For historical perspective, the Japanese invasion was the first conflict in WW2, taking most of North East China and moving down south. Because Fo Shan is the Southern most part of China, they had already known about Japanese atrocities, such as the Nanking massacre, which occurred about a year before events depicted in Ip Man. If you guys are interested in watching more on this period, there are a few that I'd recommend. "Devils on the Doorstep" is an amazing dark comedy about the Japanese occupation and how it affects a village of simple peasants. "The Eight Hundred" depicts true events of a group of a few hundred men (800 was an exaggerated number) defending a warehouse in Shanghai during the most destructive battle in China and it is an amazing war movie. Finally there's "City of Life and Death", which is harrowing tale depicting the "Rape of Nanking", shot in B&W in the style of Schindlers List and is an unflinching look at one of the darkest moments of WW2.

The movie actually takes some creative liberties and is a bit propaganda as Ip Man never fought the Japanese during that time. The reason he left Foshan for Hong Kong was he was a member of the Kuomitang (Chinese nationalist party) during the Japanese-Sino war which where poliical rivals to the Chinese Communist party that won. China being in the state its in. They of course couldnt depict the CCP as the bad guys and swap them for the Japanese instead.

I always love the "Traitor" character 9 times out 10 theyre filling a position that if it didnt exist in the first place would make life much worse in general. He's literally the only communication bridge between Japanese and Chinese language. He's also doing a job he hates but pretends loyalty to japan to not also be punished. He was loyal to china to the very end but *his family* needed him more than his nationality, He always did the right thing. Also the general had honor worthy of respect, he would've let lin live if he didnt spit blood in his face.

Right? The dude really is just translating. He's not lying to the Chinese people, he's translating what the Japanese are offering. They choose to go fight for rice themselves, knowing full-well that entering duels have a risk of injury or maybe even death. The only times he's deviating from actual translations are to either hide the "disrespect" Ip Man is showing in order to protect him, or when he's lying to the Japanese.

This is one of the greatest martial arts films ever made. While they did embellish some of the details, a lot of the film's plot was based on true events. Ip Man was a real person. He trained famous action star Bruce Lee in Wing Chun. Japan did invade and occupy parts of China and were absolutely brutal to the local Chinese people. Definitely check out the rest of the movies in the series Ip Man 2, 3, and 4 if you like this film. They're all really good, even though they get more and more fantastical/less based on true events, and Donnie Yen is fantastic in all of them.

For a bit of historical content, this movie starts in 1935 and goes until 1938. The movie plays during the Second Sino-Japanese War that started in 1937, so yes two years before ww2. Now what I feel like is often overlooked in history lessons especially talking about ww2, are The horrific acts that are committed by the Japanese army in occupied territories. The sacking of the then capital Nanking is literally known as the ”Rape of Nanking“. Chinese casualties made up about 1/3 of overall deaths in the war, something that i feel is often overlooked

To answer your question, the history is very real. The Japanese murdered around 6,000,000 people. My grandmother came from a good family and remembers the day the Japanese occupied their home. A servant saved her life by ushering her out of the house while the Japanese were searching. The family subsequently fled to the U.K.

Donnie Yen name is stapled to martial arts movie. So every director wants him to represent a Chinese aspect making him wearing traditional chinese clothing. He also speaks about how Chinene people in Hollywood used to be name Shang or Chang in every movie. That's why in John Wick 4 he dressed like a boss and not named "Shang" or "Chang".

31:07 If you look back closely at the start of the scene, Ip Man did show them how to defend themselves. The only problem is the fact that most of them had very little actual fighting/combat experience. Notice how they showed a few seconds after he blocked the first strikes but he wasn't used to it and actually shuddered from the pain in his arms. The mill workers did put up a good defensive fight but over course, they're overpowered considering they're fighting against skilled martial artists. Ip Man stepping in to defend them and take over the battle was essentially him stopping anyone else from suffering more severe injuries. This fight showcases a lot of the differences in skills and experience.

23:55 This scene is terrifying awesome and really powerful. Throughout the entirety of the movie so far we've seen Ip Man fight in a mostly passive way. Using his opponents energy against them and fighting to win with the minimum of force applied in return. A very controlled and disciplined martial artist. This scene is the first time we see him fighting to hurt his opponents, to actually inflict damage and beat them up. The way its portrayed in the choreography of the fight is what makes this movie a cut above others in my opinion. Not only is there a story, but the fighting style is even used to portray the characters emotion. Amazing, yet terrifying. You can feel how angry he is.

As funny as it may sound, these movies were my childhood. My dad and I were really into kung fu and martial arts movies and watched them all the time. He introduced me to a lot of these movies. I sorta have a clear memory of watching the second IP Man with him. Martial arts and horror movies were our thing, still kinda is. After this series, you should really check out the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy. Those movies have great sword fights and even greater story telling

As for old school martial arts movies with no choreography, just real martial artists fighting with a variety of weaponry, I'd recommend 'Shaolin Temple' - Jet Li's first movie. Of course, if you go on a Jet Li binge, then 'Fist of Legend' (the remake of Bruce Lee's) is also fantastic.

I realized upon rewatching this movie through this reaction that the Northern characters are likely refugees fleeing the Japanese occupation (which makes that comment about not wanting to go hungry make a lot of sense). While the historical embellishments are slightly irritating, they exist to create a compelling narrative about resisting oppression and contributing to the community in times of hardship. The fight scenes are amazing, and I find the General to be an engaging antagonist that forms a nice contrast to his sadistic right hand man.

The funny thing about kung fu movies that are done this well in China is....THEY DONT USE STUNTMEN! Or usually don't except for certain scenes. But they inflict half-serious blows on each other so the impacts are real. The fact that there is dust clouds/explosions from people hitting/parrying each other is a testament to this in certain wushu/kung fu drama shows.

I'm actually really glad this movie brought a lot of attention to the true theatre of war in the East rather than what is commonly known in America as the "Pacific Front". For the story of Ip Man, they've generally got him correct in the first act. He was a respected Kung Fu master in Foshan. His family was well to do, and they actually worked in law enforcement. Of course, he never fought a dojo full of Japanese, nor beat down a Japanese general during the height of the Sino-Japanese War. He fled communism for Hong Kong after the war, probably because of political leanings. Ip Man's son depicted in this movie, Ip Chun, is actually still alive and teaching Wing Chun in Hong Kong today. He has appeared in a different Ip Man spin off movie, playing the part of his martial grand-uncle. He personally tutored Donnie Yen on the mannerism and fighting style of his father. The little quirks in Ip Man's movements, like how his lead hand would bob up and down slightly, or how he crosses his leg when sitting and smoking a cigarette, was all taught to Donnie Yen on how to act like the historical, real Ip Man. Now, the kind of bleakness and suffering depicted by the movie, is absolutely accurate, though reality is way darker. What the Japanese inflicted not just on China, but also Korea and South East Asia was an absolute horror show. The things they did to the civilian population of occupied territories would put anything on the dark web to shame. They raped, murdered and pillaged to such an extreme degree, entire towns were left depopulated of the adult male population, and whoever was left would wish they didn't survive. Women, Children and Elderly were subject to the most depraved abuse, while the heads of the men would be piled up on display in the town center. Even Buddhist monks and nuns were not spared. The stories I've been told by my great grandparents and grandparents were only the tip of the iceberg, and the more publicly available English Language articles and sources on the subject frequently cannot bring themselves to describe the tortures inflicted on the people. The Imperial Japanese occupation made what the Nazis did in Europe look like Disneyland. Fair warning, if you go out and do your research what happened in Asia during the 2nd World War, you'll probably need therapy for a while.

OK BIG transation error here, one of the lines that Ip Man's kid on the bicycle who interrupted his fight with the guy challenging him from outside Fo Shan is suppose to mean "Momy said if you don't start fighting and take things a bit more seriously, all the things in the house will be broken" this line is extremely important, as it hints that Ip Mam was just observing his moves and wasn't really going all out, he was holding back and the wife ain't happy about that, shows the power level Ip Man is at

If I could relive a feeling of watching a movie just one time, I'd pick this movie. It is absolutely brilliantly done. It was the first time a movie made me hop off the couch in amazement and excitement. That 10-man fight was 💋🤌 perfectly executed.

if the ipman film came out when you were in high school, then it was released when i was in kindergarten and when i was in elementary school i watched it and the film was very viral.. even i still remember until now watching that film together it was very exciting and nostalgic

This movie takes place during the 2nd war involving Japan and China (1937-1945). Another info : the one who plays the japanese general, he's Ikeuchi Hiroyuki, the actor who used to be Murai into the first GTO TV Series (1998). This story is almost entirely true. According to Ip Chun and Ip Ching, Ip Man's sons, every named character is real. Still according to them, there are only historical facts. This is why there are time ellipsis during the movie : this Ip Man 1 movie story has been told them directly by their father.

This film did a lot when it came out for martial artists and enthusiasts. Another good martial arts film that's set during WWII is "fighter in the wind" - based mostly on the many conflicts between Korea and Japan, and the Korean founder of a "Japanese" Karate style.
