One additional thing u can do if u have time to preserve the wood is use Japanese technique of shou Sugi ban (burn/char the wood then file/sand)...cool looking and adds some rot resistance

The end result of your raised bed was very nice looking. As you know every circumstance is a little different. That's why it's fantastic if you can make your own beds. I live in Aurora, Oregon, zone 8b and my son built 3 raised beds for a surprise mothers day. So thankful. If I could make a bed I would put the galvanized mesh on the bottom of the bed before filling with soil and I would calculate out a specific size top for every bed to be the same so I could make season extenders to go on top. Along with bug netting toppers. I'll always be grateful for the gift but I also struggle with moles tilling my beds every single day. They push all new plantings back out of the ground and it'd be far less frustrating to have that mesh at the bottom keeping those little buggers out of my beds.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I'm in UK & the price of construction materials have also increased . Maybe it's the start of inflation . Therefore it's more relevant than ever to grow your own food . Good video , Thanks .

I like the dark stripe around the bed. It makes the finished product look expensive; something Thurston Howell III would appreciate enough that he would allow his gardener to actually use it for gardening.

Jeff just noticed a typo in your presentation. Anytime you are sanding dimensional lumber, always sand it first. No big deal I got a little chuckle out of it. Love those garden beds!!!

nice design, looks sharp. I assume that's pine? I wonder how durable/lasting thinner cedar would be in relation to fullsize pine. Also, do you ever put plastic or fabric liners on the sides of your bed?

Can I use top soil as garden soil by adding stuff to it. (Amending it) if so what stuff would I put in to make it work for what I want?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Julie, I've had success with top soil for sure. Especially as fill to get the garden beds first filled up, which can take a LOT of soil. After that, you can start to amend with slow release nutrients like these guys: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ_Kq4Z-qcikaKM

Do you have any ideas for building a garden bed for a slope or to terrace?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly... I've done it multiple times.... It's 100x easier to grade the land and terrace it level into steps than it is to construct weirdly shaped garden beds.

@@SamiahBLAKE the big plank ones are Douglas Fir, the smaller vertical plank ones in other videos are Western Red-Cedar.

It’s nice to have a raised beds but to costly. I’m thinking of no dig garden to eliminate expenses and generate more income for my brother and his family. I’m trying to help him as it’s hard in Manila now, his not working and the stimulus is not given to the needy.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

You can definitely start no-dig without a garden bed, straight into the ground! Lay down the cardboard anytime to get it going!
@emylytle5409

Alright, thanks for the advice does it matter how thick the cardboard is? Thanks again 👍🙏🏻😇🥰
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
@@emylytle5409 all depends on your weeds Emy.... It's all about suppressing the weeds/grass abd creating a base.... If you don't have much weeds or grass, thin in fine. If you have lots, then thicker cardboard is necessary. :-)
