Wow! You guys sound like us when we were your ages. Usually us, my husband’s parents & maybe other siblings would “harvest” a large hog each, on a designated cold winter day, canning some, freezing some, rendering fat & making liver mush. While the guys did their things outside, the ladies prepared food & washed jars by hand. My Grandmother gave us her hand turned grinder, which we still have. At the time, we didn’t realize how blessed we were to have those needed skills & how precious was the time together. Everyone anticipated the first skillet of sausage balls we used as tasters samples, eaten in a slice of sandwich bread. After the sampling, we would determine the seasoning was good as was or needed more salt or sage or blk pepper. In the summer, we grew a large garden, providing our potatoes & other veggies. We had a mulberry tree , red & black cherry trees, walnut & chestnut. It was hard work but a good life . Carry on, dear ones, carry on!

Colby, this one was Great! Showing just this snippet about processing your meats I think could help folks look at their foods differently. I grew up raising, harvesting, putting up foods, but then life happened... Now in my 50's I'm finally getting back to my roots and I Love it! At 58 and disabled I was able to process my own goat all the way out! It took longer n I paid for it physically, but it was Great for my self esteem to know I still CAN do it!! I've canned like a crazy woman this year and it's been So fulfilling to feed my grandbabies good foods! I have 7 different animal/meats on my shelves and it feels Great! My preps have been a blessing as I've just had shoulder surgery... No worries, other than milk n fresh veggies, I could go at least a year without a grocery store (prob 2)! So I've been hibernating, eating good, and just healing. Ok, and planning what to grow this next season! Lol I bought one of those $60 meat grinders and it works SO good!! I wish I had found a man like you when I was young. You guys are living the life I dreamed of. But, better late than never!!

Good evening Colby, I’ll tell ya what! If I could, I would be so happy to be able to come and help y’all do your hog processing. When I was young, 40+ years ago or so, I used to help my family process pigs and deer meat. We also lived on what’s called “The Hood Canal, and we lived a matter of yards from our property and beachfront. If we didn’t have any food, we’d go out fishing, crabbing, shuck oysters, geoduck hunting when tides were low, and whatever else we had to do for food. We didn’t have running water but part of the property had a tiny creek in the late springtime, or we’d use an old 5 gallon Milk Can and go to our little gas station to get water. It wasn’t ideal, but we didn’t what we had to do. I was the towns babysitter at the age of 9. The farm I babysat on, needed me at times to milk the one dairy cow. I didn’t get paid much of the time but would trade my work and labor so we could have milk and cream at home. I loved working and always was excited to get to work, I walked around 4 miles early in the morning during the summer. It was a real education helping on the farm and also helping to raise two kids. That’s the way I wanted to live my life, apx., 55 years later, my dream didn’t come to fruition. I live in Western Washington so it’s a long commute to help out your family, but I’d still enjoy helping out and learning more about the Homesteading Life.

Helping neighbors, family, friends and yourselves get lower prices on feed is an awesome way to help everyone at the same time. May be more work but if it helps more families save it is a great thing! Thanks for the tour of your meat hanging room. It is very nice. We have what we call our game room that we use during hunting season, that is similar, and will be using once we get a few cows and pigs to raise for food. Thanks for the fantastic information and ideas, always. Appreciate what you do and sharing it with us!✌️🙂

That's awesome that you & your neighbors came together & figured out how to get quality feed at a better price! Lots of times when a group of people come together to do something like that you end up with people not showing up to pick up their feed or they don't pay & it just ruins the whole thing for everyone. You're fortunate to not have experienced that!

Over the last year we have been buying equipment to process meat, we are currently looking for a half pig and beef. Our cold room is all cement including the ceiling, we have a heat duck that runs through it for upstairs heating so I drilled a few small holes in it to keep the area from freezing. I have control of the temp which is so important. We are up north and it gets really cold here. Thanks for sharing.
