On the midweek supplemental episode of The Knife Junkie podcast (episode 566), Bob "The Knife Junkie" DeMarco looks at his growing collection of tomahawks and hatchets, including a couple by Cold Steel, several Wingard Wearables, and an Elmer Roush Spike Tomahawk, among others.
Bob begins the show with his favorite comments of the week. In his pocket check of knives, it's the RESCO Instruments MDCF, Victorinox ALOX Pioneer X, the Regiment Blades Low-Viz, and his Kershaw Iridium (Emotional Support Knife).
In Knife Life News:
• Al Mar Brings Back the SERE with TOPS
• Cool New Takedown LionSteel Shown off at Shot

Meanwhile, in his State of the Collection, in keeping with the theme of the show, Bob looks at a couple of "oldies but goodies," the Estwing Camper's Axe and Rockforge Camp Axe. He also notes that you may want to pick up a Lansky Puck Dual Grit Sharpener to care of your tomahawks and hatchets.

I have a passion for tomahawks. Have a fighting manual called "The Fighting Tomahawk" by Dwight C. McLemore. From Crkt, Cold Steel, RMJ tactical, ATC and handmade by the McCoun family of DeWitt Va I find that I love them and their part in American warrior culture. I picked up a trainer at the 2024 Blade show Atlanta and will be looking to do another Apache Knife combat class and use it in the training. All tomahawks are axes but not all axes are tomahawks. Favorite "Hawk movies"? Last of the Mohicans and the Patriot.

Hey KJ… Pretty new to your channel and enjoying your flair for the addiction. Lots of great content and appreciate the pocket check shorts. Good callout on American Primeval…lots of exposure to various knifes and other weapons/tools of the period. Thanks for breaking out and sharing the long handles! ✌️🙏🇺🇸

I sarcastically said “yeah right” when he said we all have a bedside tomahawk. Currently watching this on my bed and I looked over on the nightstand and lo and behold, a Turner CNC TLAX tomahawk is sitting on top of the nightstand lol.

You know, you keep making me do comments :) Any ways it is a Francisca, no "H". Used by the Franks, who later became the French. They where built to be a projectile weapon, and thrown in volley's. Often times as many as 50 would be thrown at a time. Used to break up an enemy formation, or at least make then duck. I also have one, but I got mine from Condor Tool and Knife. I've not thrown it yet, because it is winter where I live. Maybe in April.

As some one who has been collecting and throwing Tomahawks for many years. That CRKT folding Hawk, is not a camping tool. If it has a spike on the back, its a weapon. If it has a Hammer on the back, that makes it a tool/weapon. Spike Hawks are nice, and make good weapons, but carry two. Because you will get one stuck, if you use the spike, nudge nudge, know what I mean, know what I mean :)

I have 21 assorted Tomahawks, Hatchets and axes. Some axes for chipping and felling tree's, and some for chipping and felling "Softer" targets :) I even throw Tomahawks. Its odd as of this posting, the only knife I have used is a bread knife to slice a biscuit in half ;) I did clean my Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII, and run it through my Ken Onion Work Sharp. It was one of my Grail knives. But I own it now :)

That spike hawk, with the damaged handle. Get a permanent magic marker, of the proper color and just cover up that bad spot. If you do it right, you will hardly if at all, notice it.

A couple weeks ago we took a weekend trip into the back country..pretty deep....14 miles in.... we just went out for a couple nights.. and between us....we remembered to bring everything we needed!!! Except... the kitchen knife.. that was my bad..I was supposed to pack it..I didn't....I forgot..... and the only knives we had... that would actually suffice as a small food prep knife was only what I was carrying..I must have either just totally forgot..or thought I packed it.. but either way..I didn't bring one..normally I do..I have camping kitchen knives... so I was only carrying my ZT 0055 a Leatherman FREE P4 and my tkell agent 001.... and you know what.. even though it wasn't NEVER designed to be a kitchen knife... so after I got camp set up..I sat down and stropped it quick.. man alive Bob!!!! Uhhhh...sidenote... it's actually a wonderful little food prep knife.. it actually excelled...I mean it was only 2 people .. but still.. cut all the vegetables potatoes meat after.. both steak and chicken... all the peppers fresh garlic and basil..parsley... it did very well sir....I thought I would let you know!!! It also made a wonderful knife for making my " king "stick for our tarps... and all the stakes for the guy lines!!!!!carving wood well ✔ food prep ✔ last but CERTAINLY not least self defense check

Hello my friend. I live in the south of Germany, more precisely in Baden-Württemberg.Here in my countryit is too cold for growing hickory trees. We usually use ash or robinia formaking hammer- , hatchet- or ax handles. I have not yet found a significant difference between the woods in my own handmade handles, except that the factory made handles are too thick and not flexible enough for me and the annual rings (grain) are mostly in wrong angle. God bless you and your family. Kind regards, Peter

I also enjoy the Alox more than the red models. Have you tried the crkt hawk? Looks reasonably priced.

Yes the Revanant, is a good movie. But you need to see the original version: Man in the Wilderness [Richard Harris] (1971). I think it is better. Also Green River knives also came out in 1834-36. Also very good knives. The Hudson Bay Fur company was very much trying to keep the fur trade all to themselves. They made Axes and Knives to give to their trappers, and for trade. I have the Condor Tool and Knife version of the Hudson Bay knife, the big one and little one. Both very good knives.

Get Rid of the Damn Screw on your Norse Hawk. Tomahawks are Friction Fit. If you throw it with that screw, it will tear up your handle. I always remove the set screw. Go to the hardware store, get a bolt that fits the hole and threads. Screw it in so its not quite but almost flush with the inside of the eye. Oh, use Blue Loctite, to keep it in. Let that sit for a night. Then trim off the head and extra. File smooth and if you do it right, you'll never know there was a hole there. That is the worst thing Cold Steel has every done.
