Most of the people spend 5 minutes giving an update on their lives, another 5 minutes giving an explanation of the issue they had with electricity and then 30 minutes on how to DIY...😒 Thank you so much for being concisely, at the point! Very much appreciated!

A black burn mark on an outlet doesn't always mean that the outlet needs replacing. Sometimes, a high-wattage (amperage) appliance (coffee maker, heater, toaster, air conditioner) was unplugged with the switch on and it sparked while it was unplugged. Another explanation is that a heavy inductive load (motorized appliance, vacuum cleaner, washing machine) was unplugged with the switch on. Motorized appliances produce a big spark when unplugged because an inductor opposes change in current. Just clean off that outlet with steel wool followed by a buffing with a dry cloth.

I suppose you could test the wires with anything that can let you know that the current is off at the outlet. At the time the 2-prong tester was what I had. But recently bought a no contact voltage detector for these type of electrical projects.

Something important to remember: black wires (on the right) will typically wrap around under the screw first then over the top, so that when you tighten the screw clockwise, it tightens the wire more instead of loosening it. For the white and ground wires on the left, wires wrap over the screw then under because again screw tightens clockwise.

Thanks for the additional information. There have been several comments about the wiring. I just place it back the way I found it. And this wiring was done by the home builder. I know this video is old but the instructions could be improved. Even simple stuff like ensuring that the wires are going in a clockwise direction etc there is also too much exposed wire. You should use the gauge that’s on the back of the outlets to ensure the proper length of wire for your shepherds hook.

Receptacles burn out mostly because they arc due to failing blade retention, which in turn results from heavy usage. So, replace with a commercial-grade unit that has more durable and positive blade retention. For a few dollars more, they'll last much longer, plus their back wire feature makes them easier and quicker to replace because you can avoid the entire finicky j-hook routine. Also, if the exposed wires are so long that they go past the receptacle, trim them back a little to reduce the risk of a short. This is especially important if the box is metal.

I spotted a few mistakes Mistake 1: You did not tighten the unused screw terminals! Mistake 2: You did not attach Ground, Neutral then Hot Mistake 3: You did not use a #1 Robertson screwdriver/bit Mistake 4: You didn't use an outlet tester. You are supposed to use an outlet tester (e.g. Fluke ST120+) to make sure outlets are working correctly Mistake 5: The outlet is not level! Mistake 6: There was too much insulation off the wire!

This was so nice and easy to understand. you even explained any difficulties a person might run into during this and how to overcome them. Thank you so much! I'm in the process of buying my first home and a lot of my outlets in one particular room need a "facelift" with cracked face plates. Edit: even when it was something that you'd already done before you still explained and showed yourself doing that. That's so hard to come by in instructional videos. They'll say, "oh it's the same as the ones before." then cut to the next part and suddenly you're noticing something else in the background or another detail seems different and you're worried you might have missed something. this is awesome!

Saw in another video that any screws not being used are tightened to avoid contact with the metal box. Another point, that the ground opening on the socket should always be closest to the floor so if via gravity the plug loosens the ground connection is maintained till the plug falls out.This was the way he did it , but it needs reminding. The last time I had a receptacle turn black was a failed appliance plug, but certainly worthwhile testing and inspecting the wiring Also it seemed like he was changing a Kitchen outlet and here in Canada the top and bottom section of the socket in most kitchen outlets are separately wired with a 220 V lead 120 to top and 120 to bottom each outlet good for 15A You have to break and twist off the copper interconnection on the receptacle on the feed or hot side. The smaller slot on the front of the receptacle is the hot side. You'll notice that the two breakers for kitchen outlets are linked and move together. I'm not a professional, just an electronics,electrical, computer hobbyist.

It’s possible that all the outlets in your room are on GFCI circuit. Look for an outlet nearby that has a reset button on it and see if it needs to be reset. The other thing which I think might be the real problem is that when your outlet burned out, it tripped the breaker switch for your room. Check the breaker panel to see if the breaker switch for your room got tripped. You could flip the switch back on and you should get power back on in your room. That burnt outlet will need to be replaced. Hope this points you in the right direction!

Use 15’s throughout
@surferdude642
@surferdude642 3 жыл бұрын
20 amp receptacles will not cause complications. Use 15 amp "spec grade" receptacles. Never use 20 amp duplex receptacles because you'll never need them and they offer no advantage. If you're concerned about overloading it's the wire gauge, circuit breaker and the number of receptacles on that circuit that are important, not the receptacle. Another thing is that 20 amp receptacles can only be used on 20 amp circuits, but 15 amp duplex receptacles can be used on 15 or 20 amp circuits.

When 2 pairs of wires, it is important to make those terminal screws very tight, the entire load of the circuit is reliant on those screws to carry the power to the rest of the line. Restrip the wire for a new clean fresh connection. The old one dented the copper and weakened the connections, so starting fresh is better. Theese videos are kind of dangerous......many important facts missed. Dont reuse wire if damaged or burned or weakened.

Dear God🙏♥️💕 in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in the bible that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as my Lord. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved. Amen.

This may be a dumb question, but if there is still voltage on the burnt outlet, do you have to replace it? Is it just for cosmetic purposes, or if it's burned before, does that make it more susceptible in the future?
@TheRenderQ
@TheRenderQ 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not an electrician so I can’t be 100% sure. If the receptacle is still working it might be fine even if it looks burnt. The burnt marks were probably caused by sparking and to prevent damage the breaker could’ve tripped for safety. So in all likelihood the burnt receptacle is probably cosmetic. But the one I had was in a rental house so I had to change it. Hope this helps!

NITS TO PICK - 1.) Use a Needle Nose Pliers with INSULATED GRIPS. Yes, the power is off ...sort of.....maybe... but you still use standard safety practices and tools. 2.) Again, while the Power might be off, until your wife or child turns it back on without you knowing, I do not touch bare wire or screws. Yes with the Power Off it is safe, but it is also a bad habit to get into. 3.) Use proper tools of the Proper Size, that long screw driver is a prelude to it slipping and causing an accident. 4.) Use Insulated Tools and never let your skin touch any Metal part of the Tool. Yes the Power is off...for now... but this is a matter of Bad Habit vs Good Habits. 5.) Screw all the Screw down. Don't leave the unused one sticking out like you did. Again Bad Habits vs Good Habits. Handling any Electrical Wiring is like handling a Gun, even if you know it is safe, you treat it as if it is not. The Stakes are TOO HIGH to get into Bad Habits or to tolerate a mistake. *Overall though, very helpful.*

TheRenderQ, I just purchased a Leviton USB Charger/Tamper Resistant Outlet to replace a standard burned wall outlet like you're replacing in this video. However, the USB Charger has only the green ground on the bottom left side and two screws on the right side. The old outlet has two screws on the left and two screws on the right, plus the green ground screw. With two few screws on the left side of the charger how would I replace the new outlet in the place of the old outlet? Hopefully, you can answer me very quickly. Thank you, Willie.

Thanks, 15 here and with a bad outlet in the living room with a smell coming from it and a family that's too busy to do anything about it, I thought I could get it but overconfidence isn't something you want with stuff like this.. wanted to double check myself and this was just perfectly concise to do it without taking all day or getting a shocker. I won't go into it since it's already in nearly every comment but definitely important to remember the way the wires are supposed to hook, so it doesn't loosen when you tighten the screw, I think I remember that from a Technology Connections video. Gotta love that Alec.

OK so I have a question we have a barn in our in our barn we have a room well one of the plugs in the room it burnt out like that but none of the other plugs in the room work now could it be just because of that one plug or does it mean all the plugs are bad because there’s no power going to any of the plugs now but the breaker is not off it says it’s on
@TheRenderQ
@TheRenderQ 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a GFCI outlet in your room. Look at all the plugs in your room or area next to the room to see if you can an outlet with a reset button on it. Press the reset button and your outlets should work again. If you reset and the button pops out again then it’s possible the burnt outlet is causing more problems and it will need to be replaced. I’m not an electrician but I know the first thing I’d look for is a GFCI outlet and reset it. Hope this helps!

@TheRenderQ
@TheRenderQ 23 күн бұрын
An outlet that is sparking can cause a room to lose power only because it may have tripped the breaker switch for that room. If the breaker switch didn’t get tripped then it’s possible that it tripped a nearby GFCI outlet. Look for a tripped breaker or reset the GFCI switch.

@stevepettersen3283

A few pointers: test BOTH outlets for power before opening and handling. One of them could be a switched outlet that is powered independently from the other. 2. Too much bare wire is exposed from the loop. Ideally, the insulation should end just before the screw head. 3. On the old receptacle, you can totally remove the screws to make freeing the loops much easier. 4. For the new receptacle, if the loops don't go under the screws easily try slightly backing the screws out (don't remove) this may get you the clearance you need. 5. Any unused screws should be tightened down. 6. Make sure the black wire goes to the brass colored screw, white to the silver colored screw. Don't assume the person before you did it correctly.
