The saddest part about Gi-Hun's mom dying is that she probably died thinking the worst of him because he wasn't there. That's what really made me sad during that scene. She didn't get to see how he's changed.

As a parent I have thought a lot about his decision to not get on the plane to see his daughter. Like you said, "He is alive but broken." The extreme PTSD that he would necessarily carry for the rest of his days would not lend itself to healthy parenting. A lot of people are saying the ending doesn't work but I completely disagree. Considering what Gi hun has gone through it completely makes sense he wouldn't be able to move on. Knowing these games are about to start again how could you just happily go to the US without trying to do something about it? The metaphor for classism throughout this show was amazing, but one thing that impressed me was how each game was a neat metaphor for classism as well. Red Light Green Light showed how the higher class dictated the movements of the lower class, the honeycomb game was the importance of skills to move forward in life, the tug-of war was how the lower classis pitted against itself, etc. This show is brilliantly written.

my Korean teacher said that kids actually played squid game a lot and especially boys, and it was quite a violent game indeed she said that kids would return home with their t shirts ripped, cuz they would grab each other super hard, so the squid game in the show might be a little underwhelming in terms of being as grandiose as the other games, but it is quite an accurate and faithful representation of the real game Korean kids used to play (or still play, Idk)

So glad y’all didn’t get spoiled and had the benefit of the surprise at the end. I think you’ll like Heavy Spoilers’ Easter egg video. As to whether the final game was satisfying…yes, but not like the other games. To me, it was good because it was so different, how that scene was shot, and how that plays into the overall theme. Meaning, it was not flashy, it was a flat down and dirty fight to the death. No frills- just a street fight. Which…that’s really what the whole games were. But if you made that the first or second game, people probably wouldn’t have come back. People would not have been inured to the violence and less likely to go forward. Every step got more intimately violent, getting even the gentlest the players closer and closer to being willing to outright murder their competitors. Kind of like how life breaks you down, one step at a time, With ultimately no bells or whistles, just…a dirty street fight rat race. That is what I found fascinating.

If you rewatch the show there’s a lot of little hints that point to the old man not being a player like everyone else: - there’s no player 001 of the year we’re following when the cop checks the records - it looks like the girl from the first game didn’t actually register the old man with her eyes - when the old man gets up and starts yelling for people to stop killing each other, the frontman actually stops the fight - the old man knew all the games from his childhood and were pretty good at most of them - he genuinely seemed happy to be there and play the games - he pressed the x button to go home, even though he had a growing head tumor and was going to die anyways, and it seems like the reason he did it was because he wanted the players to be there “voluntarily”

This word from old man is an important topic that penetrates the series. "Do you still believe in human goodness?" The old man did not believe it until the moment he died. Old man and Sangwoo are characters with the same idea. Sang-woo was the smartest of 456 people, and from the honeycomb episode, he recognized his team members as competitors. He didn't trust anyone and it's actually realistic. He is not a psychopath who enjoys murder. Sang-woo felt guilty, so when choosing a triangle, he called Ki-hoon to hesitate, and trembled as he heard the shot to kill Ali. However, it is only more desperate in the death game. In fact, Sangwoo represents ordinary people. Sang-woo, who no one believed in, commits suicide against Ki Hoon's goodness at the last minute, showing his growth. Also, this is a repetition of the last game between Ki Hoon and Oldman over the survival of the homeless. Heroic victory of goodness. Ki-hoon was silly and frustrating, but it was touching.

The riot was the only time that 001 was truly afraid for his life. That is why his character changed so much in that scene, and why they came and saved him after he stood up and cried for help. He sort of broke character there and the frontman could tell he honestly was not happy with everyone just murdering each other outside of the games.

Such a great show full of metaphors. I love the ending scene in this regard. "Horse" in the horse race, as the Front man states Gi-hun, only goes in the direction which they are told to. Getting on the plane through the narrow, one-way airport corridor would be this direction. But Gi-Hun chooses to go the other way, claiming that he is not a horse, but a person. (It's just my personal thought, nothing official) Btw, the word "Horse" in Korean is "말(mal)", which is also the same for "Pawn" like in the chess games. So maybe the author of the show thought this through also? Especially when you think that this show starts literally GI-hun gambling on the horce racing.
@joaniewwh35023 жыл бұрын
wow... i finally found someone who also thinks sangwoo stabbing himself instead of gihun is some sort of redemption. the old man wasn't chained to the rope during tug of war... it's crazy how we didn't notice during the first watch... as for gihun, it's very much established that gihun will always go to where he feels he's more needed - to help. it didn't matter if it was reckless or irresponsible. can't wait for season 2.

Sangwoo didn't wanted to return back home because once he gets out he will go to jail.. so and he don't want that his mother sees him like that. Basically he killed himself that Gi-hun could win and take care of their families. Because if someone else might be in the finale with Gi-hun then the person might kill him and not let him win, you know? But since Sangwoo lost everything he killed himself so that Gi-hun don't have to hurt anyone else or get hurt by himself and win the game. I do like Sangwoo because in Episode 2 he already wanted to kill himself back in the bathroom, he might be a "villain" in someone eyes but also we have to see his point of view.Everything what he did is wrong, killing Ali and Saebyeok .. but Gi-hun might get backstabbed by someone.

I had the same problem you guys did regarding him not seeing his daughter at the end. But after sitting on it, I feel it was the right choice. In the beginning, the choices he made that took him away from his daughter were selfish. Yeah he got to see her, but everything leading up to that was an overture of selfishness that ruined their time together. Where as here, the reason that is standing in the way of them seeing each other is the right one. For Gi-hun, what if he took the plane to visit his daughter, was never able to find the Game again and 20 years from now, his daughter is in the same position. Or anyone else's family for that matter as a new Game is starting right now. While yes, it is heartbreaking that he doesn't get to see his daughter. He is making the unselfish choice to put an end to the games so no one else is hurt by it.

NEW THEORY: Why are people so sure that Il-Nam is actually dead? He seemed to have died at exactly 12am which seems a bit too fitting. But here's the main clue which nobody has noticed yet: on the patient monitor, if you look at the top right of the screen it says "SENSOR OFF" and "LEAD OFF". Either the cables may have never been connected to Il-Nam or that he removed it while Gi-Hun 'won' the game as he was looking away. Have a look yourself. After all, his original 'death' was staged by Gi-Hun and all of us looking away. There is a precedence of foreshadowing already with how each player died according to an incident in their real life. Why can't this principle of foreshadowing apply again? That is, he staged his death twice. Why are we so confident we are not being fooled again if practically all of us missed it the first time? Il-Nam may have staged it for both Gi-Hun and the Frontman who arrives after Gi-Hun and closes his eyes. But perhaps Il-Nam played them both and staged it because that would mean in the next season both of them will clash but both of them think Il-Nam is dead which means they feel they can assert control over the game. Only for Il-Nam to reassert himself later in the series and declare that he was okay the whole time and that there is a greater game going on involving the two of them.
