Thank you for mentioning CURING time. Most people don't talk about it because it requires patience, and most people don't have that. Many paint manufacturers don't mention curing time anywhere, and each paint seems to have a different time (not to mention local climate). They NEVER want to discourage the customer from buying. I find that if you don't respect cure time, strange and ugly things can happen. Also, priming: what an important step towards a successful outcome that few want to talk about. Most people are lazy and want to skip that step. A lot of people hate the word SANDING. The art of sanding well should never be overlooked or dismissed. You are a superb content provider, and a very talented artist. Thank you sharing.

Hi Christina, I have watched hundreds of videos and nobody explains things better then you . Nobody has your simplicity of visual tutoring like you do . Nobody has your warm voice and flair of the flow. My project will be my living room floor that is 99 years old coming to the conclusion that the best way to renew this floor is to chalk paint it using a blend method of two colors . As you said if you screw up you can always repaint it .

Good tips! Fantastic idea on damp brush with chalk paint! One thing I've found true and learned from a designer is to never shake paint, Especially chalk paint. She recommends you store upside down and always keep sealed as you do, but also I turn them on the side and roll them back and forth to get a good stir. Shaking paint causes bubbles in the paint which is not good for pure color transfer when painting.

I have watched tons of videos on chalk paint with Annie Sloan herself, ("on no, you don't need to prime" - really, Annie??)and lots of other videos from ladies in the painting world - and have finished alot of furniture myself, sanding, stripping, swearing - yes swearing - and staining. Having finally pried open a can of chalk paint for the first time, I painted one coat on my beautiful vintage drop leaf storage table, found bleed through so now I've sanded and primed - waiting for it to dry for a day or so, then, armed with my spray bottle and new brush, I will be re-watching your video and attempting to finish my table! Thank you!!!! Soooo helpful!

Oak is a hard one. Because the oily knots come through. Best to prime oak furniture for sure. Chalk paint will not cover it and it bleeds through. So I’d like to know if a good primer as well

Excellent presentation! A couple points I want to remember are: Don’t mix tap water in the paint. Don’t wax b4 painting & more. I love the fact that you stress that if you don’t like the end product, the color of the paint, or whatever, it’s no big deal ....it can be done over. thanks for that!

This tutorial was as close to perfect as you could get. No nonsense, the don'ts and the why. Plain and simple. I love videos that get straight to the point without all the extra fluff. I am tackling two wingback chairs; this will be my first furniture paint project. Sure, I could have started with something small, but I'm a go-big or stay-home kind of lady, so let the painting begin. Worse case, there is an upholstery shop just a few clicks away. lol

Always a good idea to moisten a brush before beginning any paint project with latex (water-based) paint. It will make clean up so much easier. Think about it: if you dip a dry brush into paint you are essentially painting the bristles themselves!

I've never used chalk paint, but I will soon. All of these tips are very useful for someone just starting and I'm glad I watched before starting my project. As an acrylic artist, I'm all about the water bottle! Nothing more useful. Curing is also important for everything from acrylic to oils to wall paint. Just let it sit and acclimate and cure and I've been much happier with projects. #6 is awesome! Don't be afraid! It's just paint and a little bit of time. And if you're creative, you can always make something work, even if it's a re-do. I can't tell you how many canvases I've covered with gesso and started all over, whether acrylic or oil. Question: I understand you can mix chalk paints, but can you adjust tints and tones with acrylic paint? Heavy pigmented acrylic paint shouldn't thin it significantly, especially if you're toning.

@@TheReclaimedHeirloom they have several different recipe on youtube that you can choose from you can pick one that will work for you as for color I usually make my own with acrylic paint but it basically goes back to you just feel it out and what works for you. I still use the wax dark as well as light depending on what ever color I'm with !!! I have a little Botique in an antique mall and buy and sell furniture as well as everything else. So I find making my chalk paint cut's the cost, so I can still make money with out over pricing.

I just found this...and thank goodness I did! I am about to do my very first chalk paint project on an antique Hoosier cabinet that belonged to my mother. It has several coats of paint and I have been advised that stripping it will most likely be a much bigger job than I originally thought. I think these tips will help tremendously!

I am a mixed media contemporary abstract artist and in my studio I use a little trick with my acrylic paints to get them to flow better. In my misting spray bottle and secondary rinse bucket I add a few drops of glycerin to my water. Why? Because glycerin makes water more wet or more slick, if that makes sense. So, I tried it one day when I was going to paint an end table with chalk paint. I added a few drops of glycerin to my misting bottle. There was a big difference in paint flow and the paint application was much smoother. Hope this helps. 😊 Note: A few drops goes a long. For a large misting bottle like the type hair stylist use, 4 to 5 drops of glycerin is all you would add.

I love this video. I wish I had watched it *before* I started chalk painting some oak kitchen cabinets that had pretty good coat of varnish on them. I've painted all of them with one coat of Annie Sloan Chalk paint original white. A few of the drawers I have painted a second time. But they still end of looking distressed and not super white. I'm thinking about doing sanding the cabinets down, applying primer to all of them and the then painting the last coat. I will say, adding water to the paint does help a lot. I think my first coat was too thick. Do you think adding the primer and sanding will help?

Great info! I live in sunny Florida and try to paint in the garage on occasion. I don’t recommend it if it can be avoided. Some pieces are just too large to schlep into the house. So glad you mentioned water in paint jars. I have one that I must have done that with and - just wow! Not pleasant to open. I assumed that was the issue, but now you have confirmed my suspicion. Can I use this on wall panelling ( new ) I'm so tired of commercial paint that here in France is about 75 euros for 2,5 litres that need sometimes three coats, it makes painting really expensive. Primer paint is just as expensive and I have a horrible memory of that. One year with a friend we took apart her dated oak kitchen, scrubbed it, sanded it, primed it, rubbed it down each time then gave it more than two coats and it just chipped and rubbed at once, not to mention bubbles as if we were painting on oil. If I had know chalk paint then it would have helped. I've not seen it used on walls yet ?

0:34 It’s not tape water that created bacteria growth. It’s that there isn’t enough preservative in the paint. Preservatives have very specific ratios. Adding water throws that off. That is adding any type of water. Tap or distilled. One thing specific to tap water is if you have hard or soft water. The different mineral could effect your project. This is why distilled is pretty much a safe bet all around. 1:23 Wax makes an awesome resist! Put wax where you don’t want the paint to stick. Great for distressing, and stenciling ! 7:43 : I would suggest to never work out of your can. Pour some in a reusable container (I accidentally discovered the bowls for hair dyeing are awesome for that.) If you have to step away, put some cling film directly on top of the paint, and stick it in a plastic bag. I have ruined so much paint working straight from containers whether it is it trying out or contamination. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for this video. I have an idea in my head and I wanted to make sure it isn’t one of your don’ts. This video was beyond helpful.

Hi Christina, writing to you from the other side of Canada (NS)! Thank you for those fantastic tips. I have a couple of questions: 1) What is the best way to store my brush between coats - taking into consideration that I sometimes (o.k. Often) get distracted with other things in between! 2) What is the best way to clean my brushes? I have two Annie Sloan brushes (1 for paint and 1 for wax). Cheers, Shannon

This was a great presentation thank you! I am painting a marble fireplace with chalk paint. On the second coat I used a roller. It shows. Do you recommend doing another coat on top with a wet brush as you say here or lightly sand first?

Thank you for your video. I recently bought my first can of chalk paint to cover a large plastic mirror frame. I'm now on the third layer to really cover the black frame. It's covered pretty well, but I wish that I had seen this video prior so that I would have done a little sanding first.

Thanks for that. I am a beginer and live in rural Queensland. And guess what I knew all of your tips. Thank you, it was so reassuring to not only think I'am on the right track but to actually know it. The only thing is A.S Chalk paint is very hard to get out here. I have had to travel to Brisbane to buy some, postage is prohibitive, so I wait until I have to go down there. Last trip I even bought an expensive wax brush and it disappeared on me and didn't come home with me. Upset me no end. stay safe
