I’m American and I wish American sports would incorporate promotion/relegation. It’s a critical element in making sport about pure competition, not just marketing and sales. I would be furious if American owners influenced European football leagues to abandon it.

I'm 75 year old man and I was lucky to watch Newcastle United win the Fairs Cup, I remember our Captain Bobby Moncur drag us to a historical Fairs Cup win, he scored such important goals and as our best defender that was remarkable, and like Alan Shearer I would love to see us win either one of our domestic trophies, the Premiership Title or a European Cup, I don’t care which so long as they do that sooner rather than later 😊

Regarding players struggling after retirement - I'm an average IT guy with a full time job, I love to play amateur football and the highest level I've played was an 5-a-side championship of teams from IT companies in the city I lived. When I reached 40 I got a nasty injury that I thought will end all my sport activities and the very thought that I'll never ever play football really got me down. Thankfully I managed to recover, and at 42 I know the day will come, but I just can't come to terms with the idea that one day I'll have to stop. So I really can't imagine what it would be for someone, whose whole life was football to just stop it. And every retired players (of any level) that are struggling have my deepest sympathy!

I had that injury at 18 to be told to hang up the boots or be in a wheelchair. I had to walk away from the sport for 2 years. No playing, no watching. It was torture and I really lost a huge part of who I was as a person when I was told that news

@@petar.stoyanov I should have added. This was 10 years ago. Had to separate myself from the game for about 2/3 years where I couldn’t watch it, play it, coach it, or even hear it. Yes it was hard but you’re absolutely right, life goes on. I ended up turning it into a positive and eventually went back to the team I played for and helped them coach some players etc. I’d love to play again but the fear is still there but at least I can enjoy the game by watching and coaching others to give them a chance of making it

Love the podcast... and really liked how you shared with us how difficult it is for footballers once they retire. Although it is sad to hear, i think like military guys who become veterans, they often get forgotten about and neglected. And you hope that support networks or coaches could assist with this too. I often hear how footballers get told that they are out also, and it sounds so cold and callous. I often wonder how humane that is to not at least be respectful and human enough to do it properly, staged or step by step instead of brutal, no explanations and no care of anyone but themselves as the clubs or top decision makers. Really enjoy both the deep chats and the light funny banters too. It is actually nicely grounding and relaxing just listening to you guys, in a world that is so unpredictable and hostile these days. Keep it up :)

I had the privilege of playing against Celtic when I was a kid in the early 90's. My teammates and I found it odd that after the game the Celtic players gave all their uniforms back (shorts too). As Americans we didn't understand it until someone said they give the numbers out by position. That changed exactly with the names on the back and marketing of uniforms. Good call. Our question as a team was "One size fits all?" Great show.

From an American perspective, I think American owners understand why the league needs a relegation model. American League sports/cartel model ownership is really contingent on drafts and amateur league infrastructure that just isn’t a reality in Europe. It would also eliminate neutral interest for games outside the top of the league, making the product less valuable and therefore their interests less valuable. Maybe that’s just optimism though.
@hartshaped11 ай бұрын
Don't think that the issue around US ownership will lead to no relegations, if you actually look at what is going on at the moment in the U.S there's actually now a realisation of the value and audience it brings to the sport. There's a lot of talk in the U.S how they can introduce relegation and promotion and I believe the leagues below the MLS (The USL) are putting together the proposal for such.
@bbbeezy11 ай бұрын
There will never be a promotion/relegation system put in place in MLS or American soccer in general. Owners would never agree to it based purely on the cost it takes to buy and run a franchise in MLS and the inherent risks involved. Just ask Bournemouth’s new owner Bill Foley-he bailed on the idea of an MLS team in Vegas because it was too expensive, so he bought a premier league team instead. In the same way European (and global) football could never imagine a system other than promo/relegation, the opposite is true in the US. It’s just not how American sports are run.

Love the pod gents. But I want to pick Alan up on something. Last week he said players needing a rest is a myth or it’s overplayed. “Get on with it” etc But how does he square that with this week saying after a game in his later years he couldn’t get out of bed for the pain or restrictions? Surely rest and rotation would have aided his recovery and not suffer from all of these complications. Pretty sure Wrighty’s ankle is fused together. Surely we need to accept that rest and rotation is needed in the game.

Usually when people refer to trophy droughts, it's in reference to the "major trophies" of First Division/PL, FA Cup, League Cup and anything European (UCL/UEL/UECL). Official honours lists would obviously mention lower division league titles, but they're not considered "major trophies"

If the Premier league has 14+ American owners, and they decide to vote for a closed shop, what could anyone do about it? The only teams that would moan, would be those that weren't in the league at the time of the vote. All those in at the time would feign outrage, but the money it brings them would outweigh any real complaint. The fans no longer matter in this business, because it is a business, and the fans would still pay their money and watch. The TV revenue would be the only caveat to the vote. There would then be a European Super League/competition.
