I think I would have a meltdown going into places like these-- I work in a thrift store in a small US state and it took me nearly 2 years to find a Nintendo DS and a Nintendo DS Lite (purchased for $10 each). Unfortunately, those treasured finds I've lost to a house fire a few weeks back. I hope to go to Japan in the near future, and replenish some of what I've lost. Thanks for the video, Elliot!

Agreed, it also says a lot about what adults think kids will like, which is often very different from what they do. There was a game I read about where they liked the wip European promotional poster that they used it as the cover in both Europe and Japan (sadly we Europeans got the horrible American cover on Switch online)! Sometimes NoE would make a really weird cover despite the Japanese one with an anime style would be right at home in Spain, Italy, and some other countries at the time..!

Those were not different variations for Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. The one on top is Donkey Konga, a rhythm videogame in the likes of Taiko no Tatsujin, and there were actually three of them. Both Donkey Konga and Jungle Beat use the DK Bongos as a controller! Also, that train controller wasn’t made for the Super Famicom. I may be wrong, but I believe they were made for the PS2 (for games like Train Simulator and Densha de GO!). Anyway, great video as always, I’ve been loving these vlogs so far!

I actually found one of those “pikachu mystery boxes” at a local thrift store here in the states. I gave it to the biggest pikachu fan I know :) It’s actually a little piggy bank. You put a coin on the button and press it, Pikachu peeks it’s head out and pulls the coin in. It’s adorable. I paid $6 for it, perfect condition.

If you ever visit Japan, the whole country feels like a dream sequence for any tinkerer/collector/gamer. Just keep in mind if you plan to buy anything, it helps to know what consoles/handhelds are region locked! Some shops will have a handy cheat sheet, but not always. I recently visited and purchased Chrono Trigger - which fortunately has english settings!

I lived in Ikebukuro for about 18 months in the mid 2000s, so seeing these recent vids gives me nostalgia. I used to frequent Akihabara and go down to Nagoya or Osaka fairly often. In fact, I bought the original PSP 1000 on launch day from Bic Camera in Shinjuku. Playing Ridge Rager during lunch at work was fun, and for about precisely 3 days I was the 'king' of the English school for owning a Playstation Portable (until everyone else got their own).

When New Horizons came out and I got back into Animal Crossing, I went to a local game shop and saw the N64 AC game complete in box in mint condition for like $30.! When Fire Emblem Engage came out and I got back into FE, I saw in that exact same store a boxed mint copy of the first FE game on the Famicom for under $20.!

It is worth noting that the products with the green 「ジャンク」lables are 'junk' and have either some faults or don't work at all, which explains a lot of the really low prices. 05:52 Minidisc is such an underrated system. Sound quality is far superior to MP3. I have several MD players I use as well as a MD hifi system. Plus I feel like Neo every time I use my player (which is everyday)! 😂 But you gotta get the models that are AA powered. Can’t stand the gum stick batteries. Yes the AA powered players are slightly bulkier (although my MZ R37 is reasonably slim but a little longer) but far more future proof.

Seeing all these Hard Off stores reminds me of one of their stores in the USA, Book Off. I used to live in San Diego, California, where there was one nearby. I only browsed while waiting to enter the ramen shop next door though. 😅 I didn't see everything they had to offer, but I definitely saw plenty of Japanese games there. The selection of consoles was much smaller though, nowhere near as many as what you've shown in these videos. Too bad there isn't one where I am now though, makes me regret not taking a closer look and possibly purchasing some retro hardware from them. Would have loved to get my hands on a DMG GameBoy, AGB-001 GBA, or a 3000 model PSP there.
