I really hate the trend for people to say "this was written by AI!" every time something bad comes out, given that I've studied LLMs and very often the "made by AI" argument is pinned on stuff that no real world AI can actually make; they aren't nearly as powerful as a lot of people seem to think, it's a lot of marketing hype with credulous tech "journalists" propping it up. That said I truly do believe Ascension's script was written at least in part by ChatGPT; not because it's bad (though it is), but in the specific WAYS it's bad. Characters speaking in constant non-sequitors and talking past each other? Check (because it can only ape dialogue from source materials, it doesn't actually understand how humans communicate.) Characters dropping bombshell revelations completely unprompted and everyone else barely reacting to them? Check (because it can't tell the difference in emotional impact between "BTW I want a burger" and "BTW I'm a serial killer".) Constant repetition in dialogue and plot? Check check check. Those are all ChatGPT tics. The alternative is that the writers on this thing are staggeringly awful and don't have the slightest glimmer of emotional intelilgence. I'm not insulting them by saying it reads like GPT raw output, I'm being kind by comparison.

I think part of the thing is that a whole group of people writing a game script together can essentially emulate the same problems ChatGPT has. Even with a single author, I've seen in-progress stories before where things feel disjointed like this because they're cobbled together from bits of other scenes and they haven't been edited yet. The part that's confusing is why anybody let it out into the world sounding like this.

Ok, is it just me, or does this feel "Game" feel like a silent hill game where they planned loads of context for what's happening plot wise in the gameplay, but then the player controlled sections of the game were cut out to make this player voting gimmick? Like a really good example of this is Karl killing John Cena monster, that felt like the intro to a pyramid head style encounter, but instead of a tense survival section, he just explodes. This feels like if someone strung together cutscenes from a single player multiple choice game, with just the routes they took in their first playthrough.

From what I could piece out on other sites, this is sort of what happened. It does not explain totally the bad acting and writing, but it does explain the inconsistencies in the characters' decisions, and the fact that each episode has a Withering sequence (this is where the QTE sequences happen). There is apparently a "cut content" bonus episode, which shows some of the other routes.

It's possible to see the bones of a good story in a story badly told. The Norway stuff? There was tons of potential in that. Just to give a hint to the audience of that. But after a little thought, Astrid did not even flinched at her phone like: "Huh? My ringtone changed!" Instead she just answers, like it is the most normal thing in the word; this proposes than SH2 exist INSIDE Silent Hill Ascension, and that is supported for the fact than nobody calls the town by that name, because, who would use a VIDEOGAME NAME to refer to your own town, right? So, Astrid have played SH2 on a PS2, liked the OST a lot, downloaded it and use it as ringtone; BUT How would she would actually KNOW that for a FACT, she is not like INTO videogames who we can tell; what IF THE SONG IS JUST LIKE THE -DEFAULT- SONG, that would imply than THE COMPANY who created and manufactered the phone somehow uses THE SAME SONG as a Default Ringtone for ALL the phones, IN THE WORLD of SHA. NGL. if they took out the cult stuff, and polished the Norway family side a bit more, then this could have been an interesting story. Hell, if they didn't want to say the name Silent Hills the setting could be that some government or what ever rebuilt the town (the town let them) and they changed it's name to get rid of the bad press. But after a while this incident with the shooting was the instigator for the new events. Which signaled the the re-awakening of the town. Then the cult could be a season two.

I think the reason scenes start to click now and be "good" is because of all the previous episodes of nothing. Obviously, the elements are here for a really cool story, but it's like they had to butcher and remake a story with multiple protagonists to justify the episodic format. Like, just think about Nora, the newly arrived who just ended up in a ongoing story. She's basically at the beginning of her own Silent Hill game, investigating a mysterious letter and trying to figure out what is going with Faith and her parents. All of this until now feels like a prologue to a Silent Hill story.

So I think what’s going on with Eva is that Karl was the only person who could see her because she’s been dead this whole time (she’s his daughter, yet looks half the age of Astrid). Given her conversation with Karl at 30:17, it sounds like she was the perpetrator of a mass shooting. To support this, they mention Nils (the one with the True Crime Podcast) in this same conversation, who mentioned being a survivor of a mass shooting earlier and seems to have it out for Astrid’s family. This is why everyone keeps saying Karl’s bloodline is cursed, and why everyone keeps suspecting his family every time someone turns up dead (which, considering how his ex-sister-in-law euthanized a bunch of people, is a fair point).
