I had several uti because i did not have enough time to go the restroom or drink water. My colleagues gave meds in 30 min. I used 2-3 hours to do it, nebulize, change foleys as ordered (i used to find foleys without date, so they are placed ? months for nurses fixed to that side of floor not need to change). I was floating. When i shifted to their side (they saod 30 min for med), it was the same 2-3 hours average. So i conclude that they skip giving meds or procedures to certain patients.

Not a nurse, but a mental health specialist at a psychiatric hospital. And yes I too have stories for days. Literally every single shift, I could write a novel on all of the wild times we be having on the unit. At this point though, after 6 months working there, a lot of the crazy stuff that happens seems so normal to me. I barely bat an eye anymore when someone starts telling me that they see things or hear voices.

I’m a psych nurse and I love your video. My job is slightly different. It’s a small 18 bed unit in a small hosp. We have psych techs to do vitals and there are two nurse so we split the patient equally. I agree what you said about keeping hydrated! I’m just recovering from UTI and kidney stones....I need to do better. I love my job and I can’t stand when people say “I don’t know how you do it”. Like, hello, it’s all nursing! Them dementia patients on med surg ain’t no different! When I was in med surg I noticed that most patients had psych issues, they were just on med surg because they are sick.....I’m over med surg and now I say “I don’t know how you do it” to the med surg nurses....lol!

+NurseJackie Oh no!! I used to get UTIs REALLY bad in neuro. The pushing/pulling of patients made my back fall further out of alignment and it was compressing the nerves to my bladder smh. After a few years of adjustments at a chiro I don't have the issue anymore THANK GOODNESS. And yeah I TOTALLY feel you. People who work in even higher acuity are silly to ask how we do it like chile most of the time it's not NEARLY as bad as what yall have to deal with lol. IV's beeping all night. Bed alarms going off all night. Pain meds around the clock etc. Yeah...naw I'm good. Been there DONE THAT and won't no mo lol

I’m glad you posted this because I was wondering if psych was a little better than Med surg. I did a med surg floor briefly but didn’t really care for it. It was a lot going on and you’re right you get psych patients there as well. And I was like I didn’t know I signed up for this cause we had a lot of people with mental health issues. Plus you have to deal with that on top of everything else they got going on was a lot. I’ve been considering trying psych out.

You are right about the 15 minutes when nurses are peeking in the rooms, I was in a psych ward for 5 and 1/2 weeks. I’m a lite sleeper and I have insomnia so it really doesn’t help. I’m a veteran so I was in the psych ward at the VA. Some of the nurses there were horrible, they would be in the halls loud and laughing while we were trying to sleep. It was a lot of hoopla going on.

Current nursing student here! First thing I wanna say, I LOVE how organized you are. Your organization just motivated me. I'm currently in a psych rotation at a long term facility & I love it. I'm so intrigued by the patients I encounter , especially the ones with a criminal background. Honestly I would say remember that you run the risk of violence in ANY area of nursing...it's just in this area you are AWARE of the risk. While some (mainly long term) or extremely acute clients can be a risk to your safety for the most part, you have nothing to worry about. I've yet to be put in harms way after almost 3 years (knocks on wood)

+Autumn Norberg absolutely you can! I'm not a "shy" person per se but I'm a complete introvert and I'm still able to be a really great nurse despite that. When you're passionate about something, you'll naturally come out of your shell!

A lot of nursing is “listening” to patients, so you may even have an advantage. Also, shyness & social anxiety can be overcome with experience. The best learning happens when you push yourself out of your comfort zone. I’m currently in nursing school and it seems that everything I do or have to do is out of my comfort zone (especially during a pandemic), but that’s part of learning and growing. The more you do things the more comfortable you get. Don’t let your fears stop you from reaching your dreams. For example, a part of me is terrified to be a nurse, but I’m more terrified of not becoming a nurse and all my hard work be for nothing. To reiterate, your shyness is nothing to be afraid of. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and many times our perceived weaknesses are actually strengths, or can be used to our advantage. 😉😘

+lunachic 1 Thank you so much! TBH, most of the time it's a MUCH simpler job and less stressful than med/surg because everyone has to be medically cleared. So there's no IVs, etc. Which makes it 10000% better lol

It's just a matter of what type of facility you want to work in, what area of psych, and what pay you're looking for. Just remember psych can also be one of the lowest paying. Which sucks lol

This is so comforting. I wasn’t sure weather or not to believe the nurses I shadowed during clinical when I would pass their meds and then do assessments for about 2 hours they would be like okay I have to go chart now. Even though I just charted for their patients while we were in each patient’s room. I’m glad they only chart 2 hours a day lol I didn’t get into nursing to sit at the computer all day.

I do 12 1/2 hour night shifts at a crisis center. We do substance abuse, mental health, and dual diagnosis clients. Crisis stay is 3-5 days, and recovery is a 28 day program. The dual diagnosis clients usually start on crisis and transfer to the 28 day recovery program. I LOVE my job. Especially being dual diagnosed myself I get to really help those who are where I used to be. Maybe not as bad, and maybe worse, but we’re all in it together and work towards the same goal. It’s not always the easiest of jobs, and is def NOT for everyone, but for those of us that feel like it was made for us to do, it’s almost not fair we’re getting paid to do it.

I was in a psych ward for a few weeks (OCD + Depression isn't a good combination) But it is really interesting seeing it from a different point of view. I remember the nurses made me feel so much better and comfortable during my stay, even though most of the process was literal hell.

+Balthasaurs Rex Typically when I'm in my depressive state my anxiety doesn't kick in, thankfully...that would be hell to deal with! The mind is an amazing "creature" but hell when it's not working "right". I'm glad you received good care from the nurses that serviced you. Not everyone does!

the brain and human behavior interests me so much!! i originally planned on majoring in biology/psychology next year for college but being a psychiatrist takes sooo much time and money. so i’ll be majoring in nursing instead 😁

I watch tons of nursing and Hair videos and make sure to “like” them whether I like them or not just so the KZbinr gets credit for it(or however YT pays people🤷🏽‍♀️). I rarely subscribe tho bc I like the recommended videos on my home page are ambiguous. That said, this is the best go to work with me video I’ve ever seen! I have 1 year left in nursing school. Already thinking of a masters program CRNA or Psych NP. I’ve been a tech for 4.5 yrs and bedside just isn’t for me. I already know this about myself. I worked 4 of those years on an inpatient psych facility and besides being attacked by a psychotic patient I loved it! (I have a Bachelors in psych.) The idea of travel psych nursing is something I never considered before! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! I also subscribed seeing your debt free journey at the beginning of the video! You peeked my interest to watch more of your videos.

I'm actually putting another video out, very similar, but showing the difference in responsibilities based on the type of facility, etc. I thought about CRNA or Certified Legal Nurse Consulting. I think if I went past where I am now I'd choose the CLNC. I LOVED school but now that I'm almost 30?! yeahhhhh naw. LOL

My experience with psych nurses has been pretty negative. Psych wards have always been so cold, and the atmosphere has made me quite sad. A lot of it is lack of specialized training, throwing traditionally trained nurses in to psych wards, and giving them minimal training, just because the special training isn’t as available. This also leads to understaffing so nurses really don’t have the energy to be compassionate and friendly. Keep in mind this is just my experience from visiting friends and family, and things I’ve heard from psych nurse friends.

I can agree with that. You really have to have a special passion for psych to be a great psych nurse. I find that some of the best psych nurses have had their own bouts with non-psychosis psych diagnoses like depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, etc.

Very great video I’m interested in becoming a nurse and working the mental health field....I felt that you didn’t seem like you wanted work at the hospital but as the video progressed and it was just a rough night, you seem to have a love for your job and it was just a rough night. God bless you for work at a hospital.

+Lexi Coleman The mental health field can make you very exhausted mentally. It wasn't so much of a rough night as it was just super busy because we didn't have a tech. The charting is ridiculous to have to get up every 15 mins for rounds lol

Ahhhh the night shift blankie! I use mine all the time too. Except we dont have a blanket warmer so we have to warm ours up with our cold bodies. 😭

Our med rooms at my regular job are 73-80degrees so noooo blankets EVER lol Some of them get up to 88 degrees. Ridiculously hot lol
