The exploits of Taylor and Welch have been well known to me since my childhood - I think most young lads born in the 60’s were intrigued with WW2 aviation - the shared last name was just icing on the cake. Great to hear your telling of their story.

Welch was heir to the Welch's Grape Juice fortune. He also saw combat in Korea.

@@War_And_Truth Actually, that rumor has been around for years, but isn't true. He was born George Schwartz and his parents later changed his name to avoid anti-German sentiment stemming from WW1. There was no connection to Welch's grape juice. (Docent, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum)

I believe "Gabby" Francis Gabreski got airborne that day but couldn't engage. He sure made up for it later with the Wolf Pack 56th Fighter Group in the ETO!. Great video and thanks from the UK. I enjoy all aviation historical accounts of whatever nation. I sometimes think of Pearl Harbour as the worst wakeup from a night out in history. How these men went from peace to war in a matter of minutes and scored victories is astounding!

There was plenty of time that the government knew what was possible and maybe this Hell wouldnt have happened. R.i.P. to all who lost their lives.❤❤❤

They knew and let it happen bcuz FDR knew that only a direct attack on Americans would be enough to urge Congress and the American people to get behind a declaration of war.

My late father was stationed at Hickam AFB in the late 1960s. I remember when "Tora, Tora, Tora" was being filmed because the planes copying the Japanese flight patterns took them right over our house. BTW: In the Hawai'ian language the "w" is pronounced like a "v".

Seen Affleck's PH movie many times as a kid when I was little for the action sequences. Now I don't touch that movie. I remember a "fun fact" about the movie I learned on TikTok. One reason for using Ben Affleck & Josh Hartnett was it would attract preteen and teenage girls. Generating more seats, let the girls fawn over their celebrity crushes and giving all those girls who do not care for history. A history lesson....well a bad one I say.

Yes it was definitely a good marketing strategy. I think that's why they have used Brad Pitt in similar terrible WW2 films.

God Bless the servicemen who fought back and died at Pearl Harbor. As for the movie, it’s cheesy, hokey, and not great, but I have a soft spot for it.

@@War_And_Truth Nevertheless the scene of the men burnt at the 1st aid station reminds us that there were more than 2,000 men killed on that day, many in horrible conditions. “Tora“ didn’t have a similar scene.

I saw this movie 20 years ago and wasn't much impressed by it. "TORA TORA TORA" - which I saw on TV in the mid-1970s - was a much better movie.

According to those in the know, low key narration appeals to a lot more people than an excited tone. I wouldn't know as I cant hear anyway. Thanks for the compliment on the video.

I came upon lieutenants Taylor’s & Welch’s stories in “Flames from The Sky”(1952) by Pierre Clostermann a Free French WW2 pilot. Among other fighting pilot stories, there are Captain William Dyess’ USA & Jesus A. Villamor’s of the Filipino Army on Bataan before the fall. I later found confirmations in the American magazine Air Progress. Regrettably, today’s young Americans, their minds poisoned 🤢 by their msm don’t know the good they miss in their culture, and how much this very culture is appreciated in the world. & I don’t mean the HhHr side of said culture.

This movie "jumped the shark" when the one guy had sex with his dead friend's girlfriend in the parachute hangar. The attack on Pearl Harbor was poorly depicted. The only saving grace for this disgrace was the Battle of Britain scene at the beginning and the Doolittle raid at the end. A much better movie would have been made on either of these subjects. As for Taylor and Welsh, your telling of the story beats the movie all hollow. Nicely done!

Seriously, that was Ben Affleck’s finest acting performance. As you have illuminated perhaps indirectly, people who watch these movies or docuseries, believe them to be accurate when what they are is mostly drama to tell a story based loosely or more tightly on truth. Keep on sharing actual history.

In light of the horrific casualties and destruction suffered by both the military and civilians, highlighting the loss of Japanese planes is kind of like saying, "But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?" Not a criticism, just my random thought for the day.
