lack thereof) that the tmobile gateway has. You'd likely get better multiple device concurrent performance sending all the traffic thru the Orbi with some level of QoS enabled.

I don't know what T-Mobile was thinking when it made this device. Its so limited in what it can do other than just surf the web or watch netflix, etc. I'm also having problems with it using multiple IPs at the same time which make it impossible to log into any website that uses my IP as part of the security. I had to start using a VPN to get around this problem as well.

Have both the Verizon 4glte cube and currently getting the trash can replaced with the arcade due to terrible drops and signal loss. Verizon is capped at 50mbps but never dips below low 40s and is extremely consistent. Though the tmobile does typically get faster speeds on tests, the frequent drops on the trash can will kill whatever app,video,or game im on and constantly needs reboots. (Hopefully the new router fixes this) but Verizon has been much better overall.

With any cell signal, the location is normally the deciding factor. Neither is inherently superior. Some places T-Mobile is king and in other places Verizon is king. If they are both good where you are, then decide for yourself which will best serve your needs. Personally, I have T-Mobile and I’m very happy. My home internet connection is to band n41. I have another T-Mobile hotspot that connects to n71. They default to each other so I never have a loss of service.

I agree on many levels, however, between the two t-mobiles, the can was not very good where I'm at now even adding an ext antenna now for the arc it was great without an ext antenna a plus with an antenna however the latency/ping I was not able to bring up very well, it boils down to where you are located as for gaming depending on your cell tower location, time of day, etc, did excellent at my old address no issues period except the fact I had to add an ext ant because of the tin can I lived in, new address the can didn't work even with an ext. ant. went with the arc great by itself even better with an ext ant downfall could not add no more than 2-3 devices even adding the antenna ping/ latency is still a problem the fact that I like to game the can or the arc are fine really depends on your location a plus if you add an ext ant. Might I add one more thing it's a plus, plus if you can connect to a 5g antenna they are being updated where I'm at, there is one I can connect to but it's not strong enough for me to keep it because of my location and all the trees in my area. Unfortunately, I have to go with another source just because of my location the location of 5g towers, and not being able to get my external antenna high enough to reach and work as it should. It will cost me more but on a plus side adding my external will boost everything up to the level needed to game with no issues like ping//latency. Plus upgrading my antenna from a 2x2 to a 4x4 did do wonders (4x4 waveform) Thank you Nater you have helped me on a level no one else was willing I can do most things as long as I have someone willing to take time out to show and walk through each step, you were the one with your videos I was able to do just that. That means your address (according to Verizon) gets their mmWave service. You can rest it on its side on a table by a window and not window mount it to see if you can still get good signal.

It seems to get bogged down after a few days and restarting the modem from my cell phone app usually fixes the problem temporary. Sometimes I have to physically unplug, wait a few seconds and plug it in again. Inconsistant is definitely how I would categorize it. I haven't consider the external antenna because they seems a bit expensive for something I technically do not own. The modem belongs to T-Mobile. But if you could find less expensive external antennas, especially anything that is easily installable and removable, such a video would be very valuable information. I average 120-150mbps download speed with 3-5mbps upload speed on a normal day, but this past week, I've had better speeds 150 - 180mbps download speed on average!

Are all these pros and cons you listed tested with you external antenna?

In general they apply with or without external antennas. Not sure which pro/con you are referring to though.

hello friend, great video, thank you! I just had the t mobile (newer model with the display in the front...) for couple weeks now. at the beginning, it was great speeds around 300 mbps, very quick. after about a week the connection to the internet started to drop without any reason, few times a day, every day. with very good reception to the device... after searching the web I found that this is very common with this device, unfortunately. so I decided to return it, sadly. do you have/had any experience of internet just dropping from this device as well, where you able to figure it out? and does the Verizon acting up as well? thank you.

I have not had the internet dropping issue some of reported. Verizon overall is much more consistent and stable for me but that will vary based on your local signal.

Fastest my TMHI has tested is about 600 down and 120 up. Average is 300 down, 80 up. I've had this service for 3 months now, sounds like I'm an outlier in terms of test results. I have the new style rectangular gateway, at 4 out of 5 bars, near a window opposite of where the app told me to put it.

Only problem at my location, Verizon says service not available for 5g or LTE home internet. T-Mobile is available here, so it's the only choice for internet. No dsl or cable available here. T-mobile trashcan or microwave internet link with 30ft tower.

Can you take the SIM out of any of these and put them in a router that can take SIM cards?
@NaterTater
@NaterTater 2 жыл бұрын
It's a gray area. The verizon 5g allows it partly due to their c-band agreement with the FCC. T-mobile is more restrictive and are said to IMEI lock the sim but some have switched modems even without IMEI change.

Nice vid. Can the Verizon 5G be taken on the road away from the service location? Looking for a good unlimited internet for my RV. Thanks.

If you ask Verizon the answer is no. However the unit works anywhere there is signal.

@@NaterTater I heard T-Mobile also works but watching your video it sounds like it sucks. Thank you much!
