Kyrie Eleison is the introduction to the Catholic Mass. It translates to Lord (God ) have mercy. It has been sung in various forms in the Eastern Orthodox Churches and Catholic Churches since at least the 8th century. While the mass is sung in Latin. The Kyrie is the only portion sung in Greek. It has always been a favourite with composers through the centuries because the simple repetitive nature of the wording allows for a lot of creativity. The standard order of service in the Catholic Church was: 1. Kyrie eleison 2. Christe eleison (Christ have mercy) - Also Greek 3. Gloria in excelsis Deo 4. Credo 5. Sanctus 6. Benedictus 7. Osanna 8. Agnus Dei 9. Dona nobis pacem Pieces would be added or subtracted according to particular use cases (Requiem/Funeral, Saints Day, or Festival(Easter or Christmas the two big ones). This music set up a natural cycle for a religious service to follow. Asking for Mercy or Forgivemess (Kyrie), Glorifying the Lord (Gloria in excelsis Deo), Statement of belief (Credo), Sanctifying (Sanctus), Blessing (Benedictus), Praising (Osanna), Removal of sins ( Agnus Dei) and Sending the congragation away in peace (Dona nobis pacem). This has been the standard order of service in Catholic Churches for 1700 years For an Athiest I know way to much about this stuff 😄
