Күн бұрын

I've been paying Red Dead Redemption 2 for a few weeks, and no need to say that I love the game. So it was just a matter of time before I try and make something inspired by the game. This week, I decided to finally get to it and make Arthur Morgan's hat.
I used 2.4mm/6oz vegetable tanned leather, dyed it black with alcohol based leather dye and applied two coats of neatsfoot oil . I really like how it turned out, and I hope you'll like the build.
If you have any question, leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them all. Till next week, keep making and thanks for watching!

Would the leather hat hold the shape in the rain?

It depends on how long it stays under the rain, how hard it rains, etc... The most important thing is to shape it and let it dry fully and it should be good.

Did you use 8-10 ounce leather and how do i go about measuring my head so that it fits comfortable?
@RedSmithWorkshop
@RedSmithWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
I used 5-6oz veg tan leather. I found it to give the best results for a hat. If you measure it around your head, just above the eyebrows, it should fit perfectly.

Great work man, i am trying to do one for myself and you are the only person that i found that does it with pure leather inside the hat and outside. What type of leather is this?
@RedSmithWorkshop

Thanks Marcos. I used 2.3mm thick vegetable tanned leather. Easy to find and perfect for this kind of project. Thanks for watching

I have some tanned leather that is already the correct color for the hat. However, the leather is very soft and flimsy. Is there any way that I can stiffen it so that the color and texture will not be ruined? I do not have a whole lot of experience with leather btw
@RedSmithWorkshop
@RedSmithWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
You could glue a second layer underneath to make it stronger or just apply leather hardener. I used it a couple of times and it works very well.
@eggyboi1217
@eggyboi1217 4 жыл бұрын
For those who may be wondering, this is likely 2mm vegetable tanned leather. If you try to use other types of leather, wetting it wont make it hold it's shape the same way it does for vegetable tanned leather.
@RedSmithWorkshop
@RedSmithWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
2.5mm, but yes, you are correct. Chrome tanned leather wouldn't work for that. Thanks for watching

Absolutely beautiful! You make it look so easy to build. One question: How did you determine what size to make the hat?
@RedSmithWorkshop
@RedSmithWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Donna. It's not that hard. Making the pattern is :) The inner diameter of the rim is more or less the size of the hat. It depends on how you sew the rim to it.

Why did you die it after assembly?
@RedSmithWorkshop
@RedSmithWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Because leather shrinks when it's drying from water or dye, so the keep the alignement of the holes for sewing, it's better, for big pieces like this one, to dye it when the assembly is done. Thanks for watching
