I vastly, vastly underestimated how many episodes Superintendent Chalmers was in, going into this project. He's ending up getting the longest Simpsons Histories vid (so far) because he played a key role in so many random Simpsons episodes. Ended up leaving a bunch of stuff on the cutting room floor to keep this thing from going 35-40 minutes long 🤣 (Also this ends our run of Simpsons Histories vids. Probably an Extra Seconds next.)

It's never left my head that Bill Oakley once said that Chalmers is a foil to Frank Grimes of all people, in that he refuses to look too hard at anything and merely goes along with all the idiocy he encounters.
@Solid_Hank

If Chalmers knew he was in a wacky tv show, Frank Grimes being the opposite would make sense because his frustration would be more warranted.

Damn, that really makes me wish that Frank Grimes and Super-Nintendo Chalmers shared a scene where Grimes points out how Chalmers ignores the ridiculousness around him, and Chalmers just agrees with Grimes before walking away, like that would be an amazing interaction and of course Grimes' reaction to another character *actually* seeing what he sees and simply not caring would be hilarious

I think that Chalmers doesn’t hate religion per se but holds separation of church and state very sacred. He only objects to it when it is present within a school
@umusuuk
@umusuuk Жыл бұрын
and with the history of the whole debate about religion in US schools, it does track that a Jewish person would be on the side against religion in school and bristles at an attempt by a fundamentalist Christian to insert religion into school. Because overt religiosity in school tends to have turned jewish kids into outcasts in a christian majority.

Came here to say this. Chalmers likely has no problem with religion or prayer, but it's his job to uphold the separation of church and state. Teachers in a public school can't lead a prayer.

One thing I always thought was weird about the "steamed hams" scene is how he constantly yells "Seymour!" Instead of "Skinner!" It may be because they're off duty, but still it feels weird, I believe it's the only time this happens in the whole show, and Skinner still calls him "Superintendent Chalmers".

Please do a Simpsons Histories on Maggie! I feel like "The Forgotten Simpson" remains somewhat of an enigma on the show, and she's well overdue a deep-dive into her unusual role and legacy. She will often be completely forgotten about for long stretches, then randomly pop up for a B-story or an iconic spotlight moment before receding again. Weaving a non-verbal character into a show that relies so heavily on sharp dialogue must surely be tricky. But the actual possibilities for non-verbal comedy are boundless, and it's always interesting to see how the writers find ways to have her interact with the rest of the cast, and it actually makes me sad sometimes as to how much she is ignored. Every time they throw in a "secret genius" gag or a sardonic facial reaction shot of her my heart cheers.

It’s so interesting how things go in a show this long. Skinner is exclusively a side character for Bart but as Skinner slowly became a more important character we have to give him a character to go against. And then once that character becomes more important he gets his own daughter to get a full story. It’s like if we got episodes based around Nelson’s dad’s best friend or if Maya starts getting episodes with her mom

The "D.A.N.K." joke is making fun of "D.A.R.E." which claimed to be education to keep kids away from drugs, but in the classrooms they were straight up teaching children how to identify different drugs and where to buy them. It's kind of a dark joke and maybe a little out of character, but the Simpsons have always had some pretty dark jokes hidden by surface level hilarity.

Cletus and the whole Spuckler clan have gotten a surprising amount of spotlight episodes these last few seasons. Recently we've seen Cletus make a fortune as both a helium salesman and country singer. I particularly liked the recent one where Brandine reveals she's secretly educated herself and developed a taste for culture, for alienates Cletus as he feels they no longer can relate to each other. It gave her some surprising depth, and I liked how the main thing she missed was her kids, not just Cletus. Like, good on the writers for remembering that a character who is a parent would probably have other priorities than just their romantic life. And the ending was very sweet.

I always saw Superintendent Chalmers as the more "stereotypical" boss character to use for gags related to dealing with your boss compared to Mr. Burns. Mr. Burns isn't just Homer's boss, he's a evil billionaire corporate executive, and there are plenty of jokes you can make with that alone, to the point where being Homer's boss almost feels like an afterthought sometimes. Chalmers feels more down-to-Earth in comparison, though admittedly, I had a hard time gauging his personality outside of his relationship with Principle Skinner until I saw this video. This is why I love your Simpsons Histories videos, Mr. Jims!

So happy to see Chalmers got his spotlight! Really caught me off-guard when you mentioned he and Skinner are basically mirror images of eachother, it really adds that extra wrinkle to their relationship. I think Disco Stu would be fun, he's such a bizarre character compared to other regulars. Most characters fill some type of role outside of jokes (Mel is Krusty's sidekick / delivers exposition, Uter counts as world building for Springfield Elementary so it's not just a bunch of randos at school). But Stu is literally just a gag, he has no uses for stories aside from disco jokes and yet he still managed to become a regular, it's kinda magical honestly.

He's one of those characters that is always around because local politics are good plots for the town but very rarely gets the spotlight himself.

I'm not sure if it's my all-time favourite scene with him, but I've always really liked the whole Honda Accord sequence that opens Lisa's Date With Density. Chalmers gets to deliver funny lines that aren't just reactions to Skinner's antics and which subtly reveal a bit more about him ("from point A to point B, and on weekends point C", "What's the point of having a Honda if you can't show it off?"). It's the first instance where you can laugh not just to what Chalmers says but also to him as a person. Plus I love all of Skinner's comments in that scene, the dramatic shot of the stolen hood ornament, and Skinner and Chalmers getting caught red-handed while trying steal another hood ornament from Kearney's car.

oh, I definitely would love a Cletus history! Chalmers is interesting, because as you said they really whipped that catchphrase to death, which is a pretty stark contrast to how they dropped the old Bart catchphrases from the early days ("I'm Bart Simpson, who the hell are you?" "Ay, caramba" [ok, that one did stick around a lot longer], "Underachiever and proud of it" etc) and even did a Bart episode about a catchphrase being run into the ground ("I didn't do it") and apparently didn't learn anything from it...

Easily my favorite Charlmers line, probably in my top 5 Simpsons lines of all time: Oh, I have had it, I have had it with this school, "Skinner! The low test scores, class after class of ugly, ugly children!" Something in his delivery just absolutely slays me. And I think it would make sense is Chalmers himself was raised christian, but not actually religious himself, and Rosemarie was jewish, making Shauna jewish as well. Like Frasier/Lilith/Freddie.

Btw, inspired by you, for the first time I went to The Simpsons Archive and checked how fans perceived the classic episodes at the time. I was expecting praise after praise, but boy was I wrong! Episode that instantly came to mind as a widely touching episode was "And Maggie Makes Three". It's all good to have differing opinions, I'm not mad, just surprised. Chalmers has always been cool to see with how he plays off Skinner, ands it's hard to pick a favorite moment with him for me personally, since there's so many good ones to choose from other than Steams Hams of course. I would like to submit my usual picks for the next Simpsons Histories which include Lindsey Naegle, Agnus Skinner, Duffman, and my two most recent suggestions, Santa's Little Helper and Snowball 2. This episode was, no joke, one of the best things you’ve ever done. And I’m including that time you saved that lady from drowning when you were eight. I am saddened that Leopoldo didn’t even get a name check, however. I vote “time/space nightmare,” BTW. I’ve long assumed that Simpsons episodes often don’t happen in linear order. Regarding Chalmers and religion, I’d suggest this read on it: Chalmers himself was Jewish, but not terribly observant or religious in his own, and tolerated his wife’s Christianity. OR, if you prefer, Chalmers was nominally Christian and his wife was Jewish, then, after she died, he converted and poured himself into his new Judaism because it was the only aspect of his wife that was still there, and maybe he’s trying to make up for not taking that part of her life more seriously. I tend to assume the latter because we never see him at church WITH anyone, and I know a couple people IRL who were in similar situations. Mocking religion in general could have been that “angry with God” phase a lot of people go through after losing a loved one. Y’no, if you’re the kind of person who’s into headcanon and making sense of retcons

Chalmers is one of those characters that doesn't play a center role in much but the show would be so much different without him, he just adds a lot to the scenes he is in even without doing much. He shows how much a straight man can play in a comedy without needing to really do too much else.

I know tackling this instrumental of a side character might be too big of an undertaking for a simpsons histories, but I think Ned Flanders would be such an interesting candidate, particularly because his character evolution is so contentious that it spawned the term "Flanderization" which I have heard so much in non-simpsons-related media critique over the years. It might be cool to cover how much his personality really was "flanderized" and the many directions the writers have tried to take him in. This might not even have to be a full simpsons histories, it could just be a video about "Flanderization" in a similar style to your analysis of "Jerk-ass Homer" since I think they're similar concepts

On a side note, you mentioned the Lenny and Carl-esque jokes about them being "couple-like" and honestly? Those moments have really gotten me to ship these two. @@danielshaffer-green5684 I find it odd how, even though we get an established catchphrase and two different settings, he’s never been a lead in an episode. Also, the fact that he’s seemingly an average, if not mediocre guy makes for the loser jokes to be funny but also for a lot of jokes where he’s weirdly loved by Springfield. We get him nominated for an Oscar, being a war hero and the kids exclaiming “not Lenny!” On the other side, we get a lot of jokes on him being a loser, being really average, and being really wimpy.

I think the best way to describe Chalmers in a single joke, is when Flanders is in charge of the school and everyone is going nuts. Bart shows him that mess and he just goes "Yeah, but this is probably how everything's gonna be eventually". It makes you wonder, how much does he turn a blind eye to on purpose. Maybe, unlike Grimes, he learned that the wackiness and insanity is just a part of what he signed for, and that he has no time for that nonsense.
