I have two first generation black max reels with the black spool tension knobs. I used it to target musky so after many years the drag discs are shot but it’s a perfect reel for the work vehicle. I don’t need a working drag, I just use my thumb.

Great comparison between old and new. I primarily fish round reels from Abu, Daiwa, & Shimano just because that's what I grew up on. Many years ago I bought a Black Max combo because I needed a beater rod/stick to let friends use and not be too concerned about. To this day I still own it and fish it hard in fresh and salt water. Looking into a Max Pro to maybe do a BFS conversion. Thanks for posting!

It was my second baitcaster, first was a lews smash combo. I got one of the black max combos with the 6 6 abu rod and after my first day fishing with it I instantly went back and bought another for 60 bucks. I got two Black Max rod/reel combo's for the same price as my one Lews Smash combo. The Smash is now my permanent frog rod......I rarely use a frog.

As a newbie, just bought the BMax3L last night. This morning made 20 consecutive casts (est.20mtrs every cast) without backlash. A personal record 😀. I have to say Abu Garcia BMax is really value for money. Will definitely enjoy BCing with it for days to come. Perhaps my nxt BC reel will be the Revo series 😋😘

I have a 13 fishing Origin and an Abu Garcia Black Max. I know im a poor. But the Origin is about $60 bucks give or take 5 dollars in my area. While the Black Max was $46 at my local Walmart. The Black Max is far above my Origin. The Origin honestly doesn’t feel as smooth and on one trip I had to stop using it because it was so gritty feeling, it almost felt like it was skipping gears. I did a cleaning on it but it has never felt like new again. My Black Max has never had anything like that happen. I have to say the Black Max isnt just a good budget reel its a good reel.

Have a very early gen (maybe 1st gen) Silvermax I grabbed from Gander Mtn as a combo. Rod is gone, but that good ole reel still goes strong! Not smooth and not nice but held firm.

Ohhhh! After watching this I just realized I did not buy the max x ! I just saw black max with big orange handles, grabbed it! Thought I was getting a deal at Walmart $45 bucks, but it’s still the old max with a new handle! Oh well…. I also just received the Kastking Legend GT, and the Pisifun phantom, both with higher specs, although the black max still feels like a professional working tool. The legend and phantom aren’t bad, very pretty. The overall consensus in my garage of everyone who picks up these 3 reels is that the black max feels more like a quality reel, dam near close to the Revo!

The black max was good for the price point. Let's see if the Max X I got one for Christmas. Only took it out 5 times only but I'm happy with it. My ugly stick Ugly Tuff reel has the same red handle grips. Save money 🤑 ha. ABU Garcia

If you look at the image at 16:20, its a black max. It also has the black lines on the spool as well as the same red pull bar for the side plate. The knobs are also different. Is your black max a gen 3? I have the gen 2, and im just wondering if they made a gen 4 as well

Learned how to use a baitcaster with a black max, it's my dad's reel now. With the right adjustments throwing 1/8th ounce lures on it was no problem. Now I have the blue max combo from Walmart, and might have to look into getting a Max X at some point.

I bought a curado dc for my kids they lost interest I inherited them, that started the whole thing with shimano. I’m pretty impressed with them and a bit embarrassed on how much I’ve spent over the years on that brand. But it works for me

@@ssmart5701 They don't sell Lews stuff over here in Malaysia so I've never gotten to try them out. But the tradeoff is that we have a Southeast Asian Domestic Market, so we get some cool stuff people rarely talk about like the Daiwa 18 Ardito 100 HSL LTD and Daiwa Garuda reels that have colour shifting paint (the first reel I own, it's amazing with hybrid ceramics), and we get JDM stuff just in the stores. But yeah my first reel ever was a Shimano Sahara spinning reel. My latest purchase was the Curado MGL. That Sahara is still in service after 7-8 years.
