So she couldn't speak English, when hololive English began. That is dedication. I can understand her clearly. While English is a somewhat complicated language, one of the benefits of it, is that you can more easily infer context even when certain sounds are missing. On occasion, I can't understand every word Raora says, but that is true of pretty much all English speakers, with the exception of people like Fauna who pronounce every syllable on a regular basis.

This is what "motivation" can do. All the cool stuff is in English, and there's so much material available. Plus, as a European, she doesn't "start from zero" like people in many other countries do, or like people who want to learn a drastically different language not present where they live do. Italy shows American movies, and people there read English books. And schools teach English. Italy is the 35th most proficient country in the world for ESL. For reference hololive fans would get, Japan is 87 and Indonesia is 79. So she has a lot more support and her "zero" is a much more scaffolded "zero" than Japan's "zero." So 4 years SOUNDS impressive...but realistically it's more like "4 years of actual focused training after neglecting it until then". A-chan's progress is a lot more impressive IMO, from my perspective as an ESL teacher. Also she did EXACTLY what you should do to improve language! Surround yourself with that language AND USE IT! Language isn't just facts to learn, it's skills to practice and muscles to keep in shape. Reading a book about lifting weights isn't going to magically make you able to life 100kg and reading Genki isn't going to magically make you able to perform Manzai. YA GOTTA USE THAT SHIT, YO!

@@-ZH i want to add that the quality of education isn't always great... of course this might vary from area to area, and i'm sure there's good teachers out there! but the ones i've had were all incompetent, even though my high school specialized in foreign languages. i didn't learn anything in school. it's pretty sad :/
@Iqnacio.
@Iqnacio. Ай бұрын
This much improvement in 4 years doesn't "sound" impressive, it *is* impressive period. I'm not sure what's the point in comments like this one, on one hand you ended it by recognizing she did things as "you should" but at the same time it honestly comes across like you're trying to downplay it for no real reason. To begin with, it's quite the generalization to think that because a country has a good ESL proficiency score, everyone from there has a relatively good understanding of the language or a good "basic knowledge", for starters cause these rankings are usually somewhat "padded" just from the nature of how they are measured, since it's either measured through things like school or college tests where their knowledge is fairly more fresh in their minds and/or higher than the average person, or from people _choosing_ to take other tests which implies that they are people with *at the very least* a slightly stronger interest in the language and/or their proficiency level than the average citizen that doesn't even know about those tests. Plus, I don't really see much of a point in making a comparison with A-chan (or comparing anyone to anyone else for that matter) since each person is different and we don't know anything about their specific contexts growing up or the level of English education in their schools, nor what things they had access to while improving their ESL proficiency (as an example just "consuming" the language on your own is way harder than doing so while being guided by a teacher). In other words even IF she had a somewhat better English education and using the same example you made, she could have effectively been the equivalent to "I used to lift about 5kg 10 years ago" and then going from no exercise at all in 10 years to lifting 100kg in 4 years, sure that's not going from "absolute zero" as it's a tiny bit easier to regain muscle than starting from scratch, but it's still starting as close to zero as you can get. Since she said she didn't speak a single word beyond the most basic knowledge possible, her case seems to be something along those lines.
@chuketsu1458
@chuketsu1458 Ай бұрын
@@Iqnacio.I completely agree with u on that. I've seen multiple comments who say it's "easy" but it's not because it's easy for you that everyone should have 0 trouble to learn it. Just show some appreciation to someone who's passionnate to the point to learn a new language is just fine! We all struggles on things so why not just encourage others rather than down speak them.. 😔

@dingusuhum
@dingusuhum Ай бұрын
don't worry about "fluent", worry about "communicative." as long as you can understand people and they can understand you, even if you struggle sometimes, that's the goal, and once you can communicate with others, you will naturally keep progressing and building your repertoire. and as for this or that language being hard, just remember - if babies can learn it, so can you.

I've been studying Japanese since about March last year. Learned the writing system completely self-taught using an old online blog's classes, and eight months of arduous constant practice later in late October, I hired a tutor for private classes so I could learn grammar and practice speaking the correct way. Now he says I'm at the level of Nihongo that would take most people 3 to 4 years 🤯 I'm not sure if he was just being nice, though. 日本語は難しいですがとてもやりがいですよ。So if you enjoy the language, keep on practicing and it WILL pay off. がんばって!

Just a heads up, there is a copyright troll that seems to be falsely sending copyright claims on the BGM she uses. DOVA syndrome allows the use of their music, but someone is doing it and pretending to be them.

More like 5 at this point.. And she had English at school, she just didn't care about it and the teacher wasn't good either. Same as me suddenly getting German in 8 and 9 grade, even though my brain already got used to English way too much (as a second language). So I don't know German, despite "studying" it at school in the past.

This reminds me of a co-worker who was a native Spanish speaker & said that learning Italian actually helped him learn English. He recommended it as a “transition” language between English and Spanish.

Oof, 4 years ago would have been right when the pandemic was worst in Italy, I remember it got really bad there. Probably no coincidence she got into streaming I guess.

I always tell my students that accents are important, as long as people can understand you, you're safe. And Raora's accent is not only understandable, it's cute

If you took 2-3 hours a day to learn a language, continuously for 3-4 years, you definitely can speak it as well as Raora speaks english right now. It does take me around the same time too to learn Mandarin as my 3rd language. With dedication anything is possible, stay hard 💦

Before she says anything about accent, all I hear is normal english. Now I can't unsee that the way she says has "accent" that's different than anyone else. I think it's normal for you to just hear it as normal when you live in a country full of different accent be it your native language or english 😅
