OK. Here's Swift reefer training 102: Swift reefers are better than Central. They are usually newer. Thermoking reefers are better than Carrier. They are quieter (so you can sleep), have fewer breakdowns, and service is easier to get on the road. Wide Single tires are better than duals. They get better mileage for O/O's (company drivers don't worry about it). Meritor tire pressure monitoring is worth having if you can find a trailer with it. There are some Swift reefers that have it. Air release for the tandem lock pins is better than a manual handle unless it's a Central Utility brand trailer. You have to knock the valve with a hammer on those - better to just have a handle. The big plastic side skirts are better than no skirts for fuel mileage. (company drivers don't worry about it). Some reefers have 120 gallon tanks and can add almost 1000 pounds of weight when fully fueled. It annoys me when I pick up one of those and the tank is full. You should never fill the 120 gallon tanks over half full unless the trailer is going by rail. some comments on your pre-trip: Make sure every Swift or Central trailer you pick up has its registration with it. This is always the first thing you look for when you pre-trip any Swift owned trailer. Often it's missing and it's a ticket if you get stopped and don't have it. Call dispatch and have them fax you one if it isn't there, then leave it with the trailer when you drop it. The Swift trailers have their registration in a round plastic box on the front of the trailer (usually). The Centrals have a metal plate for a registration card (usually). Check the date on the inspection decal and make sure it's current. Make sure when you check your lights that you step back and look at the marker lights on the top front corners of the trailer. That's a hard one to spot when you're standing right by the trailer, but you can't miss it on a trailer going down the road. Always check for hazmat placards. Customers will sometimes unload a trailer and not bother to peel off the placards. The number one most frequent hazmat related citation Swift drivers get if for unnecessary placards. And it's usually non-hazmat drivers who get them because they aren't used to noticing placards. And some general maintenance advice: Keep a large pair of vise grips and a hammer in case you get a trailer with a broken tandem lock pin. Never hit a pin with a hammer unless it is already broken. If it is you can get the tandems to slide by catching the pin in a bind, then knocking it in with the hammer, then clamping it in with the vise grips. Have a spare for every light on the trailer - except the top ones you can't reach. If you get an ABS warning light for the trailer it is almost always an air leak at the glad hands. Always have spare glad hand seals. When you get an ABS light change all four seals.

+George Alvarez Jr I don't know. Things have changed in the last year since I left. I was on a dedicated account and we switched from dry to reefer because our customer had both types of freight. If you don't think the dispatcher for your dedicated account can answer it then call the fleet manager for your home terminal. It shouldn't be a big deal. Swift jumped into refrigerated freight in a big way after they acquired Central.

nospam3001 reefer is not much different than dry van. Just keep an eye on the light and check your temps periodically. The annoying part is the constant humming of the motor when your trying to sleep. He forgot to mention Walmart dedicated trailers

I just subed to your chanel. That was very interesting. I didn't know Swift ran reefer. Only Central Refrigerated, but I hear Swift closed them. How is working for Swift different not that Knight owns them?

What about 5th wheel settings. My 5th wheel is almost near the front. Would I need to slide it back before hookinh up to a reefer? And are turns different than a dry van

need to pre trips on them old trailers if it's not loaded cause engine might kick on and run but you have pressure loss or it won't defrost.
