An interesting medley of near George Formby songs with the lyrics changed to feature members of the then cast of, 'Coronation Street.' Which, if you weren't previously aware, was, (and still is), a very long running soap on ITV. News just in: Due to a misunderstanding, Marvo the Magician this evening changed his wife and children into a sofa and 2 armchairs. A spokesman for the local hospital was quoted as saying that all 3 are said to be comfortable.

The music from several George Formby songs make up this sketch: Leaning On A Lampost, When I'm Cleanin' Windows, Chinese Laundry Blues, With My Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock, Grandad's Flanelette Nightshirt, Mr. Wu's A Window Cleaner Now, and Turned Out Nice Again. Formby is a beast of a Uke player, you should check him out. His soloing in some songs is ridiculous. I find his talents are often overlooked because of the saucy and risque' lyrics in many of his songs. But he was an awesome player, no doubt about it. This is one of my faves of the Ronnie's musical numbers, it's just a treat every time! Thanks again Squirrel. :)

I'm so glad they still made you laugh. This was very British centric, with lots of references we would all get, but would be so hard for anyone who has never seen Coronation Street, or is aware of George Formby! Well done! 👏👏👏😁

We have a soap opera series called "Coronation Street". It is the longest running tv show in Britain, maybe even in the world. It started in 1960 or 1961 and it has never been off the air. Rover's Return is the name of the pub in "Coronation Street". The names they are mention in songs are people from the show.

Hi Tony, the guy at the begining of the sketch, George Formby as well as being a huge music hall star, was a mad keen motorcyclist. He had a Brough Superior ss100 and one of the films he made in 1935 was about him riding at the TT on a homemade bike. The film is called "No Limit", well worth a watch if you can find it. You can still recognise large parts of the course today.

I'm pretty sure the dancing girl on the left in the dark jacket & cap was Ronnie Corbett's wife. She was a caberet dancer before they met and used to make occasional appearances in the show.

George Formby was very popular in the UK during the war years of the 1940's, with many of his songs having more than a dash of subtle innuendo to them. In fact, he was one of the first artists to be banned by the BBC because of it. His ukulele playing skills were legendary. You ought to check out some of his songs, sometime.

The small character in Coronation Street was Minnie Caldwell, the other one was Ena Sharples. Broadcast from December 1960. Ena was the caretaker of the Glad Tidings Mission Hall, and her hair net was almost a character in it's own right.

All the people mentioned in the songs are characters from Coronation Street in the days when my mum used to force the rest of the family to suffer our way through it. As someone else has already commented, Coronation Street started in December 1960. The character Ken Barlow (William Roach) is the only original character still in it today. Fun fact: Davy Jones (of the Monkees fame) played Ena Sharples' grandson in an episode on 6th March 1961.

Coronation Street started broadcast in 1960 and it's still being broadcast now, not repeats an ongoing show... It's near enough unbroken moving production companies only... It was announced in 2009 that As the World Turns (CBS, 1956-) would be cancelled by September 2010, meaning that the UK's Coronation Street (ITV, 9 December 1960-) would become the world's longest-running soap opera.

One of the few programs my Mam used to stop work for was Coronation Street, so I was watching along from the mid-`60`s onwards. Ena Sharples was one of the early main characters along with her long-term sidekick Minnie Caldwell. She was overbearing & keen to point out what she considered to be flaws in every other character, incl. her friend Minnie. Minnie Caldwell was a counterpoint to Ena, she was quiet, reserved & almost sheepish, she loved her cat & the quiet life. Ena was renowned for getting into stand-up slanging matches in the street, usually with Elsie Tanner. Often for poking her nose where it did not belong, into Elsie`s love life. Elsie was involved with an American Serviceman & Ena was very religious & did not approve of the goings-on. Coronation Street was my 1st British Soap Opera, I can barely remember the U.S. one, Peyton Place, though the theme still sticks with me. Featuring a young Mia Farrow & Ryan O`Neal who I enjoyed more in their later careers. The female lead was the actress Dorothy Malone, who I seemed to see in many Westerns in my later life.

The news item jokes they did at the beginning and end of each show. I vaguely remember one of the two mentioning that they both got to see the jokes that they were to read themselves beforehand but not the jokes the other had. That is why they react the way they do in those parts. It was done deliberately to get a natural reaction from each of them.

I haven't seen this since it was originally shown. It's a brilliant satire of coronation street at that time and of course George Formby, a musical entertainer from the 30's and 40's who was very risque' with his lyrics. The songs are ones that George Formby used to sing, but with the words changed. Look up George and you will appreciate this sketch even more.

I`m sure you are going to get plenty of comments explaining the "Coronation Street" aspect, but I don`t know how familiar you are with George Formby, a very well-known entertainer back in the thirties and forties. (I think there is still a George Formby appreciation society,) Back in the 1970`s, when I was young and single, I would go to the Isle of Man every year for the TT, one of the traditions being the late-night cinema showing of "No Limit", a film about the TT starring George and filmed during the races. Problem was, the cinema only had one thirty-odd year old copy which with wear and tear got shorter every year. The show didn`t start until after pubs chucked out, so you can probably imagine the atmosphere.

Ena Sharples and Minnie Caldwell were two main characters in Coronation Street in the 60's/70's and the people they sing about were some of the characters from back then Ken Barlow and Rita are still in it! Ena a tour de force with her trade mark hairnet and dressed dourly in her brown overcoat looked just like Ronnie B and Minnie who like Ronnie C was petite in stature. They were always to be found supping Sout in the snug of The Rovers Return pub and nothing passed by their sour faces as they tittle tattled (gossiped) about the people and 'goings on' in the street. Hope you don't find any Ena's and Minnie's in the bars in Florida!

Coronation Street is a soap opera that celebrates its 61st anniversary in December. The 2 Ronnies are portraying two main characters from the 60's and 70's shows. It's set in a part of Manchester which doesn't really exist, Weatherfield. George Formby was from Leicester so not sure why they made this connection between the two...but who cares as it's still funny. The clip was being presented by the 2 R's as part of their shows where all they did was look back at episodes of their shows from earlier decades and also cracked a few jokes while they were at it. And it's goodnight from me...
