All this talk about the penalty at Bournemouth when the man who committed the foul, Lewis Cook, did not protest the award at all and was seen speaking to his teammate (Brooks) confirming that it was a foul. It was a great spot from the much-maligned Darren England and credit to him and to Lewis Cook for admirable sportsmanship and captaincy. Bournemouth are a class act on and off the pitch. Hope they break into the Top 4 or 5 or qualify for the other European competitions at the very least.

It was NOT a soft penalty. It was one of the clearest penalties this season because it was a trip in the box where the defender clipped the attacker, not the other way round. Disappointing for Bournemouth who played well, but 100% correct. The only surprise is that Darren England gave it, he being one of those who had a jaunt to the UAE before disallowing that Liverpool goal against Spurs last season. He must know he's already under the microscope for corruption and actually made a correct decision.

I don't understand how you don't want things like that to be given as penalties? He clearly clips Gakpo and trips him in the penalty area. You can see it in the video from behind it. Gakpo is through on goal if he isn't clipped, so what do you want? Deny Liverpool a goalscoring opportunity in a Premier League game because it's unfair to punish an opposition player for their clumsiness? Are trips like that to be allowed because it was an accident? Maybe players shouldn't be so clumsy? HE didn't even complain! Honestly, at some point pundits like you guys need to take some accountability for the state of VAR, because you're *never* happy either way.

This reminds me of Lingard's "downfall", although he looks happy where he is right now and that's good to see. I don't think English players who come from English academies rate leagues outside the Premier League and that's their own loss. I'd call Haaland one of the big issues with City. They no longer have striker who drops back into midfield to help rotate and recycle the ball. This is something they had with Aguero, Jesus and with Alvarez. They no longer have that option and that means that a team that wants to overload and snuff out the opposition has to do it with 9 outfield players instead of with 10 with Haalands primary role being ensuring that defense drops deeper, something that City do not need a specific player to do.

Haaland isn't the issue. Its Pep and the way he specifically instructs him. At Borussia Dortmund and RB Salzburg Haaland he would drop back to help the midfield a lot more often and. Pep quite clearly doesn't want him to nor does he even allow him to use size and natural physicality against opposition defenders.
@jbaker74393 күн бұрын
Haaland is what he is. I’m not so sure he should be burning himself out trying to do midfield things. He’s 24 and wants to have a long career. They lost the best player in the world. Until they get that area of the team fixed they are gonna have pressure on their defense which it just seems like their defense is not top level. Walker got older and slower. And perhaps how dominant they were with possession and scoring kept these defensive problems from being revealed. Pep can get that turned around. I’m not sure he should change up his formula until it’s clear whether Rodri can get back to at least a good level.

The problem with the modern game, as Al, highlighted, is all teams want to play tika taka football because it’s fashionable and almost pass it into the goal. Look at Newcastle with Murphy and Isak. Isak says he doesn’t score many headers. That’s because until Murphy came in the crosses were none existent. The 9 game streak we went on was in part because we started putting more crosses in. Opposition if they stay tight and a winger cuts inside or passes inside they’re running into a lot of bodies. Bypass those bodies, catch defenders a yard out of position by putting a cross in. Newcastle high press is great but as is shows is not sustainable, so let the ball do the work. Pass with pace and conviction then put a sprint in. Overload using your wing backs and recruit players, who have a premier league level left and right foot. It opens up doubt in opposition because they they know you can play wing play with crosses, early crosses, cut inside and passes through if needed and adapt as the opposition and game dictates. I feel these days all teams try to copy 1 style of play. Look at Schar against Bournemouth and Fulham. As soon as long diagonal balls came, he looked lost because they’re coached to short sharp passes and when someone does something different, modern defenders don’t know how to adapt.

That was always a penalty, maybe except for maybe the traditional kick and rush English period. Any decent striker makes sure he is in front of the defender, and then the defender has to make sure there is no touch. Gakpo also did not slow down to make Cook touch him, so this one is 100% on the defender. Also, if he does not touch him he is through on goal with a huge opportunity of scoring, so the impact makes this not a soft penalty. Plenty of penalties are given when a striker is goin away from goal and is touched slightly, those are the soft penalties. Also Cook immediately accepts he made a mistake and it’s a penalty.
