Objectively he is correct about physics the other is subjective just like your opinion is subjective and so is mine but despite being subjective it's still the objective that physics is a subject all should learn.

I agree, and even if they were somehow objectively the most important (which they aren't, it's subjective), that wouldn't imply that everyone should be studying nothing but neuroscience and physics. One reason of course is the fact that other subjects are needed to support them, like how mathematics is needed in both physics and neuroscience. Another reason is that the brain reapplies ideas gained in one subject to another, this is one of it's foremost problem solving tools, so if people were to refrain from studying other subjects this tool wouldn't be utilized. Yet another reason has to do with reductionism. Even if we understand all of physics, does that mean we would understand the universe? Probably not, as predicting the universe at the level of particle movements is unfeasible. There is a psychological reason as well. It's hard to get interested in physics or neuroscience by studying them and nothing else, because one way interests develop is by seeing how a subject helps solve problems in many others.

@@alexgiorev7252 100%. Essentially how every single professor in college thinks that _their_ class is the most important, and every student should be stopping everything to make sure they master these subjects. I'd say sales, psychology and negotiation are 100x more important subjects if you want to survive in the world of business, but that's just my personal opinion. What Demis is recommending is great if you opt to be a scientist or a university professor, but not so great for 80% of the remainder of the population as a sole focus.

Obviously someone working at McDonald’s doesn’t need a mastery of physics and neuroscience. Demis was talking about himself.
@zkcrisyee

@@voobster8829 Demis said that those are “the only two subjects worth studying”, presumably for everyone when you take his phrase in context with what he says in the whole video. It is unclear whether he is referring to himself only, in a manner reminiscent of talking to oneself… which would be strange in front of a crowd of people and not alone in his shower. Or if he was stating this as an universal rule or deduction about everything, which he thinks should apply to everyone that exists. Or if he is deep into solipsism thinking, as if he is the only one existing in the world, and every thing he believes in for himself is automatically an absolute truth since he thinks in a solipsistic way. Who knows.

Funnily enough, In "The Big Bang Theory", physicist Sheldon argues with his neuroscientist girlfriend Amy about which subject is more important, physics or neuroscience. The argument basically boils down to that physics describes the universe, but neuroscience describes the brain which can describe physics. Hard to tell which is more "important" Both characters also thought every other subject was useless. I wonder if the creators of the show got the idea from this talk or if that's just a coincidence!

Well this Hassabis seems to be a very limited man if he claims such things. Funny, how he must now realise his mistake by hiring all these *multidisciplinary* research teams at his company, DeepMind :) Also this: What I cannot build, I do not understand ? Ok. But that doesn't automatically mean If I build something, I fully understand it. We are unable to follow advanced AI algorithms already now, in 2022.

@@programmer1840 There were different ways of saying this *not literally* and he could have phrased it as a thought experiment. The problem is.... he didn't. You're being waaay too nice for him. I mean I admire the guy myself, but that was simply stupid thing to say and I'm quite sure he would have admitted it today. Everybody can say something stupid once in a while, even Hassabis.
