@Buford Manning What in the world? Using anyone's toothbrush is gross because it's covered in their mouth bacteria. A woman using a man's toothbrush would be equally gross. How in the world does it have anything to do with gayness? I don't think gay couples use their toothbrushes interchangeably, just like everyone else.

@@Mr.Bell1122I think you took the Bible verse part a bit too literally. This story strikes me as very distinctly cosmic horror. I doubt the writer was suggesting that it was actually the biblical Leviathan down there lol. Edit: I think the way I would describe how the Bible verse felt to me was like.. "man's ignorance juxtaposed against something fully beyond man's comprehension" After all, the actual original description of Leviathan is basically a very artistic flourishy description of a crocodile lol.

"You found a way to calm it down?" "There's always a way." For those unaware, Podder is the pneumatics drill that Reg was talking about at the end. You have Hodder and Podder, Hodder being the drill that takes samples from the seabed. Podder is unfortunately built for sacrifices to the leviathan, you can tell by the way it's described as being a box with a crack in it. It's why seven people are always chosen from the rigs, to make up for the seven that will be sacrificed to appease the leviathan. Reg asked too many questions and he was therefore sacrificed. Whether Figgs was sacrificed or not via Podder is unknown, but he did realise what it was for. He likely witnessed seven crewmen being sent down in it and when he was told Podder returned without them he started putting the pieces together.

Nice use of Checkov's Gun with the carving. the PODD is not a drill: It's how they "get rid" of those who become too troublesome (and perhaps enthralled by it): By feeding them to it.

Hoter is the hydraulic drill, poter is the "pneumatic drill". This is why the story includes Hoter, and that the military loves their acronyms. You are right that it's not a drill, but it's still named (foreshadowed) as one. Great writing in this story.

There’s got to be something go on here with the literal sirens and the mythological sirens song. The word “siren” also is thought to literally have its roots in words meaning “rope, cord, tie, fasten, binder and entangler.” In the Odyssey, Odysseus has to be tied to his ship to avoid being lured in by the sirens. The song is is alluring and promises to reveal truths. If a man hears the song, but doesn’t leave satisfied, and stays to satisfy more curiosity, he is doomed and death becomes certain. I’d be shocked if this wasn’t intentional.

The characters pop so perfectly that I have virtual memories of their faces and clothes, and the story is so full and gripping It plays in my minds eye like it is an all time favorite movie of mine that I just can't find a video copy of. It almost sets the bar so high that other stories are just a way to pass time until another rare gem comes along, like a sequel maybe? Bravo sir.

Heh, I already knew the rest of the poem at 40:00 Below the thunders of the upper deep; Far far beneath in the abysmal sea, His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee About his shadowy sides: above him swell Huge sponges of millennial growth and height; And far away into the sickly light, From many a wondrous grot and secret cell Unnumber’d and enormous polypi Winnow with giant fins the slumbering green. There hath he lain for ages and will lie Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep Until the latter fire shall heat the deep; Then once by men and angels to be seen, In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Did we ever find out who Potters was? Edit: Thanks to Gespach 0 for answering. 1:14:45 The Potter is the robo "drill" sent down. The actual feeding device is the pneumatic drill, however, which is described as a metal box with a crack that runs down the middle 1:15:15. This is describing a feeding trough, which ferries live victims to the monster before opening, letting it catch its prey as they drown in the depths.

Even tho, it still lights up the day just barely, just for a while. Work camps are few and far between and there’s lots of strange action in the nights sky. Man you should do an awesome story about working rigs up there, thousands of scenarios and possibilities fir scary or haunted stories. You could pick my brain for material, I wouldn’t mind one bit! SPOILER ALERT!!!! I think the narrator is being fed to the entity at the end along with all the others who ask too many questions, want to know too much, think of it this way the entity would probably need to eat or have sacrifices given to it to keep it in a controlable state, and as for the drill described at the end, the floor had a crack down the center, and the drawing behind the book case, the hlaf circle is described as a maw. The creature caught the narrator with its gaze and from there he was doomed, unable to stop himself from seeking more answers leading him right into the jaws of the beast.

Split your lungs with blood and thunder When you see the white whale Break your backs and crack your oars men If you wish to prevail This ivory leg is what propels me Harpoons thrust in the sky Aim directly for his crooked brow And look him straight in the eye Song: "blood and thunder"

Can't be Chtulhu, that resides in the cosmos, it's defined as an " world eater ", something that big can't be in the ocean haha, maybe the Kraken but definitely not Chtulhu
