A signature song of the entertainment industry, "There's No Business Like Show Business" was written by Irving Berlin for the Broadway musical "Annie Get Your Gun" (1946). Ethel Merman, who starred in the 1954 film version, frequently sang the song in her many concert appearances. This improvised arrangement of the song is by pianist Charles Manning.

Points of correction: The film version was made in 1950, not 1954, and Ethel Merman, the Broadway show star, did not appear in it. The Hollywood Annie was Betty Hutton.

not improv - clearly a pre-planned and practiced arrangement

Stephen - I very much appreciate your curious and thought-provoking comment! The truth of the matter is that I played the entire Broadway show over 40 years ago. I have not looked at the printed music since then. However, through the years, I have had the occasion to hear the iconic production number and to play it in a variety of circumstances. My definition of improvisation would be a spontaneous arrangement based on previous knowledge of the melody, harmony, and rhythm; while preserving the integrity of the original composition - in other words, playing by ear. I would compare it to the difference between a memorized speech, exactly word for word, versus a speech given off the cuff, where it uses the same subject matter and talking points, but is not a literal memorization. For the performance you heard on my KZbin channel, I did not practice the song. I merely sat down and played it by ear. There is probably zero chance that it is identical to the printed music. Thank you for your comment, and thank you for listening to Piano Pizzazz!

@@PianoPizzazz You made my point. Playing from disjointed memory is not improvisation. Listen to some jazz greats for improv. Teddy Wilson - Charlie Parker- Ornette Coleman Classically trained musicians have a deficient understanding of improv because it is not part of their curiculum.
