That's a really dangerous way to take blades out of scabbards. It's much safer if we keep don't wrap our fingers around the side with the sharpened edge of the blade. Even though the scabbards may be made out of metal, they do wear through. Lofty Wiseman warned about it in his boo, The S.A.S. Survival Handbook. (He was the British S.A.S. survival instructor for a couple of decades.)
