Plant Your Cucumbers In Your Spring Garden. Cucumbers are one of the most popular garden crops of all time. They are easy to grow, but sometimes do not transplant well, so you really have to get them going and well established ahead of spring.
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, your growing season is finite, and often too short to properly ripen Cucumbers that are directly seeded into the garden. Starter plants are expensive, so you need a plan! The plan is simple, start your own Cucumber seeds indoors, move them along to bigger pots, and then, when the weather permits, harden off those plants and get them into the spring garden to grow for summer harvest!
In this video, I show you how to take the awesome Cucumber starter plants that you created in Parts 1 and 2 of this series and how we plant them right into our spring garden! Get those Cucumbers planted up right and they will produce an astonishing amount of fruit this summer!

Great videos! I’m getting ready to start my cucumber seeds. Someone suggest I soak the seeds in a cup of warm water overnight before I plant them. I grow my veggies in two large flower pots on my patio. One year I grew tons of cucumbers, but last year they failed. We had a terribly hot summer and I guess the sun was too hot on them. They only got morning sun then in shade in the afternoons. Thanks or the excellent tips! Love your videos!

I valued your cucumber series and want to highly thank you for especially giving time periods and what to look for before you transplant and what size pot to use for your first transplant. I am a beginner with a yellow thumb I need to stay cautious while planting because I killed every vegetable I began to grow. Now, I’m not giving up and starting over. My cucumbers are thriving and they are not leggy as my first time starting. So, thank you kindly for your patience in your video, explaining as if you are teaching a beginner. I am in debt to you. @TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rachel!! You can fertilize (if your soil needs it) when your plants get their 2nd set of true leaves. Initially, the plants have all the food they need from the actual seed itself, and fertilizer can burn and harm the first roots that come out. A dilute organic seaweed or kelp mix is just fine, then again when flowers start to appear. Best of luck!!!

I love this 3 part tutorial. It is super simple and compact. Last year I got cucumber worms. How do I avoid those pests?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching Bethany! For Cuke worms, there's actually two: Pickleworms and Melonworms. Melonworms actually prefer the leaves, Pickleworms start at the flowers and then keep going for the fruit from the inside out. Preventative seems to be the best defense. Plant early for early harvest works because these pests need heat. If you live in a warm climate, make sure to fully destroy and remove last year's crops. Hand pick the worm nests early. Google images of them and learn to spot them! Best of luck!

Hi Jeff I just have a few questions for u. Do you do your growing on southern Vancouver Island? What are your usual night temperature from June to September? I live in Red Deer AB. My nighttime temperatures here seldom get over 50 F or 10 C. So my tomatoe and peppers I grow in greenhouses. My cucumbers have been grown in the ground from transplants. Historically they have done pretty well. Not this year. I am going to dig them up and move them to a greenhouse. I have some new tomatoe varieties that I am not overly impressed with that I am moving outside. Do u think that will work?

hi! i’ve just started growing cucumbers. I have no clue what i’m doing, and i’m pretty sure i did something wrong with either planting too many seeds together, or planting it in too big of a pot pre-transplant. I just transplanted them into my box garden yesterday and they are looking worse than before i moved them. Any tips???
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mallory, could definitely be transplant shock. Moving Cukes can definitely set them back....temperature, moisture differences, even pH. All things that mess with them growing normally. Keep them spaces about a foot apart and don't do any fertlizing at this point....wait until the roots take hold. Be careful not to over-water and don't stress about losing foliage here or there....the plants will shed leaves to protect itself.

I have a problem. When it was time to move my cucumber for the first time, all looked well but then they started shrinking and kinda hugging themselves (Wilting) . I got scared. Later at night or in the early morning there leaves would start flowing back with life again (mostly). My main theory is because of too much sunlight or Heat. You see, The first day I switched them it was start to get very hot from 75 one day then to 88 then end of the week. Yet I have other plants that i Haven't moved yet and they seem to be doing just fine in the Heaty condition. What is your take on this? How can I make them stop wilting?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tito, yeah, cukes are sensitive little plants sometimes. Transplanting really affects them with the change in soil chemistry. Plus, new air and temperature and light intensity (ie hardening off) really needs to be done gradually with them, over the coarse of 2-3 weeks minimum.
@tammyohlsson7966
@tammyohlsson7966 3 жыл бұрын
You may have addressed this but I’m not sure why you don’t just start with a four inch pot? Please help.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Hey tammy, a few reasons. First, space is a premium. 18 of the 4 inch pots take the space of 98 plugs. Second is conservation of soil. For every 4 inch pot that fails to either germinate or produce a viable plant that you want to keep growing, that is a LOT of soil wasted. Plugs are completely dispensable because you have hundreds of them. So if one doesn't work out, no big deal, there's 97 other ones in the tray. When you start to do lots and lots of seedlings, your biggest resources become space, time, and soil. Its no reason professional growing nurseries use plugs trays and the constant incremental potting of the plants into bigger sizes. :-) The final reason for me is that I can pick the best of the best. Seeds are cheap...I can germinate hundreds of them and literally pick the best 15 or 20 specimens. If I use larger pots, I'm stuck growing what I planted, nothing more. Hope that helps, cheers!

Doesn't green grass clippings burn the plants as mulch??
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Darlene, great question, and yes, there's definitely a danger. But it happens when the grass is laid on too thick, clumps, and then rots. Then it just heats up like crazy and that's when it can burn (temperature) as well as nutrient burn (nitrogen). Solution is to keep it loose....or cut it with straw or shredded leaves. Give it some structure to allow air flow. :-)

Can you grow pickling dukes in containers?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Colleen, most definitely!! If you can get the staking right, you can even grow the big slicers in containers. Cukes don't have massive root systems....decent, but nothing like a tomato or pepper. If you can support the vines properly, they can grow in an astonishingly small amount of soil!

I noticed you didn’t shake the root part of the cucumber and just planted straight in the ground with the original square shape. When or why should you or shouldn’t you flake the roots ?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely do that when the pots are extremely root-bound. That is, the roots need help to come apart so they can spread. With a fresh pot like this, it'll have no problem doing that on its own.

What's your opinion on the real reason cucumbers turn bitter? I had seven varieties all in the same bed same treatment and water condition. Almost every one was bitter but produced very well otherwise

Why not just start them in the larger pots?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Space. And time.....or more importantly, time wasted. When starting hundreds (thousands actually) of seedlings, having the ability to start them all in 4" or 1 gallon pots is nearly impossible, even for professional operations. And even if you could, you wouldn't. Seeds are CHEAP. Space, time, labor, and inputs are not. Not every seed germinates and not every seed that does germinate is a candidate for either sale as a starter plant or for planting in my (your) garden. When we germinate a 98-cell tray, maybe 90-92 seedlings make it. Out of those 90 seedlings, maybe 80 are viable enough to move on to 4" pots. Out of those 80, usually all are good to go, but not always. And in additional to all that, you can now stagger planting, growing, and selling. If a farm needs cucumber start plants for sale from March all the way to May, they need a steady supply. Its not good business to produce 200 right away, then sell out or sell what the market will bear for that week....then have none. Similarly, not all my beds are ready for planting at the same time. By holding back seedling trays, I can plant my greenhouse in February....but then I can also plant an outside bed in May. That's a 3-month swing. Nice to have plants staggered at different stages, due to being held back.

The Ripe Tomato Farms Hey 👋 I have a question about mulching . Today I raked up some leaves from a bush in my yard, the leaves were yellowish greenish still, not like the ones in fall. I raked them and used them as mulch in a couple places in my garden. Is that ok to do? My husband says it’s not because I’ll create mold and fungus. What do you suggest?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 4 жыл бұрын
@@FarmLifewithKids Hey, thanks for asking. Usually, this time of year, mold and fungus isn't an issue. Heat, drier weather, and generally less conditions that mold likes is ahead of is. If you cam. mix it with some straw or dry shredded leaves and you'll be ok. Fungus (mycelia) are not the enemy of plants...in fact, quite the opposite. Create a biome in that top layer of soil WITH that mulch, and you'll be surprised at the results!
