Click here to watch our first review on the Jetta GLI: • 2019 Volkswagen Jetta ...
With a starting price of under $26,000, the all-new Mk7 #VolkswagenGLI is one of the least expensive ways to get standard turbocharged power, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual, and nearly 260 lb-ft of torque. While the #JettaGLI is no stranger to the American market, in the past the #GLI had always been detuned compared to its #GTI sibling. For 2019, #Volkswagen has basically turned the GLI into a GTI sedan and for around $30,000, it represents a $7,000 discount compared to a comparable, GTI Autobahn.

I've had mine (GLI 35th Edition + Silver P) now for 2 months after coming off a previous GLI. this car is so much better than the old one in terms of the way it drives and performs. Its fast, very nimble and very planted on the road. I've owned every Jetta version since 1984 so I know these cars well. This one is the best! Door closes with a solid thud (compared to previous GLI), driver experience is outstanding and the car looks very modern. There are some things tho that makes this car feel cheapish including trunk arms impede, some interior plastics, there is no garage door opener, no rear seat vents. Small stuff tho - this car is a great value!

Gregg F I have a Jetta SE that I bought brand new back in 2013. I have had zero problems with it. It is a nice looking car, super comfortable and the mpg is exceptional. My car average 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg in the highway. Hart to beat. I would say though that regular maintenance on this car can be a little expensive some times when compare with a Honda Accord or a Toyota Camry for example. Besides that everything else is great in my opinion. I’m seriously considering trading my SE for the 2020 Jetta GLI. This car looks good.

The Canadian Trims are so much better. Built in Navigation, Digital Cockpit Display, Sun Roof, 8" Touch Screen, and DCC (adaptive dampers with comfort mode) comes as standard in the Canadian spec Autobahn package, and it's priced at 32k CAD (24k USD). I just got the 2020 VW Jetta GLI in Red yesterday. No joke, my first day driving it, I was parked in the mall parking lot, and this woman passed by and told me she thought my car was beautiful. It accelerates quick and feels like a race car in sport mode. I just don't like how the back of the car looks. The front looks fire though.

I picked up a 35th Anniversary a week ago. Right now, if you can find one, you can get one of these for under 23K (manual version). I actually stumbled on this car while looking at a Golf Sportswagen and once I drove the 6 speed version of this I was hooked on the car. For the price you can't beat it.

Very interesting to go from considering a Sportwagen to buying a GLI, but I guess you really did not need a station wagon. I have a 2019 Sportwagen S that I specifically ordered to get the manual and the colors of interior and exterior I wanted. I prefer the practicality of a station wagon to a sedan, and the 40+ mpg on regular fuel is great. Anyway, enjoy your your VW...if I could afford two new cars it would be fun to have a Golf GTI, but I'm very happy with the Sportwagen.

@@rizzlerazzleuno4733 I had been leaning toward a sedan prior going to the VW dealership since my wife already has a Mazda CX-5. In the past we had a TDI Sportswagen and I was curious about what the new ones felt like. I liked it but really wanted a stick. Prior to that I was actually leaning toward a Ford Fusion Hybrid before to going to the dealership. When I mentioned that I was interested in something with a stick the dealer's eyes lit up and he pointed me in the direction of the GLI. Since it is late October and the only GLIs left were manual versions they were interested in selling the car and I got a good deal on the car. I am thoroughly enjoying the car.

Excellent video! I love Jettas and prefer it over the Golf simply because I kinda hate hatchbacks. The only thing about VWs that continue to slightly disappoint me is the intrusive bows on the inside of the trunk lid versus the multi-link (don't know what else to call it) setup on the Mk 5s. I had a Mk 5 Wolfsburg Edition Jetta and I never had to worry about really packing the trunk. Small gripe, I know, but the few times I really needed the space, it was there. Pack it and close it. Currently, I have a 2011 Accord V6 manual coupe and I love it. Except for the few times I had to rearrange the comments of the trunk because it has the same bows I mentioned earlier. Everything still fit, I just had to deal with the minor hassle of finagling the cargo. That said, I'd still buy one in a heartbeat! Great job, keep up the good work!

Disagree with the car being a better bargain than the Si because of hp ratings. Cars are more than just acceleration. I think the gli is a nice ride tho. Seating position is too high and it is heavier and not as sharp handling and dynamically enjoyable as the si. So even though it has more power I'd still go with the slightly slower but better driving Si. That's just my opinion, thanks for the review.

Sure it had 40HP and 50FPTQ less, but they were so reliable and just sounded SO MUCH BETTER. it had 342,000 miles, ran like a clock, barely burned any oil, the rest of the maintenance I did myself. It’s still be running but a POS trucker ran me into a guard rail off the interstate. Let me say, the Mk5s were built like tanks and I owe my life to it. Mk6 and up have become less safe and more fragile.

Tires, the kinda horrible Hancook all season tires that come on them stock are the main limiting factor for this car's performance. In fact if you look up the print periodicals review of the GLI from last summer one of them, forgot if it was C&D or R&T, they got their manual tester with the optional Hancook 320 treadwear summer tires to post a quicker time than the Golf Rabbit they tested. It was 0 to 60 in about 5.5 and the quarter mile in about 14.2 so pretty impressive for a value priced performance sedan. Pretty sure their tester was the 6 speed manual as well. I have had my Pure Grey 35th Anniversary edition for a little over 8 months with just under 14000 miles she has been amazing. However I did go with aftermarket 8 inch wide wheels wearing wider summer tires and it makes all the difference and very worth the upgrade. Oh and totally agreed on the overly quiet exhaust sound. I did modified mine for better sound byu deleting the mufflers and the resonator and installing a single glasspack instead. Also reprogrammed the ECU to turn off the sound speaker. Also agree with you about the Jetta GLI-R or Jetta-R as that would be amazing but sadly VW will never do it as it would be too performance competitive with the Audi A3 / S3 sadly. I wish they would and I do have fantasies about modifying mine with Golf R components and the Quattro AWD system. Just an excellent performance car for a great price and best in class interior. Highly recommended!

I like the GLI Autobahn. The only thing besides the cheap looking interior that I do not like is that there are no front & rear parking sensors on the GLI Autobahn. I live in NYC and the parking situation is critical. I sometimes have to squeeze into small parking spaces and I would hate to ding up the awesome bumpers. I also, have a parking/ bumper guard that I keep in my trunk while I drive and after I park I put down so that others don't scuff up my bumpers. I think VW needs to offer parking sensors on the upper trim GLI's and I don't mind paying extra for them either.

Near the end of the video I believe he mentioned 5.8 seconds or something but I didn't get to listen to the details on that. I'm basing 6.2 to 5.5 for a about a difference of a grand in price.

I’ve seen one of these at a local dealer, but I think in black, not red. It’s a great looking car, but the GTI is still a better looking car. Also, I think you have to spend a few thousand more to get a similarly equipped WRX as this GLI.

I almost bought this new 2019 Jetta GLI, I just hated the "premium" audio system that actually sounds like a tin can. "Beats"? It does not even have decent bass. I have no idea who designed that POS system. It is hard to upgrade to aftermarket deck, since VW now integrates a lot of their electronics into their stereo. If you don't care about audio quality this car is great. Manual transmission is also very smooth.

It is going to be worth the wait for the Gen 8 GTI to arrive in the US, but I'm sure VW will use the new engine in the 2021 GLI as well. It will probably be a mild hybrid to improve gas mileage.

What's a bit frustrating for me in this price range is the 0-60 time hasn't really changed much in 15 years. Still driving an '05 Ion Redline and none of these cars with exception of the WRX are faster. Whether the Civic SI, Focus ST, Velostar Spec whatever, the Soul X whatever, they all plod to 60mph in the 6's. Unless desiring creature comforts there hasn't been a reason to upgrade. When the time comes I'll probably get the WRX and call it a day.
