Dollar used to be one of my secret pleasures. I was a nightclub dj in the late 70s and early 80s and really enjoyed playing some dollar tracks. In particular videotech is my favourite.

The work Dollar did with Trevor Horn was ground breaking and paved the way for Frankie Goes To Hollywood and some of his other great work with bands like ABC. The Dollar Album is still a favourite of mine to this day, having spent a lot of time listening to it in the 1980s. Someone lent it to me in 1984 and I only returned it four years later- I did subsequently buy it and the recent box set to make up for not purchasing it originally! It is a shame they were derided in some quarters because the music deserved to be taken more seriously; it was innovative, exciting, and tracks like Hand Held In Black and White and Give Me Back My Heart are amongst the best of the decade. The performance of the latter at the 2004 Prince's Trust concert was a magnificent full circle moment and sounds brilliant on the DVD. Oh L'Amour from 1988 is also superb. It's cool to not be cool, always a club worth being a member of when all is said and done.

I don't know much of this phase of Gary's career but I bet he was great to work with as he seems so humble but man is he ever creative, he has melodies pouring out of him! I've never heard of dollar though!
