I like to think the reason Starscream is the second in command is because Megatron knows Starscream is both reasonable successfull and has a tendency to murder himself up the ranks. So in order to not lose a bunch of competent people to betrayal, Starscream gets put so high that the only target he has is Megatron himself, and he thinks he can handle the backstabbing. Of course, that does not work, but the logic was sound behind it. Promoted into a position Starscream is not a threat, yet underestimated how much traitorous energy the guy has... Somehow.

Personal TFA theory: Slipstream's personality is supposed to be Starscream's traitorousness. Think about it: without his ego and cowardice, Starscream could have managed to keep command of the Decepticons, or at the very least avoided execution afterwards. She betrayed Scream, and the canceled season was going to have her betray Megs. She even betrayed her other clones' gender.

Starscream is my absolute favourite Transformers character, and I really don’t think people understand how evil he truly is. The fandom often treats him as just simply annoying and pathetic, and while both of those statements are very true, he is not a helpless little sod. He’s quite literally a genocidal war criminal (to be fair though, most of the Transformers are) who only feels bad when it’s gotten him into trouble. I have been binge watching this channel and others like it for Transformers lore in general and a summary of the long running IDW Transformers continuity. I doubt I will ever read the whole IDW series beginning to end, but there are a few I wouldn't mind reading for myself. ...... You kinda have to wonder how Starscream couldn't figure out that the Decepticons wouldn't respect his leadership when there is an accepted mentality that the strong should rule over the weak. He's not a weakling, but he certainly isn't the strongest in terms of brute force. I suppose we could attribute this to his massive ego and short sightedness.

In Earthspark, personally his betrayal in season two, and overall his characterization, feels like a retcon. It doesn't help that the first season's writers were changed because of the writers' strike. Overall, no one liked this betrayal because it goes against the first season's message that everyone, including Decepticons, deserves a second chance. But now this theme of redemption is thrown to the trash when the only one who redeemed himself is Megatron, and he redeemed himself before the events of the show, so it doesn't count! It's unfair that he's the only one to be redeemed when all the other decepticons could too! I don't even want to know what these writers will do with Tarantulas if they even think about bringing him back!

One of my favourite Starscream betrayals that didn't get mentioned here - Transformers: Decepticons for the Nintendo DS. In this retelling of the 2007 movie story, Starscream attempted to take command of the Decepticons after Megatron disappeared in pursuit of the Allspark, pronouncing the old leader dead and a traitor. He sent an agent to Earth - the player's own custom character - to enforce his rule over the Decepticons, and to help him locate the Allspark. However, this agent soon learned from Barricade and the other Decepticons on Earth that Megatron was alive, just encased in ice - so Starscream pressured them into killing him while he's vulnerable. The agent went against him, though, opting to free Megatron from his icy prison. And just in time, because while all that was happening, Starscream nabbed the Allspark from Bumblebee and went on a rampage. The Decepticons banded together to try and stop him, and he had every one of them killed just to hold on to his position. It all came down to a final battle, where his former agent managed to wrestle the Allspark out of his hands, but not without sustaining heavy battle damage. Before Starscream could finish them off and reclaim the Allspark, though, an angry Megatron arrived on the scene. He did battle with Starscream, chasing him through the skies, and ultimately gave the backstabber his just desserts.

In my school vr game Goalius does know of 1 betrayal that lead to the Liberation of the planet Titan 4 (When he was alive he allined himself with the Atomatons and The Astro Toilets but after finding out that 1 of the Astro Toilets targets was Goalius who was trained by Megatronus Prime so he got the forces to lose there grip on the planet so The Helldivers can liberated)

Gilthor is a very underrated Transformers concept. He was made by the Quintessons, so he's an official Transformer. He could be another Bizarro type character for Optimus and the other Transformers. I say another because people say Toxitron is a Bizarro type character. But Gilthor could be like present Bizarro in the DC comics. Actually, Dr. Arkeville had already created his generator and when Megatron was believed destroyed, Starscream assumed leadership of the Decepticons and had Dr. Arkeville led him to his lab, where he rigged the generator to build up to infinite capacity to destroy Earth, the Autobots and provide a power source for Cybertron. Taken to Cybertron, the Doctor couldn't stop the destruction of Earth but wanted to thwart Starscream reaping the benefits but was electrocuted by the Sentinel Monitor (a failsafe that only allows Decepticons to handle their own equipment). Starscream then had his medicroids rebuild the Doctor to save his life.
