I still think there's an elephant in the room with regards to Foden and that's that this England side doesn't play risky passes, no risk, no reward. Foden likes to receive the ball in tight areas and make quick movements. I can only assume it's Southgate's instructions but even when Foden makes runs and creates space (which he did against Serbia) we often turn back and go for the safe 100% pass.

Serbia just pushed up and stopped giving the likes of Rice/TAA/Bellingham, those 4/5 touches to find a pass. If you actually watch Foden, and Saka is also class at it on the right, he doesn't pass and stand watching his pass. They pass and then immediately they're off running into space. Foden/Saka don't need 3 or 4 touches to find a pass and they dont just stand there watching the pass. Kane was just as guilty at times. England have near as dammit always sit back once they've scored first, is historical. This Platinum Generation of English players is particularly hard to watch, and as a Spaniard I can see many similar traits to the batch of players Spain had prior to us dominating the international game for the magical period. Spain's major problem was team harmony, gelling Real Madrid and Barcelona players who actually despised each other. Southgate, to his great credit, has made talented players who play high octane matches against each other week in week out in the EPL, some fiercer than others, and fashioned a camp that exudes friendship and team spirit without any internal tribalism from his players. Is a first step and has been hurdled very well. Unfortunately, you don't win tournaments by being a beautifully harmonious camp, tactics and putting the right players in their correct positions. Spain were never lucky and never did you see that team, witness especially in the WC final of 2010, panic ay any time. Indeed, at Euro 2012 they went beast mode and blitzed the tournament and arguably played the best football we have seen this century (so far) without a recognised striker. This tournament will be won by not conceding goals, even though we're seeing lots of them being scored, but neither England or Spain have the defensive players at their disposal right now to truly convince us of their credentials. And I can't see that Southgate will ever unshackle his talent fully. He won't let Rice lone hold the midfield (Rice is no Rodri, and is nowhere near Busquets), allowing his amazingly gifted forward players to express themselves to their fullest. Too pragmatic, and (I can't believe am typing this bit) without Maguire at the back (who's never been either a Puyol, a Pique and is nowhere near a Ramos but has been England's rock in defence when called upon) they will get exposed. England are not a team that wins by scoring more goals than the opposition, never showed that capacity in all my years shaking my head at their performances. In short...DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH, YOU WILL TURN BLUE (and feel it) AND EVENTUALLY GIVE UP!!!

Good morning Gents! I have not seen most of the Euros only the Germany game and I am someone who has a belief that you are only as good as how much the opposition allow you to be. Football is a game where you rely on getting into a rhythm and if the opposition take that away from the off you will struggle to get into one.

Bellingham can play deeper Foden can’t. Foden would scare the defence in the number 10. My concern is more around how poorly England played in general once the opposition took the initiative.

Love Alan, but I disagree with him about his thoughts that Kane should have stayed up the pitch. He was losing pretty much every duel when the ball was kicked long to him, it didn’t really work. Him dropping deeper was trying to improve our midfield who were poor in the 2nd half and losing the ball too often. It didn’t quite work still, but it made sense for him to do that at the time.

Southgate has done this EVERY single time against any half decent opposition. Croatia 2018, Italy 2021 immediately spring to mind. Cowardly, risk averse and gets punishment the vast majority of times. That he hasn't changed this (let alone improved his ability to make decent substitutions - be it personally or with a new addition to his team), is damning. Ten Hag is correct, and he's just doing his job as a pundit. Should we completely disregard your insight, tactically speaking, because none of you are successful managers? The fact that the discussion centred on him predominantly rather than the value of what he said doesn't paint you in a good light.

England have NEVER been able to cope with other teams closing them down. When the opposition presses, they panic and can't keep the ball and will eventually opt to kick it long in desperation. Maybe it's a reflection on the way the Premier league is played? This was the only real difference in the second half and coupled with a manager who is risk averse you have the outcome that we saw. Nothing surprising about it, I've seen this in every England team going back to the late 80s.

If you watch the other matches they all seem to play at a higher tempo and its entertaining, but with England it's all very slow, ball being kicked forward, backwards, backwards, backwards, across the back, and back again, no fluency, no movement and everything seems to go down the right side. Why can't we play at a quicker pace, more shots, more crosses, but instead it back and back, and like Southgate dull and boring.

The Serbs analysed the issue facing them, they adapted and imposed their plan. The issue I see is real experienced senior players would have worked out how the opposition has adapted and then they would have adapted and driven the team. We lacked balance on the left in that no left footed left back, also Foden and Bellingham along with Trippier all helped to make the left side redundant. If you look at the heat maps and pass maps of all three players and you will see how they are literally and remarkably the same! For me second half our defence dropped too deep too quickly leaving a big gap between defence and midfield and the front line failed to give the team an effective out ball stopping the defence/team to squeeze up to halfway and allow us to control the game in the Serbian half. The issue now is if Southgate doesn't learn and adapt can the players learn and adapt? Having said that it is vitally important to win the first game, now it is very important to learn and adapt to build momentum!

'We lack the spark', Shearer says having been a ring leader in the media doing all they can to try to have England's spark and most reliable tournament player, Raheem Sterling, removed from the team throughout his England career and now succeeded. What hypocrisy. Sterling not just being the spark and most reliable player, but also being this England team's highest assist provider and second highest goal scorer and so biggest threat to the opposition, and being the highest scoring winger in the history of the Premier League with at least 3 seasons of his career still to play, if you exclude penalties, was not enough for Shearer. This does not include the penalties he has won. For some reason he thought others who have achieved far less and those who have regularly showed up to tournaments and failed to produce their club form were the better options. Well here we are now with what he asked for. A performance by England that showed clearly we are missing that 'spark' and relentless threat that is Raheem Sterling that Shearer and the media worked so hard through endless attacks of negativity to influence the manager to remove as they did before the last Euros where the manager ignored them and the media was so embarrassed by the player they demanded be removed almost single handedly dragging England to their first final in over 50 years. The only time they took a brief break to say something positive about Sterling because they had to having done something that establishes him as an England legend in front with the whole nation watching, but this only held them back for a moment and the attacks of negativity continued in an attempt to brainwash fans, the England staff and the England manager into forgetting his outrageous quality, consistency and ability throughout his career and what they had achieved for him throughout his career. When have you ever heard of it being headline sports news that a player took a shot rather than passed the ball to a player in a better position to score, or that a player taking a free kick failed to score as if people are expected to score free kicks, but for Raheem Sterling, Shearer and the media think that is warranted driving fans into negative hysteria against him. This is all sad to see because this is our last best chance to win a tournament as Italy, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands look like they will be much stronger next time and our spark and most reliable player is not with us at the tournament, a shocking decision influenced and encouraged by the actions of the media. We should have to threats on either side giving teams nightmares in Sterling and Saka, but instead we have only Saka who is a threat, but not as threatening as the highest scoring winger in the history of the Premier League, excluding penalties. While Man City in Doku and Real Madrid in Junior win everything using players that are quite simply clones of Raheem Sterling, England leaves the original player of that kind and its outrageous threat as a weapon on the football pitch behind because of a media and Alan Shearer obsession running a decade to keep him away from the England shirt. Can you other teams leaving their spark and most reliable player behind; can you imagine France leaving Mbappe behind, Argentina leaving Messi behind, Croatia leaving Modric, Portugal leaving Ronaldo, who are their team's spark and most reliable players? It's such a disgrace and the media once again have caused it, just as they did in dismantling too early our team that beat Germany 5-1 in demanding the manager put the team last and bring in Rooney too early, when it could have waited to the next tournament. They are the ones losing us tournaments. Peace and love
