I love this movie, I remember when it came out. It's pretty bleak, but an interesting twist to the typical apocalypse theme. (BTW, that's not necessarily Saturn rising at the end. He's just been shifted to an Earth-like planet somewhere in the universe, even more desolate and hopeless than before. I always wanted a sequel!)

The book, the film is based on had a similar but different plot. The is no "Project Flashlight"; John Hobson is a geneticist who wakes at 06:12am after a nightmare of falling; to find the world empty of animal and insect life. He eventually meets Api who set a similar "block road trap" as seen in the film. Both men sense a "force" trailing them. While driving in a sports car they hit a woman. They take her to a hospital but can do nothing for her. Api concludes that 06:12am is 6-6-6. Are they in hell? Both men sense a "force" trailing them again. Tempers flare and Api is killed by John; who is now alone. John discovers that the genetic experiments he was working on may have cause the disaster that destroyed all but plant life. He decides to kill himself by jumping from a skyscraper. As he hits the ground he wakes up in his room at 06:12am.

The planet (moon, actually) he is on at the end of the film is probably Titan...in 1980's they discovered it had an atmosphere (1944) with earth like elements (1981). It was all over the news at the time 'A place a lot like home : TITAN' etc. So, makes sense this is probably where he ended up.

The Quiet Earth is a “reductio ad absurdum” type of movie: it cannot be resolved. It ends in despair. I find it unsettling and depressing. I would, however, go to see a movie in which a black hole consumed earth, most of the rest of the planets, and the sun itself. No one survives, but there is a narrator who speaks about being funneled, squeezed, into an alternative universe. There, while all the laws of physics are changed, the narrator finds that his new body is going to make it.
