Hey Squirrel, I think the Roly Poly reference was to one of my favourites when my Mam made it, Roly Poly Pudding. She always made hers with Raspberry Jam. Now apparently it is referred to as Jam Roly Poly & can be made with any type of Jam.

Ronnie C was born in Edinburgh, so could wear his own Tartan which this might have been, but The Royal Scots Guards have their own, which I think is similar, and he was actually a very good cook in real life, he loved baking as his father was a Baker and I think his grandfather and possibly grandmother were in service beforehand, which is someone working in a large house, or it would've been way back then. As for favourites, for myself I don't have one, but it might be because I grew up watching these two along with Morecambe and Wise and many others

Corbett was born on 4 December 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of William Balfour Corbett (1898-1974), a master baker, and his London-born wife Annie Elizabeth Corbett (née Main; 1900-1991).[2] He had a brother about six years younger, Allan, and a sister about ten years younger, Margaret. Corbett's grandfather was principal organist at St Andrews church of Scotland in the early 20th century and features in church histories of the time.

'The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town', is probably one of the most memorable series of sketches. The raspberry sound being supplied by a certain David Jason. I used to love jam roly-poly pudding as a kid. Used to get it once a week for a number of years to the point of it becoming an occasion worth looking forward to, almost as much as Saturdays and the weekend. Jam roly-poly with custard was heavenly.

You looked puzzled when they said Catterick - Largest army and training base in the UK based in North Yorkshire - and the place of my birth - also mentioned Salisbury Plain - national park area in Devon - much of it for 'practice' and owned by the Ministry of Defence - tanks, orienteering, live fire drills, etc
@YelpBullhorn
@YelpBullhorn 2 жыл бұрын
Salisbury Plain lies predominantly in Wiltshire, and not Devon, although a tiny bit of it straddles the border in to Hampshire. It is a large chalk plateau, that whilst containing many areas of natural beauty, it is not a national park. The ministry of defence own roughly half of the plain - around 150 sq miles - making it the UK's largest military training area.

@@YelpBullhorn Of course it is - I was thinking of holidays next year and where we might go at the same time and a little tired too. I also lived there at one point. In my defence I was about 2 years old. The national park is in Devon - Dartmoor - I really mixed those up.

"Trews (Truis or Triubhas) are men's clothing for the legs and lower abdomen, a traditional form of tartan trousers from Scottish Highland dress". If you run out of Two Ronnies sketches, check out the serials they made. Usually with 10 minute episodes over a half a dozen or so of their weekly shows. eg the gender reversal dystopian "The Worm That Turned". Jam Roly-Poly is a traditional British dessert A flat-rolled suet pudding, which is then spread with jam/preserve and rolled up".

Quite: Corbett is wearing the uniform of a Scots regiment, and, although he is supposed to be part of the Catering Corps, he might have been attached to that Scots regiment, and be entitled to adopt its dress. Barker is wearing the uniform of a Warrant Officer (First Class). The Catering Corps was merged into the Royal Logistics Corps some years ago, but they are reportedly thinking of spinning it off again.

Ronnie Corbett is wearing Army tartan trews. They would be correct in certain dress regulations. There are regiments with different dress regulations, for example the Royal Hussars wear crimson trousers and what was the 5th Inniskillin Dragoon Guards wore bottle green.

At the end of EVERY weekly episode would be a musical number. Those were always closing entries. Some were great and MOST to not age well tbh. I don't remember this one. Not sure of the hats but the rest of the uniform is standard 1935-50 or even later (conscription ended 1957-60 ... it was phased out) so uniforms varied

A lot of people forget Ronnie Corbett is Scottish. In this one, he's wearing a Scottish uniform. Certain Highland Regiments wore tartan trews, spats, and a Glengarry. In this he also has a Scottish accent. It was the highland regiments that brought Indian cuisine to Scotland. Check out the Indian and Pakistani armies, and you'll see they left a lasting impression on them and their uniforms as well.

@@glenkennedy2018 I'd seen something about how bad the contractors were, so I thought they'd gone the same way as many other Army units. I must confess I never made it to breakfast once I was at the Regiment, half hour longer in bed, safe in the knowledge there'd be NAFFI break.

I am being a bit biased here, (as an ex Army Chef) but you couldn’t beat them. I have sampled the food of the contractors and I don’t think it was anything to write home about. They also introduced Pay As You Dine. A lot of the lads took to making their own food in the block until the contractors found out and complained to the hierarchy. So now they can’t even make a slice of toast or a pot noodle.

@@glenkennedy2018 That's disgusting. I have no complaints about the ACC,though we did make jokes about resoling boots with the steaks and so on. Food is so important to squddie, though times seem to have changed. I've seen videos of vehicle breakdowns etc and not a can of beer in sight!

My fave was the mini series of sketches called "The worm that turned", mainly because it had the super sexy Diana Dors and others dressed up like every boys dream. Ronnie C is a true Scotsman, you can hear it in his accent through this song.

Both Ronnie B and Ronnie C came into their own with these two different comedy shows but also were a good duo.
