SHIMANO CHRONARCH MGL VS CHRONARCH CI4 part 1: hands on table top review

Reviewing the differences between the Chronarch MGL versus the Chronarch CI4 before taking them out to the field and the water.

I have both, and to be honest the newer version is better. Not saying the old version is tho. But the new version is just a tad smoother on retrieval, but the new version while casting is more silent. The old version does have more braking, the new version has a much smoother braking. They look exactly alike, other than the colors of course. They both hold the same amount of line. I like both cant say i like one more over the other. I use 12# seaguer invizx on both reels, i havent changed any bearings all stock, they are both a pleasure to fish with.

Everything you said was pretty much spot on. The old model was a great reel, the new one is just a little better at everything

I'm thinking about getting the MGL. How does it palm? I can't find any information online but I heard it's the same body size as the curado 50e. Is that true?

no its bigger, it palms like the Ci4 and similiar to Metaniums

Do they palm exactly the same? I'm considering replace my Curado 201 by this MGL to have a better palm feel...I have a Curado 71 and love the sensation specially in the hand side plate (really narrow) thanks

The Chronarch MGL XG having the 96mm handle...is that Shimano’s longest low-profile baitcasting handle? I want to change mine out on my Bantam MGL but don’t want to go aftermarket. Any idea how long the Curado K handles are?

If you want a longer genuine Shimano handle you have to go JDM. Check out the Engetsu video I did. that reel has a 102mm handle if I remember

Hey guy, I really need your advise ... I’m torn between several reels you have knowledge of. Shimano 200k, Shimano Chronarsh MGL , Lews Pro G and the Concept Z. My question, for freshwater and inshore saltwater app, which of these reels would you recommend. Thx Manny

take the MGL out of the picture because the MGL spool isnt saltwater friendly. Ive never used the Pro G but Id take the K over the Z because its way smoother and more powerful.

THE REEL TEST thx, how about the Chronarch 150HG (saltwater) ? The specs are the same as the MGL but with a different spool ? Or would you still take the 200k ....

If you are talking about the Chronarch G then its made for saltwater inshore fishing. One costs like 100 more, and lighter, and one has an aluminum frame and hold a little more line.. I think the casting should be pretty similiar. you will have to decide whats more important

Good video. Shimano added a bearing on the driveshaft next to the roller bearing on the Metanium MgL model vs the 13 Metanium. I'm guessing they did the same thing with the Chronarch MgL vs Ci4+

Silent tune correct? It actually doesn't have an extra, just different location. At least this is how it looked on schematic to me. They still have: 2 supporting pinion, 2 supporting spool. X-ship reels seem to always have 4 bearings on the spool/pinion together. Same as all Daiwa's with free floating spools because it is necessary pretty much for that design.

not all Daiwa free floating spools have a 2 bearing pinion :) Also theres no silent tune bearing on the Chronarch MGL spool. Im going to take Tony Chas word for it :)

Daniel Dean Correct. Silent Tune moves the spool bearing from the sideplate onto the spool shaft with a spring support. On the driveshaft there is an extra bearing if you compare the schematics of the 13 Metanium to the Metanium MgL. I've noticed that Shimano has recently started to add this bearing to their upper end low profile reels starting in 2016 with the Metanium MgL (The 14/15 Calcutta Conquest has this bearing). So the driveshaft now has 2 bearings + roller bearing support. Daiwa has the 2 bearing + roller on the driveshaft for quite some time now. It's great to see that Shimano is finally following suit. Again, I do not have the schematics for the Chronarch MgL as Shimano has not posted it online yet, so I cannot confirm it. But if my suspicion is correct, there should be another bearing on the driveshaft.

Please name me one that doesn't have a 2 bearing pinion w/ a free floating spool. I might have missed one somewhere or from the past. I am just assuming the recent crop... Do you know an example of one? I always thought Abu Garcia's had dual support because the make an "Infini Spool", but they support it via bearing. So again which Daiwa's do NOT?

So there is enough change to justify to the public that there is perceivable benefit to lash out the $$$ for a new model. A lot of these new reels are becoming a joke.

Im sure if I fished the MGL as long as Ive fished the Ci4 and loosen it up it would cast farther. if you are on a budget switching out to the new MGL may not make sense but if you like the latest thing Id say it was worth it.
