What an intelligent lady. Thanks to Senior Economist Trinh Nguyen for telling truths about India. We have a long way to go.
@kbmehta42084 сағат бұрын
Trinh has exceptional insight into India and that is quite evident even in minutes 3-4 of the video. If the Indian government just pays attention to that it could come up with a serious tailor made policy on trade and manufacturing to address the obstacles that exist in the ways of trade deficit, employment and poverty in India. X

I'm so happy that ThePrint got Trinh Nyuyen for a discussion. She's always insightful, articulate and brings out a wholesome vibe as she declutters complex, multifaceted issues in economics and public policy. I hope you bring her on regularly! Thank you.

Trinh Nguyen is so well researched and her views are so well thought out. India needs to become a much cleaner and organized nation in so many ways. I don’t understand why air, rivers, streets are so dirty and getting worse.
@rationaloperator41653 сағат бұрын
Issue is our capital is freaking Delhi, which is perhaps the worst capital of any country in the entire world. We need to move the capital to Maharashtra, there are several cities better.

There is a game played where the objective is to find any clean street in India. I’ve visited so many places in India and almost every place is filthy.

What she said is right, sign RCEP or don't sign, import are still growing in India. Issue as she rightly pointed out is no priority focus on sectors. Imagine if India makes textile sector textile Tax free, provides them with with free electricity, they can employee huge labour force especially woman
@atherzaidi587132 минут бұрын
Yes but if you give subsidy to textile sector, will the shoe sector not demand it, will leather sector not demand it where do you stop? State will end up subsidizing all industry, and to generate that subsidy it will tax the citizens. Already tax from individuals has exceeded corporate tax in India. What you are suggesting is further reduction in the taxes for corporates.

@Little-bird-told-meМинут бұрын
@@atherzaidi5871 I am suggesting a reallocation of current resource. Shoe sector is not priority sector because India is not a major exporter of shoes however India is a major exporter of textile and with Bangladesh facing political turmoil India can further cement this position. That's why she said *prioritize* . Imo Corporate Tax should be increased especially for companies bigger than 5 lac crore market cap. Personal tax should be reduced 20% max. Rich anyways don't pay tax in salary income, For eg. Mukesh Ambani salary is a mere 14 crore per annum because, all their wealth is held in stocks.

Very true India has missed the bus to become a mass manufacturing hub , least it can do is start somewhere now rather than just importing
@jackWAYS41 минут бұрын
Discussion was quite good. Earlier I used to think that semiconductor manufacturing should be our top priority. Well that should be there. But, now I understand she is right as we have a lot of unskilled labour, attracting labour intensive industries like textile, or assembling parts business can secure people job, more money, thus make them consume more. Which will attract the companies to invest more as companies are moving out as there is not much local consumption
@atherzaidi587125 минут бұрын
Thing is China and rest of the world will automate the labour intensive industry also. Few years back automobile and auto parts was labour intensive, today it is all automated. The number of people needed to make a pair of jeans is shrinking continuously. India has missed the bus on use of cheap unskilled labour. A better use of this labour is to build eco friendly well designed cities from scratch. Atleast 50% of Mumbai, Kanpur, Patna etc needs to be demolished and rebuilt in a planned way.

India has to fully liberalise on all fronts and join the big trading blocks, including for agricultural products, counter-lobbying by various vested interests be dammed, if it has to truly develop and avoid falling in the middle income trap.

India's economic advisors and policy makers should visit China and find out how it developed so fast. India and China have similar population levels so the challenges will be similar. India cannot follow economic models of less-populated countries because a large chunk of the population will be left out of the growth story in that case.

China's economic growth figures are highly inflated. The country is facing economic slowdown & internal challenges, leading it to seek new growth opportunities by using calculated coercive trade practices. India's Gross FDI seems like significant increase, however, Net FDI, which accounts for inflows minus outflows was actually low. The FDI that flows in from these offshore accounts, is not for investment purposes and exits. India's private investment levels have declined since peaking in 2007-08. Other countries, such as Vietnam & Mexico, have become more attractive investment destinations due to their trade agreements & competitive policies like concessions. India's trade deficit is with the 9 out of 10 trading partners. While, union govt blames farmers for the country's manufacturing challenges, just because they are farmers. It is not farmers fault that half of all jobs in India is in farming today. To boost investments, the Indian govt should focus on improving the business environment & easy of doing business in India, simplifying govt's complex policies & regulatory hurdles. And industries has to invest in upgrading skills & training programs in state educational institutions.
