Fun fact about Schönbrunn (the last castle in the video) - you can actually rent rooms/apartments inside for regular living! They even cost almost regular rent fees. I grew up in Vienna and know some people who live inside, they say it's pretty comfortable. (It's probably not in the main part of the castle seen inside the video - there's many more buildings and extensions to it on all sides)

The Hearst Castle was by far my favorite attraction to visit while living in California. I cannot recommend it enough. This video doesn't come close to showing how mind boggling immensely opulent and luxurious this once "home" truly is. If you're ever in California, go. Tickets are reasonable and I was kicking myself afterwards that I didn't pay extra for the extended tour.
@DeadBunny694 жыл бұрын
m m I've never been to the Biltmore but I have been to the Palace at Versailles. The above video says that Versailles is better than the Hearst Castle but I completely disagree. Versailles is far greater in scale but it's void of any furniture apart from a few tables and throne. It's basically one giant gilded room after another, pretty much all of them looking alike apart from the uninspiring painting of landscapes and aristocrats hanging on the wall. The Hearst Castle on the other hand is fully furnished with incredible art and artifacts that Hearst collected over decades from around the world. Exquisite furniture, painting, rugs, antiquities, etc. There are entire rooms with walls covered in carved wooden panels taken from age old monastery that generations of monks took centuries to painstakingly complete. Want to visit Ancient Rome? Take a look at the pool which is totally authentic stones and tiles from the time of the actual Roman and Greek Empires. And this videos didn't even show the huge interior pool which also has stonework and tiles from ancient palaces. To put it in perspective, there's one large extremely rare sculpture, marble, of Napoleon sister, one of only two sculpture that survive by this particular artist, that if put up for auction today would bring enough money to rebuild the entire Hearst Castle back in time it was constructed. Add, the history of the people who lived and played there, their lives, is quite interesting. I really enjoyed it and I saw only half of what was to be seen. Thus why I was kicking myself that I didn't pay for the full extended tour.
@henrylivingstone28003 жыл бұрын
@@DeadBunny69 Actually the Roman pool of Hearst castle isn’t made of ancient components, while the Neptune pool is centered by the facade of an ancient Roman temple, the Roman pool is the creation of architect Julian Morgan and was a contemporary construction and consists of modern materials.

The ceiling in the dining hall of Hearst castle is not “Art Deco”. Art Deco is an architectural style popularized during the 1920s-1930s. The ceiling in the dining hall I believe dates to the 14-15th century and is either medieval or gothic.
@steelman863 жыл бұрын
Somewhat correct in that it is called the refectory and not a dining room.very far from art deco architecture for sure. Many of the refectory ceiling panels were carved right there on the hill, complete with minute worm holes for authenticity. Whole buildings were bought by Hearst mainly throughout Europe, taken apart and shipped into San Luis Obispo by rail or by ship into the San Simeon port where a Hearst pier was built for incoming shipments and building supplies as well as guests who didn’t fly into Hearst’s private air strip. Its a marvelous place to visit!
@henrylivingstone28003 жыл бұрын
@@steelman86 Regardless of what the room in question is called it is nonetheless a dining hall, a refectory is a “dining room used especially in religious or institutional buildings. And despite Julia Morgan’s christening the room as a refectory in reference to the atmosphere and architectural details from former refectories considering that Hearst castle is not a monastery or place of worship, it is indeed a dining hall and nothing more. The ceiling upon further research is actually Italian 16th century and not of a contemporary manufacture. It was bought by Mr Hearst in Rome in may of 1924, and while the spacing and slats between the carvings were made to fit the panels the carvings themselves are period pieces.
