Honestly I just think it’s fucking rude and condescending for people to say ‘he should want better for himself’ or ‘he’s too complacent’. HE IS HAPPY! Money is not the answer to life, it helps but is not the answer. He has raised his kids, a whole family, is married, loves being social and meeting different people everyday. He IS a success. And yall don’t know him??? He may have HOBBIES where he is pushing himself and learning different things everyday.

I’m from Chicago, right now the minimum wage is $12.00. He’s getting paid 14 an hour + tips. He is doing just fine AND he’s happy with what he does. There are people who wish they could work a minimum wage job. People who were living fast when they were younger and now have a background of careless mistakes that are considered crimes that won’t allow for them to even clean a toilet. This man is grateful and happy and I think people should learn from him.

No benefits though? The wage is fine but what is he going to retire on? What if he gets sick? It’s disappointing that after 50 years they are not taking care of him as an employee. That’s why people don’t work for one company for so long these days. They pick up and go where the grass is greener.

True, but maybe the wife has insurance through her employer. Also, the gov help in Chicago is actually really good. I you need the help, they will give t to you. Maybe his work place doesn’t take that into consideration, however, I doubt his family wouldn’t take care of it. Idk just my thoughts.

@@biancaredifer6570 I doubt they could do that on his salary alone. If they did, they were living hand-to-mouth. Remember, he raised kids, paid a mortgage and housing-related expenses, groceries, utilities. If you could really do that on a minimum wage salary, people wouldn't be moving out of those jobs so much. People would stay in them much longer. And yes I know he has tips and I'm sure those help.

This story is a great example that you don't need tons of money to live a satisfactory life. This man worked hard and used his money WISELY to provide for his family. You can have a high paying job, but if you don't budget right, you will always feel stressed and unsatisfied. I'm glad the ladies on the real have this mentality and don't perpetuate the idea that money is everything.

I think it is humble and better to be happy at your job than miserable making alot of money. However, Some people are just used to less so they don't expect much. I like what the other lady had to say. I wish they would've allowed her to expand on her point.
@peanutjelly727
@peanutjelly727 5 жыл бұрын
OneIn AMillion Absolutely. I really liked the point that she was making. If he were raised to have a higher quality of life, he would be working to maintain that standard. But if you grow up dirt poor and starving, doing a little better than that is enough. Also, this was a black man who started working in this restaurant in the 1960's, at the height of Civil Rights and segregation. Racism towards blacks was prevalent and black people were being denied employment due to their race, so he was probably grateful to be a gainfully employed black man. Growing up during such a tumultuous period for black people, he might have been socially conditioned to be grateful for the bare minimum.

rachel shia me too, but maybe it's us projection🤔 idk. I just know I wouldn't be happy staying at my job for 50 years because I don't like it. it doesn't simulit me and it's boring I'm doing it because I got bills to pay. At the end of the day I know money is not everything but I'm tired of people pretending like it's not useful and needed. Or folks are crazy for not wanting to be broke anymore. It's hard ASF out here and I truly think most people just want to be comfortable financially. Most are not. If he really is happy then good for him honestly that’s dope.

I agree. Money/status/things don’t make someone happy and it isn’t healthy to be constantly wanting something else. This man is happy doing his current job everyday. That’s awesome! It would’ve been a kind gesture on the part of the company to offer him a raise for his long service. Why not pay people for their efficiency instead of just their job title? The condition for a raise should not be solely on changing post.

Why are the managers trying to move him to a better position in order to pay him more? A position he does not want? Just give him the raise, purely for loyalty and for what he is to your business, even if he stays in the same position.

I honestly think it goes back to knowing and understanding your worth.. yes i do agree you should do what makes you happy however this individual has shown dedication work ethic and providing excellent customer service throughout the years... I feel that even if he didn’t want to move up with the company they should compensate him for his hard work. I know someone who did the same thing for a retail company and when they went under she was left with a measly 1 week severance check... I feel that at the end of the day certain jobs will only view you as a number and not a hard working individual and he shouldn’t be taken advantage of!
