My dachshund went completely blind over the weekend, and I am just so devastated. This is the first little ray of hope I've had at all. He's only 9. I can't stand the thought of him living the several years he has left in total darkness. He always loved to sit on the porch in the sun and stare up at the trees. He just loved the feeling of sun on his face. I want him to have that again.

@@frannah8258 sadly, my dog passed away from liver failure not long after this happened. It also came out of the blue. He was fine one week, and the next he stopped eating and became very weak and lethargic. I’m not sure if SARDS had anything to do with it or not. I was very devastated when he went blind and later passed away, but it did give me comfort to remember that dogs aren’t fearful of aging and death like we are. In his final days he was very calm and just wanted to snuggle with everyone he loved. It was like he was ready to go and wanted to give us all comfort before he was gone. He knew his time was over and he was content with it.

I lost my dog 5-6 years ago to Sards with complications she also developed pancreatitis and passed away three months after being diagnosed with Sards. She was 9 years old. It broke our heart. She was depressed once she went blind and I cried everyday for her. There was no hope for her and I was told to take her home there was no treatment at that time for this awful disease. I am happy to see there is progress being made in the treatment of this disease and that at least this Doctor knows what to do for it. My 12-year-old Pekingese went blind two months ago and I took him to a canine ophthalmologist and they did the ERG on him and just basically told me he had SARDS and there’s nothing they can do for him! I would love to know who is carrying on this wonderful doctors legacy since he has passed away. It’s like these canine ophthalmologists just don’t care to even do research on any of this and they’re just lazy! I feel your pain, my dog went blind over night 4 weeks ago. They diagnosed him with SARDS and told me to except it as I wanted to know what else is going which made him go blind. He also has swelling around the eyes and looks like there’s pressure behind the eyes. I kept saying this to the vets but they kept playing it down or ignored me. Im seeing an oncologist this week and having him screened for cancer. Ultrasound, mri and bloods. Had a really hard battle with the vets trying to get them to refer me to a specialist for further investigation. They kept fobbing me off and didn’t want to help. Like you say, lazy and don’t really care. I showed them studies where dogs had been misdiagnosed with SARDS and had a very similar condition that is a result from cancer. I was very persistent and got the referral in the end after I emailed the specialist and pleaded my case.

Thank you. I just needed to take some notes, please ignore: SARD - Auto immune disease, imbalance in cortesol, high levels of estrogen, deregulates B and T lymphocytes so they lose recognition of cell tissue, there are no anti antibodies, B cell is not producing something against retinal tissue, but the T lymphocytes is causing a cell mediated toxicity, so it's attacking the retinal tissue. Plectnor Syndrome: total estrogen, cortesal, t3, t4, IGA, IGM, IGG. IGA is below 58. 2-3 shots given. Blood work to see if IGA above 58 then 10 days after last shot can go to oral steroid replacement.
