That’s a lot of work Jeff! I did that the other day on my flower bed with sweet potatoes and used all the leaves for compost 👍🥰👩🌾 I’m planting kale if I’m not too late and we’ll see the cauliflower also, it’s still cold here and rainy. I’m goin to add my compost if it’s ready. Got lots of weeding and mulching and planting to do 😪😮💨😂 thanks Jeff 👍👩🌾🥰

What are your winters like? I’m in Chicago so we get bad around late January. I have some cauliflower in the ground now for the first time and they are about the same size as yours. I have the straw ready but wanted to add some nutrients first and a layer of compost (I don’t have grass clippings but I have leaves). Wasn’t sure if I was on the right track or not. Glad to see your video.

Awesome Ritzi...we're quite mild here as we are right on the ocean. About the same climate as Seattle. So for fall Brassicas, I have a little leeway with planting. If we were inland a bit, I would most likely have planted a month earlier. Cheers!

Is that Bermuda grass in that bed? The timing and content - perfect. Just headed out to deal with the broccoli and cauliflower transplants I just got. And, to deal with a grass (Bermuda) infiltrated bed. Only difference, is my bed is in ground. (I may put some plants in pots.)
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question Melissa! Its an annoying grass with crazy long roots and a little bit of resistance to smothering. Not an ideal combination. In-ground can be tough...grass climbs in from the sides..definitely trickier. Best of luck, keep us posted on your progress!

Is there a reason you use brown craft paper instead of newspaper?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Hey Debbie, not really no. Modern inks are soy-based, but I got fed up with a million little pieces of newspaper flying everywhere.....this brown paper comes in huge rolls, is 100% recycled and biodegradable....so much easier to work with!

Definitely. In situations where the weeds are very vigorous or in starting a new bed in top of grass, I'm always opt for cardboard!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I was planning on interplanting carrots and/ or beets. Will they do okay? Or put them elsewhere? Edit: typo beets, not beers!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
@@melissajarvis4829 For carrots and beets, it can be tricky with cardboard as their roots sometimes have trouble penetrating the thicker material. I try not to use cardboard for seeding....you often end up with an elevated, super shallow planting....not good. Just be aware of that. Cheers.
@melissajarvis48294 жыл бұрын
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thank you! That's exactly what I was worried about! If the bags might be okay, I'll use them in the main areas for seeds, in front of the brassicas and just not inter-plant between them. PS. This is actually an old rose bed, next to the driveway and mailbox, and along the street about six feet. So, it has to look nice. I can't put bare cardboard out there. But, I just can't seem to dig all the Bermuda grass out, as the roots grow deep. And then, I also don't want to hurt the remaining roses, so that also hampers me.

@@melissajarvis4829 Paper bags cut into flat strips or even just flattened would work great!
@melissajarvis48294 жыл бұрын
Another question: How often can you replant the same type of plants in an area? (Brasicas- I have transplants of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and brussel sprouts.) I planted some cauliflower and kolrabi in an area last spring (failed - got too hot, too soon) that I would like to use again, this fall. Should I risk it? I could just plant greens and flowers there, if needed. But, it gets better sunlight. My other areas are partly shaded.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Hey Melissa, I do think after several years you'd want to rotate out most Brassicas.....but 2-3 years in a row shouldn't be too bad. Remember, crop rotation is often necessary due to modern agriculture practices..with a healthy soil and absence of chemical inputs, a lot of the crop rotation issues are mitigated. Twice in a row won't be a problem...just get something else in there come the spring, like peas or beans.

Hi. Nice video n harvest, except for the lawnmower sound. Sometimes people overtalk things. Thanks for using an electric mower. Did you use butchers paper?
