I always found it interesting how the Frozen Throne seems stuck inside of a dome untill Arthas broke the ice and took the crown. Then it's suddenly in the middle of a lake with an open sky.

1. There's a reason a huge number of players dropped off after WoTLK. Arthas was the final boss for a lot of players and his defeat was "the end" of Warcraft for them To the point that you could argue that Blizzard pulled the trigger on him too quickly. 2. I kind of hate the fact that Kel'thuzad and Arthas genuinely being sort of friends was never explored afterwards.

"a symphony of frost and flame" has to be an easter egg for "A song of ice and fire" aka game of thrones.

At the time, the Dreadlords' plan made sense. They were agents of the Legion, and the Legion wanted to control the Scourge to help them conquer Azeroth and other worlds. Arthas, Nerzhul and KT wanted to exist without the yoke of the Legion, especially Nerzhul because he was manipulated and tortured by Kil'jaeden. So when they started showing independence, the Dreadlords decided to stamp them out and assume complete control over the Scourge. Sylvanas only cared about killing Arthas, so the Dreadlords try to use her as a puppet to their advantage. Sylvanas turns against the Dreadlords because she also wants to be independent of the Legion, and focuses on getting revenge on Arthas. Then Shadowlands happened and we were all subjected to the Jailer's stupid 5d chess plan and none of this story makes sense anymore. Thanks, Danuser.

The reason Ner'zhul was being tortured in Torghast in Shadowlands is because he disobeyed the Jailer and worked independently. The majority of what we play through in Warcraft III isn't the Jailer's cunning plan manipulating both the dreadlords and the Lich King, it's the dreadlords thinking the Lich King is their puppet and being taken by surprise when Ner'zhul goes his own path and tries to use Arthas to gain his freedom - from both the Legion and the Jailer.

That was cool to watch. I've not played the older ones, I have copies (in disk form, or something) but never felt the need. Now I can see it. Thanks so much!

This whole thing is a bit dodgy when viewed from a post-Shadowlands perspective. Supposedly, the Dreadlord posse in Lordaeron is in cahoots with Sire Denathrius and by extension, the Jailer; but simultaneously, they deem Kel'Thuzad too loyal to Arthas to be turned against Ner'zhul. Yet, Kel'thuzad himself proudly boasts that he has been the Jailer's pawn all along before we defeat him in the Sanctum of Domination. All along, Kel'thuzad is presented as Arthas' genuine ally while the Dreadlords are framed as his enemies. In Shadowlands, however, they all appear to be on the same team and are exploiting Arthas to their own ends. Given the events of Wacraft III, it is very difficult to suspend one's disbelief when it comes to Kel'thuzad's allegiance. He dedicates himself, body and soul, to the service of Ner'zhul and then to Arthas Menethil, who are both in some sense opposed to the entity supposedly behind it all (the Jailer); he opposes the Dreadlords, who are supposedly in some sense serving the Jailer's ends; but in the end, Kel'thuzad reveals himself to have been perhaps the Jailer's most influential champion on Azeroth. "For too long I've had to disguise my true motives. Pretend to serve false masters. When all the while, it was I who helped architect Azeroth's end!" - Kel'thuzad I always looked with some fondness at the relationship between Kel'thuzad and Arthas Menethil; yet, Kel'thuzad's dialogue in Shadowlands implies that this was all pretense in service of a grand plan. This not only invalidates my personal experience of the character but calls into question all the events leading up to Arthas' ascension to the Frozen Throne. The ultimate end of these characters is then, without a doubt, emotionally unsatisfying, experientially jarring, and rationally incoherent.

the last frozen throne cinematic is probably my favorite cinematic ever, it still gives me goosebumps, Arthas hearing the voices of his mentors while going up there, its like he's letting go of the last shreds of his humanity to finally become the lich king

When Illidan returned to the BT, he visited Magtheridon who had guessed Illidan's defeat. Upon asking the demon how he knew, Magtheridon replied: "....You have the stink of the walking dead on you, and the taint of that great blade, Frostmourne....". This is in the Illidan novel, page 53, hard cover edition.

Warcraft 3: and so valiant lordaeron is a ruin ruled by tormented monsters clinging to shreds of lost humanity, conquered with treason, slave warriors and backstabing of allies who outlived their purpose. The noble paladins scattered or slaughtered and raised as horrific death knights to serve the very force that doomed them. Fair quel'thalas is destroyed, the graceful high elves near extinct the remnants holding onto sanity only by dreams of vengeance, while their prince makes ever darker and more desperate pacts to keep what remains of his once arrogant people from going feral of starvation. The mighty night elves lost their immortality, their forests burned or corrupted, forced to sacrifice the very world tree and hundreds, thousands of souls of their departed dead to defeat the demon threat. A rag tag, unlikely alliance of hated outcasts, desperates and savages gathered to defeat the greatest threat lie broken but not for long, as the Lich King sits upon his Frozen Throne, the Helm of Domination on his head and the corpses of his challengers will soon rise to serve, most of the rest of the world is unaware of his existance thinking the undead were servants of the defeated demons, all the while endless hordes of undeath await his call to flood the realms of the living. Great heroes, some from ancient times, some young and unproven yet already facing never-before-seen threats, turning into monsters to protect their homeland and people, yet not all of them succeeding and instead dooming said people. Really, only orcs kinda sorta did good, after many trials, they found new friends, new home and freed themselves from their demonic past Meanwhile modern Warcraft: don't worry we got rid of old sexist, racist writers now the new ones are free to show their genius, the story: we won, we defeated tall bad guy with deep grovely voice and oversized weapon number 17, because we are family and we work together
